369.0. ""Studio 99"" by ADVAX::SPEED (Derek Speed, WS Tech Mktg) Fri May 23 1986 14:17

In a previous note, someone mentioned that it would be nice to start
a note discussing what equipment they have in their studios. I
would like to start with the personal use studio being built by
my band. The name of the studio is "Studio 99". Much of the equipment
is personal property of the members of the band, with our guitar
player contributing most the recording gear (especially the Studio
    8).

    		Recording gear

Tascam Model 388 ("Studio 8") - 8 channel mixer and 8 tracks on
    				     1/4" tape

Kelsey 12X3 mixer - 12 channel stereo board - used as a submixer
    			for drums, keys, etc.

Revox 4 track tape machine - old machine, used for tape echo only.

Sony (I think, haven't seen it yet) cassette deck - has dubbing
capability for high speed cassette dubbing. I'm not too keen on
using a cassette deck for producing master tapes but it's not my
    money :-)

    		Effects/outboard processing

DOD stereo flanger - analog unit which can produce some nice stereo
flanging if you set it up properly.

    Ibanez digital delay/harmonizer

    Yamaha SPX-90 digital effects processor

    		Monitor system

    JBL L100 Century studio monitors
    ASR stereo amplifier

    		Keyboards and MIDI gear

    Roland JUNO-106 synthesizer (MIDI)
    Roland SH1000 synthesizer
    Casio 202 digital synthesizer
    Rhodes 73 key stage piano
    Siel polyphonic synthesizer (MIDI)
    Roland MSQ-100 MIDI sequencer
    2 Roland TR-707 drum machines
Radio Shack Color computer with custom MIDI sequencing SW
IBM PC compatible with MIDI sequencing SW (soon)

    		Other musical instruments

    Custom drum kit

369.1Title should be "What's in Your Studio?"ADVAX::SPEEDDerek Speed, WS Tech MktgFri May 23 1986 14:205
Sorry about the title of the note. I meant to type "What's in Your
Studio" as the base note and .0 was supposed to be a reply to the
    base note. Screwed up again....

369.2Dreher's studio...JUNIOR::DREHERFri May 23 1986 21:4188
My studio is still has yet to have a name. The equipment in it has
taken 4 years to accumulate. Much of this equipment can be heard on
the_soon_to_be_released Commusic I compilation tape. Some of this stuff
came from my gigging days. The studio started out with a Tascam 244
4-trk but was upgraded to 8-trk Oct 85.

Console:

Tascam 312 12x4x2 mixing board (12 channel, 4 buss, 3 band parametric EQ,
8-trk monitoring, 3 aux on each ch., 2 aux on tape returns, phone,
RCA, and XLR connectors, lots of patch points)

Recorders:

    Tascam 38 8-track (no dbx)
Tascam 122 cassette deck (no dbx)

Outboard Effects:

    Tascam PB-32 patch bay (2)
    Effectron 256 digital delay
    Roland SDE-3000 digital delay
    ART 01a digital reverb
Aphex Aural Exiter Type B (stereo) *on loan*
Biamp 210 10-band graphic equalizer (stereo)
    DBX 160 compressor/limiter
    DBX 166 compressor/limiter/gate (stereo)
    Boss CE-2 chorus (for guitar)
Boss DE-2 analog delay (for guitar)

Monitoring:

    Technics Tuner/amp
    Yamaha NS-10s studio monitors

Instruments:

    LinnDrum
    Roland Jupiter 6 (MIDI)
Roland Juno 60 (DCB) *on loan*
    Roland MD-8 DCB/MIDI convertor (for Juno 60)
    Roland MSQ-700 sequencer *on loan*
Byter Polysynch (master clock for Linn and MSQ, synch to tape)
Kramer Voyager guitar (with whammy bar, of course)
Gallen Kruger 250ML guitar amp (stereo)
Marshall Cab (4 12" Celestian spkrs)
    Audio Technica ATM-41 mic (2)
    Shure SM-58 mic

Direction...

I will be soon loosing access rights to the Juno 60 and MSQ-700.
The MSQ will be sorely missed and I plan on replacing it (It has
been rumored by Dennis Savage to be $259 in NYC). I don't think I want
to go the computer/sequencing software rout right now. I'm on a
tube all day long and the last thing I want to do when I get home
    is login.

The Juno is another story. I'm now in the "Shall I buy a MIDI
controller with sound modules or another synth that can be used as
a contoller?" boat. I definitely want velocity sens/aftertouch
on whatever I get. I'm keeping the Jupiter for use as a MIDI
traditional analog type sound generator (good bass and piano also).
A friend of mine has a Mirage if I need some sampling done so
    I don't think I want a sampling synth. I don't think the quality
for what I can afford is there yet to buy my own.

Wish list:

MSQ-700 (my very own, I have a library of stuff for it anyway)
    MIDI contoller?
    DXn,TXn synth/module?
    JX8P?
    CZ101? (as a tone generator)
    Yamaha SPX-90 effects processor
Studio quality mic (the mics I have are ok for gigging,
			     but suck in the studio)

369.4More Configs Wanted...JUNIOR::DREHERFri May 30 1986 22:007
Hey, how about some more configs being listed. I'm sure there's
more than 3 out there. Len, I'm waiting for your list so we can
prove you own every piece of MIDI gear known to man and machine.
Anybody got a system based around a MIDI controller? Any MIDI
    controlled robot drummers?

369.5The High and Hot "Studio??"BEAGLE::MULELIDSat May 31 1986 17:3133
As you will see all the stuff I have is in the "budget" class.
It works OK for me, and I think I have got good value for the
money. Here we go.

                 Yamaha DX100

Rythm: Yamaha RX21

BOSS RCL-10 (Micro Rack Compressor/limiter/expander/noise gate)
BOSS BX800 (8 channel stereo mixer)
2x Korg MM25 (multi purpose monitors)

Recording: Fostex X15
                 Fostex MN15 (mini mixer 5 in/1 out, for X15)

                 Div. BOSS effect pedals
                 Trumpet
Uppright Piano (left home in Norway till I go back home)

Wish list: Hybrid Arts or Steinberg Research MIDI software for the ST.
                 Yamaha FB01 expander(s)

Off course I could fill up this notes file with a wish list but this is
what I will buy within the next months I think.
