879.0. "Second Annual MIDIjam !!!" by JUNIOR::DREHER (This time it's personal...) Tue Jul 21 1987 06:27

It's about that time of year. Seeing how Paul Kent is coming over
from England for a week or so, this is as good as an excuse as any.

It's time for the Second Annual (drum machine roll through a midiverb...)

To be held Sunday, August 2. It is open to all participents of
this conference. You don't even have to own a piece of MIDI gear,
(fairly rare these days). Anyway, this years event will again be held
at my house and studio in Framingham, MA. Exotic MIDI gear is welcome,
like samplers, sequencers, D-50s, etc. Also, free high quality mixdowns
for sequenced data. The house sequencer is a MC-500, though other
sequencers can be patched in through the MIDI patcher. There are
also several synths and processing gear available. The mixer is
24 channels. MIDI Linndrum also available.

On top of all this we have a gas grill for barbequing and a small
swimming pool for those who wish to cool off.

The MIDIwife system exclusive dump of MIDIkid II is slated for
September so she should be able to hold out.

    Who's coming?

Well, I'll be there. I'll bring the Simmons pads and Len's MIDI Drumslave
unit to ship out note-ons, unless Len wants to bring his Octapad. I'll
also bring the TR505 in case the Linn is tied up with sequencer data.
Maybe I should bring the MIDIVERB too?

How are we gonna handle the food? BYOB and BYOSteak? Sounds good to me...

Todd.

Wow!! Sounds great! I wasn't at midijam 1, as I only started at
DEC last year, but am looking forward to this one -- if I'm not
playing that day (people still get married on Sundays in August!)

Details: Is this an impromptu jam (sequence-as-we-go), or do people
bring full sequenced songs and play along with them; or is this
a Mid-summer NAMM show for everyone to show off their midi gear?

Sounds good, whatever it is -- I'll probably bring the D-50, maybe a
couple disks of MC500 sequenced data, too.

I'll bring the Octapad, it works better than the DrumSlave but can
only handle 6 outboard pads (bass, snare, 4 toms?). I'll also
bring some real cymbals and stands?

How are you fixed for burgers, dogs, buns, chips, beers, etc?

879.12Midijam Update...JUNIOR::DREHERThis time it's personal...Fri Jul 24 1987 17:1360
Looks like we have some attendees and Equipment volunteers.

Here's what I think we got so far:

Todd Rhodes - Simmons pads (velocity), TR505, Todd Pads
Len Fehskens	- OctoPads, drum hardware (stands and cymbals)
	Ron Barth	- D-50, MC-500 disks
Stephen Baily	- there is no PC here, just bring yourself
	Richard Wells	- TX81Z
Ed Cote - Mirage, Bass (with NEW strings?)
Dan Arvidson	- Another D-50? Naaaaawwwww
Paul Kent	- Himself, in person

Someone volunteered a DX7 with E! somewhere, but I forget.

We need a keyboard stand or two, and also lots of midi
and audio cords. Another Midipatcher would help, too.

We'll talk about food and refreshments in another reply.

Is this list correct? Anymore attendees in the wings?

Todd, can you also bring your proto-type pads for a demo?
	Maybe you can take orders!

879.13Aw, c'mon, I have SOME equipment.MAY20::BAILEYSteph BaileyFri Jul 24 1987 18:007
    I'm the E! man. I'll bring my three tier Rok-Steady, with it's
vaunted portability, if necessary. (Any need for an MKS-50? That's
the only other really interesting thing that I have. I always say,
no such thing as a too-fat stack of strings...)

I'll be helping someone move during the afternoon, but should be
able to show up later.

Don't think strings will help Edd's bass, so I guess I'll have to show up. Guess
I better shed before next week (slow summer). We can compare the 'classic'
Gibson with a real bass guitar as a side show (note: :^), Edd). I could bring
the ESQ, if you'd like...although I'm sure it will be outclassed.
879.15More ivories or plasticies?AITG::WELLSLeft of CenterFri Jul 24 1987 22:478
Do we want to have more keyboard controllers? I don't know how
this is supposed to operate. Will we all just play in one joyous
cacophony, or everybody gets to try the setup sequentially? I can
bring my pf80 if we want a weighted action controller. No aftertouch
and limited MIDI, though, so someone's KX88 would be preferable.

879.16Count me in...AITG::ARNOLDCurrently at Brown UniversityTue Jul 28 1987 18:2230
My wife and I are hoping to attend this year's MIDIJAM.

As far as equipment goes, I have the following that I could bring:

    	MIDI:
    		- Yamaha PF-15 w/MIDI retrofit (88-keys weighted action)
    		- Roland TR707

    	non-MIDI:
    		- Mini-KORG mono analog synth
    		- KORG PolySix
    		- Mesa/Boogie Mark III amp (simul-class) w/ 12" EV
    		- 15" (Bass) extension speaker cabinet
		- Schecter Strat-type 6-string
    		- Rickenbacker 4001 bass

    	non-musical:

    		- food
    		- beverage

I don't have a car big enough for all of the above. Please let
me know what people would like to fiddle with and I'll bring the
    "most popular" items.

    Hope to see you Sunday,

879.17The weekend has arrived...FSBIC2::DDREHERE/P in trainingFri Jul 31 1987 18:3029
Well, the MIDIjam is on for this coming Sunday. And looks like
we'll have a good turnout and good weather. Steph Bailey, please
bring your DX7. If anybody else has some neat midi toys to bring that
haven't been discussed, bring 'em. Sequencers with prepared data
for all to listen to are also welcome. There will be enough synths
and drum machines to drive. Remember to bring enough cords and
power strips for those bring stuff. Clearly mark what's yours,
so there is no confusion on tear down.

    Some rules around jammin':

There will be lots of time to jam but not all the time. If
people are interest in seeing how the technology works or on trying
something out, there should be time. Also, if jamming turns into
a complete cacophony, I will not hessitate in powering down volume,
since I'm hosting this event. And no hogging jammin' time.

    Food and booze:

It's strickliy BYOB. Remember it's Sunday so stock up ahead
of time. There is also a gas grill so if you want to, bring burgers,
franks, steaks, etc. If some would like to bring salads to share
etc., please feel free. We will provide ketchup, pickles, mustard,
potato chips, paper plates, and other condiments.

There is a small pool and a lake down the street, so bring shorts
and bathing suits if its a hot day.

Dunno if anyone will be reading this before the event, but I won't
be able to make it. I hope a fine time is had by all, and that

879.20Thanks, everyone...BIZET::ARNOLDCurrently at Brown UniversityMon Aug 03 1987 21:3423
Many thanks to the entire Dreher family for hosting MidiJam II. Gail
and I really enjoyed ourselves and I got a lot of ideas for my home
studio once I have enough time to plug everything back in. Thanks
also to everyone who brought along themselves or the instruments.
    The selection was phenomenal.

    For me the highlights were:

    - Seeing Todd's home-made drum pad in action. I don't know a lot about
these things but the prototype unit held its own all afternoon with the
rest of the Simmons pads. If I could get a bunch of these and a
pad-to-MIDI box for a reasonable amount of money, I'd junk my acoustic
drum kit and just play drums through my TR-707 fom the pads.

    - Fiddling with Steph Bailey's E!'d DX7 and MKS-50. I learned a
lot about each instrument from the few moments of explanation I
got from Steph and from playing them. This really brought the need
one could have for an aftertouch-sensitive keyboard. I'd never
played one before but learned quickly that with the right patches,
the pressure sensitivity can make one's playing more dynamic.

    - The Dreher's studio itself. The ideas I got from talking to Dave
and seeing his studio in action were plentiful.

Well not that the lag has jetted I ought to get round to thanking
all thos who hosted me during my little trippette around the various
    facilities of Commusic.

Firstly thanks to Monsieur Dreher for hosting the Midijam and also
thanks to him for the guided tour of his recording facility. The
Midijam was fun and Dave's studio gave me lots of Ideas for improving
    things at home.

Also thanks to to LEDS-BIM for paying for my drinks for a whole
evening. I didn't get to meet Miss Mitsubishi but then in the state
I was in when I left it wouldn't have mattered. My guide say's thay
my "wrong side of the road" driving improves after a Bloody Mary
    or two.

Tel me again. Who was it who shot the Sheriff.
