961.0. "Ultimate Noise Gate!" by FLOWER::JASNIEWSKI () Fri Sep 25 1987 17:52

I'll give this one away: Imagine a noise reduction signal processor
that looks just like a "Graphic" equalizer. Instead of each frequency
band's control being a "level", it is a "threshold", say, from 10mV
to 10 volts. Two LEDs for each band, red and green, let you know
if the signal in that band is below the threshold setting or above...

When a particular frequency band's signal is below the threshold
setting, that band is disconnected from the output. When the green
LED is illuminated...you guessed it! That band is "on line".

With a proper choice of thresholds (external) and the dynamic
response of the squelching circuitry (internal), this could be a
killer noise gate! Why record all that "sssssss" when the bassist
is doing a tasty, unaccompanied solo?

Next week's idea: Graphic compressor - or - DBX "N"bx.

This sort of thing is what most single-ended noise reduction systems
like Burwen, Rocktron, DNR, etc. etc. do, except they cannot take
out a mid band noise if higher frequency information is present.

It's called a de-esser. Compression restricted to a frequency band.
Used mostly to take sibilants out of vocalists, but could be used
    for any frequency-specific overload problem.

Hmmmm, how bout a graphic digital delay? Delay the spectral
components of a sound by different times. Should "fatten" things
    up a bit (ar-ar).

Any n-pole filter does this. The good old phase shift as a function of
frequency...

Most compressors have a "side chain" input/output that allows you
to EQ the control signal to do freqency dependent processing.
