1023.0. "Koss Cordless Headphones (Infared)" by MTBLUE::BOTTOM_DAVID (Not so famous rock star) Mon Nov 23 1987 15:48

I see that surface merchandise now sells a Koss Irfared cordless
headphone system...of course they don't have one you can try..at
least up here they don't have any at all...

After tripping on my headphone extension for 10*12 times I decided
this was an idea worth considering....

anybody know how well these work?

...don't know how well they work, but wouldn't remote controls
    drive 'em bonkers???

Yup, they work, sorta. I had a set for less than a week, too much
noise in them. It sounds like hiss, supposedly they're just too
    sensitive to "ambient infra-red".

I had fun trying them out at the store though, the transmitter
was mounted on top of the rack full of tuners, amps and CD players that
the guy used for demos, after a half a minute of listening I waved my
hand in front of the transmitter to see how much signal would get
blocked. Everything seemed to lose power, he made some excuses
about power surges, set it all up again and left me to it. After
another 20 secs or so of the demo disk I did the same thing.
Everything in the rack had infra-red remote control and bouncing
the signal back at the rack just sent things crazy. I don't have
much remote stuff at home, so I said I'd try them for a week in the
hopes that my house has lower background noise, it didn't work out
    though.

1023.3Infrared and Visible Light Don't MixAQUA::ROSTYou've been living on solid airTue Nov 24 1987 01:0410

Two jobs ago I worked on design of an infrared voice intercom system,
that uses similar principles to the Koss system. Sennheiser, by
the way has had such a system for a few years.

The bottom line is that almost *any* visible light represents noise
to an IR receiver. In fact, standing in front of a window on a
sunny day may be enough to totally wash out your signal.
