288.0. "Casio/Mac question" by STAR::MALIK (Karl Malik) Wed Apr 02 1986 16:48

    	A friend of mine has a Casio CZ-101, a Mac, and several
    MIDI software programs.

    	I know nothing about Casios.

    	Question - When doing MIDI 'multi-tracking', how does one
    get access to the Casio's multi-timbral capabilities?

    	We can get it to play back 4 voices at once, but not with
    different timbres.

    							Thanks, Karl

288.1Here's HowERLANG::FEHSKENSWed Apr 02 1986 17:3523
    What you have to do is put it into "SOLO" mode. Then, when you hit
    the MIDI button, you'll get a display that shows the base channel,
    and the program assigned to it lights up (the preset/internal/
    cartridge light, the 1 ... 8 light, and the select light). You can
    change the base channel (it's the one on the left I think) with
    the up down keys. Once you've picked a base channel, you can assign
    programs to the next 3 successive channels by using the up/down
    keys on the channel number on the right side of the display (use
    the cursor key to get to it as usual). Select the program you want,
    and go on to the next channel. You select the program as usual,
    with the preset/internal/cartridge, 1..8 and select keys. The base
    channel notion works as follows - if you pick 1 as the base, you
    receive on 1, 2, 3 and 4. You can assign the same or different
    programs to each channel. If you pick (e.g.) 7 as the base, you
    receive on 7, 8, 9 and 10. Etc. I think they wrap around at the
    top (i.e., if you set the base to 14, you receive on 14, 15, 16
    and 1), but they might not.

    Got it?

288.2And You Can Do it RemotelyERLANG::FEHSKENSWed Apr 02 1986 17:377
    You can also assign programs remotely over the MIDI in by sending
    program changes on the appropriate channels. Again the 4 channels
    are base, base+1, base+2 and base+3. It will only receive on 4
    adjacent channels in SOLO mode.

288.3One More ThingERLANG::FEHSKENSWed Apr 02 1986 17:4217
    Lest you forget - the program change numbers on the CZ-101 are
    disjoint.  They go:

    	MIDI Program 		CZ-101 Program
        change no.

    	 0 - 15			Preset 1 - 16  (9 - 16 = Select 1 - 8)
    	16 - 31			Preset 1 - 16
        32 - 47			Internal 1 - 16
        48 - 63			Internal 1 - 16
        64 - 79			Cartridge 1 - 16
        80 - 95			Cartridge 1 - 16

    I think that's everything you need to know.
