569.0. "Problem with Casio CZ101 EZ-CZ Cartridge" by AKOV68::EATON (SET PROFILE/PERSONAL_NAME="string") Fri Nov 14 1986 13:54

	Last night I took out my CZ101 and plugged the cartridge with the
four switchable tracks of 16 memory locations (EZ-CZ). Whe what to my
wondering.... I was getting all manner of confusion:

	The cartridge patches would change on me when switching back and forth,

	The patch in one would be present in the next adjacent slot,

	Going back after shutting down, the patch that was overridden by the
		adjacent patch now overrode the previous patch...

	What was going on? Was it simply a need for new batteries? Does my CZ
cartridge port have a problem? Is it the cartridge itself?

	Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Has this worked before? Or was this the first time you tried the
    cartridge? If it worked before, I'd suspect batteries - note that
    there is also a battery (one of those wonderful lithium jobs, I'll
    bet) inside the cartridge. These are supposed to last 5 years,
    but that's five years from date of manufacture, and as they get
    tired all kinds of wierd, probably low voltage inspired, behaviour
    manifests itself. I stopped using lithiums in my cameras for this
    reason; the mercuries may have shorter shelf life, but when they
    die they die, period, and you know you need a new one; none of this
    "I don't feel well" for an extended period of time.

    Alternatively the switching logic in the cartridge has gone bonkers,
    but I'll bet an undervoltage battery could explain that too.

RE < Note 569.1 by DRUMS::FEHSKENS >

	The cartridge has worked before. I should have been more specific.
When I asked if the batteries needed replacing, I meant in the cartridge.
The presets and the internal memories were working fine.

	It sounds like step one is to stop and get the AAA bateries for the
cartridge.

	Just to let all you that have been sitting on the edge of your seats
know...

	I exchanged batteries in the cartridge and still had a problem. I
stopped at a local music shop that had a cz and found the strangeness recurred
in another keyboard. So I called the dealer I bought the cartridge from. They
seemed to know right away it was the cartridge, called the distributor, and will
replace.

	Is this type of cartridge defect common?
