223.0. "Mirage users, disk formatter ?" by EVE::T_ROBERT () Thu Jan 23 1986 19:41

Now that I've intoduced myself it's time for a question...

	To any Mirage owners:

I'm trying to get find some other Mirage owners so that
we may get together and trade some sound diskettes. (Maybe we can try
again Jim) I've got the two that came with it and two others...
One with the sax and trombones and another with an oboe and choir.
(I can't remember the diskette numbers) I'm actually trying to get
together a tentative list of Mirage users for futher reference. So any
replys to this note or to me (EVE::T_ROBERT) would be helpfull.

Also, does anyone have one of the diskette formatters for the Mirage
I've got some blank 3.5's from my friend I'd like to make use of. If not
does anyone know of how to format them some other way ? I'd be willing
to trade some blank diskettes for use of such a thing, it would save me
  a lot of money.

I believe that Ensoniq now sells a disk formatter for ~$20.

Check with Daddy's Junky Music to see if they have it. It would
appear to pay for itself after you format about two diskettes.

Thanks. Daddy's didn't have any in stock, but Union Music
in Worcester does. The price is $19.95. I plan to pick it up this
week and see if there's any "catches" about it.

Hi Tom,

In the January 'MIDI issue' of Keyboard, in the Career Updates
section (I think) there is mention of a Kurzweil user's group which
trade (and/or sell) high-quality samples.

In closing, they mention the possibility of doing the same
thing for Mirages. Might be worth a postcard to find out more.

Sounds interesting. I keep delaying my subscription to Keyboard...
Think I'll go down and pick up this month's issue. (According to some
previous notes here though, it's looks like I'd get quicker by going to
the store than by getting a subscription!)

Tom -

I have a subscription ti Keyboard. Besides being a HECK of a lot cheaper, I
get my issue about a week before it hits the newsstands.

Oh well, maybe that's just Ohio. Things tend to run about 5 years in the
past here 8^).

Well, as someone mentioned earlier in this file, it would make
for since for it to hit the newstands first... that way people would
be more liable to get it instead of waiting to read one of their friends.

I'll agree with the price difference though, so I think I'll get
  the subscription anyways.

To answer my own initial question:	I recently
purchased the Ensonique disk formatter from Union Music, Worcester.
It costs $20.00., and it was well worth it. Any standard 3-1/2 inch
disk will work, even if it's already formatted. It's real easy to do,
it takes about 3 min per disk. I've already done 16 which more than makes
up for the price of the formatting diskette !
