984.0. "Korg DP80 Consumer-oriented Digital Piano" by CTHULU::YERAZUNIS (depleted uranium speaker cabinets?) Mon Oct 19 1987 13:19

    A friend's sister just bought a KORG DP80. I haven't seen the
beast, and I don't know anything about it.

    Three questions:

    	1) Is this a synth or a Digital Piano ("D P")?

    	2) Does it have any socially redeeming value ?

    	3) If it *is* programmable, does anyone out there have any
patches they'd be willing to share?

	From the Korg flyer:

Start the pleasure of making music early with the compact, inexpensive
and "fully-loaded" Korg DP-80 digital piano. Sound better faster with the
DP-80's bright and punchy 16 voices that give you the very best piano, organ,
string, brass, flute, clavinet, guitar sounds and more. Touch the 76 key
velocity-sensitive keyboard and get the feel a real piano. Use the DP-80's
special Key Transpose function to learn faster and play with any instrument.
Full 16 channel MIDI capability lets your DP-80 grow along with your musical
needs. Headphone jacks and twin stereo speakers let you practice on your own
or perform for your friends. Rely on the Korg DP-80's sturdy and lightweight
construction for an instrument that will grow with your music for years to
come.

In my opinion, this instrument may be well and good for a home
application where a child is learning piano, keyboard or wants to play.
The 'digital piano' name may serve to make it appear like it is a better
instrument than it really is. I have played a few while wandering around
in some music stores and feel that they are in the class of Korg's earlier
piano units - not a very good representation of the instruments they are
trying to synthesize.

Interestingly enough, though, reading through the rest of the flyer
(there are other versions of this model - this one's the bottom of the line)
these instruments use FM synthesis (like the Yamaha DX lines, and more recently
the DS-8). I've heard better FM digital pianos, though.

What are the "other models" you mention? And do you have any opinions
    and/or pricing?
