689.0. "Yamaha RX5 Drum Machine" by COROT::CERTO () Mon Feb 09 1987 18:40

I heard the new Yamaha RX-5 drum machine Saturday and all I can
say is "Wow." I had about 5 minutes of playing with it before
closing time, after I discovered where they were hiding it, but
    here's my first impressions.

The sounds are the thing; they have some great samples built in,
and it comes with a cartridge with more sounds on it! Besides
the usual drum kit and alternates there is some amazing samples.
It has Bass plucked or picked, a very full Synth sound a'la the
dx, some distinct Vocal sounds: a funky male "HHOOH" and "WAO!"

The Demo is amazing, you've got to hear it! Additional instruments
are optional, this does it all. So much for drum machines replacing
drummers, what about bass players, keyboard players, who knows
whats next. A guy in the room, after being told that the whole
song came out of the RX-5, said disbelievingly: "unh-uh, its not
    fair!"

Midi in,out, thru, supports midi velocity, ~8 ouputs, ~16 assignable
pads (non-velocity), single cartridge slot, 8 sliders for
instrument volume, one slider each for tempo, data, & overall
volume, no sampling capability (at least for now: rumors though).

How much? And how does it compare to a Roland xx505 rythem machine?

I am curious, although I have spent enough money for a long while.

Selling price: $1195 or possibly $1100.

There's little comparison with the tr505, this has more voices,
is bigger, is expandable via cartridges, has individual outputs
and level controls, and probably a lot of other great things!

Now if we could pick it up for the tr505's price... :-) !

I seem to be having a specific problem with my Yamaha RX5
drum machine that I hope someone out there can help me with.

For each pad on the RX5, you can assign a voice from one of
three voice memories...Internal, Cartridge, or RAM (which is
    	on board the RX5).

When I copy a voice into the RAM, I can edit the voice and save
it just as I would with its Internal memory, however, if I switch
to a different Waveform Data Cartridge, the copied voice (in the
RAM)becomes radically distorted. Apparently, this on board RAM
relies on the data cartridge some-how, however refering to the
manual, I can find nothing to verify this. It would seem to me
that switching cartridges should not interfere with the internal
    	RAM.

Can anyone help? I'd sure appreciate it!!
