This topic will serve as a repository on how to order and submit music
    for the COMMUSIC tapes.

Only those responsible for compilation and distribution of these tapes
should contribute to this topic. Each tape should have two replies,
    entitled as follows:

 	1. COMMUSIC n - How To Contribute

Include who's compiling the liner notes, and how to send them.

 	2. COMMUSIC n - How To Order

Each reply should contain text describing each of these procedures.

Compiled liner notes should be placed in the next topic. Per tape
reviews should take place in a seperate topic.

-< How to order Commusic III and IV >-

Commusic III and Commusic IV ordering instructions:

After much consideration this is how I've decided to handle the
ordering process for the Commusic tapes.

    There are several methods.

    1. The preferred method

Make a copy off a friend who already has one.

    2. Less preferred

    You send me:

    	1) a $4 check via US MAIL (only U.S. Dollars will be accepted)

NO INTEROFFICE MAIL ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED

    	2) Tell me whether you want Commusic III or Commusic IV

I send you a Maxell UDXL-II C-90 with the requested Commusic tape
on it in a padded envelope via US mail. This is essentially
    my materials cost.

    My address is:

    		Dave Blickstein
    		96 Robinson Road
    		Hudson, NH 03051

Please do not send me stuff through interoffice mail. You may get
me, you, or *us* into trouble. I've already been "caught" and they
    are watching me.

This price only applies to U.S. addresses. If it costs more to
send where you are, you must send me enough money to cover it.
I will return the excess amount. I will NOT front any money.

The default noise reduction is Dolby B. You can also request no
noise reduction. You can ask for other kinds of NR and if I can
do it (I have a borrowed deck capable of doing it) I will, but in
case I don't, you have to pick a fallback of either Dolby B or no
    NR at all.

PLEASE: Do NOT send me a tape to put Commusic on. I don't always
have two decks available. Thus when I need to make copies, I borrow
a deck and make several copies at once. This allows me to make
copies at MY convenience, and not every time I receive a tape.
This is not a for-profit operation. I only charge my normal cost. Don't
believe me? Get a friend to make a copy - won't bother me at all.

If you are in Europe, send your order to Paul Kent (ERIC::KENT).

    3. Discount plan

You stop by my office at Spit Brook (ZKO2-3), give me $2.50, I give
you a Commusic tape. No postage costs. I'll TRY to keep my
office stocked up on tapes. No guarantees.

Again, please do NOT use interoffice mail!

10.5COMMUSIC VI - How To SubmitDYO780::SCHAFERBrad ... DTN 433-2408Thu Sep 29 1988 20:3760
This note discusses how to submit pieces for the COMMUSIC VI
compilation. Paul (PAULJ::) Harriman is compiling this tape.

+----

You may send your submissions to:

	Paul Harriman
	23 Partridge Hill
	Colchester, VT 05446

If sending by registered mail, send to:

	Active Audio
	1908 Airport Pkwy
	South Burlington VT 05403
	Attn: Paul Harriman

Group submissions in the order you wish them to be played. The order
they are on the submission will be the order they will appear on the
master. I will ignore "special instructions" about how to prepare the
    different songs in a set.

Please have all your submissions as consistently recorded as possible.
If you can make a reference tone, please do. I will assume -3dB
standard unless told otherwise. Please do NOT place the tone in between
submissions, and PLEASE leave five (5) seconds between the tone and the
    beginning of your songs.

In the interests of fairness to all submittors, I would like to ask
that you do not submit more than 12 minutes of material at one time.
I'll accept 00:12:30-count stuff, if it can't be helped, but no 15
    minute sets, unless we negotiate.

Submissions will appear on the tape on a first-come-first-on basis.

Please send the titles and author(s), in the order they appear on the
tape. I don't read minds, my apologies.

Please document the type of noise reduction. I'll accept the following:

    Dolby B or C
    DBX Type II

Please submit your Compact Cassettes at 1-7/8 ips.

I will accept VHS Hifi, although the tape MUST be complete and quiet.

If you give me a reel, it must be 7" or smaller, the speed of the tape
must be 7-1/2 ips or less, and no noise reduction may be used.

Do NOT use interoffice mail to send tapes, orders, or anything except
maybe special instructions. I'll follow db's lead and not get into
    trouble that way.

Also, submittors, please indicate whether or not you want your tape to
be used as your Commusic VI tape. It should save you the cost of a
    tape.

Just an update. Currently there have been three submissions,
totaling 26 minutes, out of a total possible 90 minutes.

At this rate, VI will be released in the February/March timeframe.

That date will be brought in if I can get more submissions.
        Think about that.

I'd encourage our insecure composer to contribute, we've had everything
from Pop to data dumps (IMHO) and personally I've enjoyed most of
    it.

I've got an idea. Since there's 70 minutes of blank tape left,
I'll just send in 70 minutes of random computer music to fill it
out, OK? But it may take me a couple days, so only put it on if
it fits because no one else has contributed yet, OK?

10.12We don't need no stinkin' standardsDREGS::BLICKSTEINYo!Thu Nov 03 1988 16:3618
    To our reluctant submittor:

There are NO STANDARDS for submission. I would be outraged
if a Commusic tape compiler attempted to apply standards,
and would move for his removal.

The only time I have EVER rejected a submission was when it
just too long (i.e., I have this basic notion that no one
submittor should have more than about 20% (at MOST!) on
    	the tape.

I have never rejected stuff on content.

So PLEASE submit your stuff without fear and without putting your
ego into it. Most of us just wanna associate a musical identity
    with your node name.

Since these front topics are intended to be info repositories, please
refrain from discussion in these topics. I'll go ahead and leave this
one in here, since it makes sense.

I'll get to posting rules and regs (or lack thereof, db) if I ever get
    time. Thanks.

10.14[well, almost EOF]...PAULJ::HARRIMANTHINK before you VOTE.It's the LAWThu Nov 03 1988 17:4624

Well, Brad, where can we move this off to? New note?

    To put things in perspective:

I am not an editor. I don't intend to edit ANYONE's submissions
except my own. You are responsible for editing your submissions,
or *not* editing them, as the case has been occasionally. But that's
the fun part. Come on, we're all working people.

The only condition/standard I impose is purely mechanical in nature
and a source of courtesy for the poor slob (aka myself) who agreed
to compile these. That is, keep it under 12 minutes (hear that
Janzen?), and give me a reference tone to set my levels by, so that
rotten overloaded dogfart-like-noises don't get blamed on my nicely
calibrated decks. Your musical content is your business, and without
ratholing ourselves (this has been "discusted" recently) I feel
that sharing our music has lots of value, reviews and retorts
    notwithstanding.

Okay, I've said my piece. You folks who wish to submit tapes, please
do so when you feel ready. This hasn't been much work so far.

Temporarily, both (sob!) of my Nakamichi cassette dex are defunct.
Record heads wore out within 6 weeks of one another. One deck is
in to Nakamichi Service in California, where they seem to move at
    glacier speed.

So until further notice I will *NOT* be able to make copies of COMMUSIC
*I* for anyone.. I have one submission which I WILL copy when able.

10.16COMMUSIC VI Ordering InformationTALK::HARRIMANBeep Bop DiddlyupFri Apr 21 1989 13:5644

At long last, Commusic VI is ready for distribution.

There are two methods by which you can get the tape. Which method
you choose depends on the quality of the tape you desire.

	1) The highest quality tapes are available from:

		Paul (PAULJ::) Harriman
		23 Partridge Hill
		Colchester VT 05446

			-or-

		Dave (DREGS::) Blickstein
		96 Robinson Rd
		Hudson, NH 03051

			-or-

		Paul (WARDER::) Kent  (European orders)
		(See previous notes for availability)

	2) If you know someone with a copy you can get a (+1 generation)
	   copy from that person.

SEE NOTE 10.4 FOR ORDERING PHILOSOPHY.

Basically the same general rules apply. You must provide us with
either a C-90 cassette or $3.00, plus either a reusable cassette
mailer or $1.00, plus either stamps or cash equivalent to send
the tape through the U.S. Mail. None of us will front money or
tapes! If you do NOT want Dolby-B, you must specify the noise reduction
method (or lack thereof), otherwise that's what you'll get.

In addition, via our Southern NH outlet, tapes will be available
via various Commusic functions such as LERDS-BIMs, DECMS, and other
	announced events.

Specific questions will be cheerfully answered. ;^) Send mail.

10.17COMMUSIC VII Submission info...XERO::ARNOLDlaugh at yourself; join the crowdWed Sep 27 1989 15:59112
    Addendum to the attached note:

I now have submissions from 4 people. These total up to about 45
minutes, I think. I'm working on mine and hope others are doing the
same. If you intend to submit in the next 2-4 weeks, please send me
mail at XERO::Arnold so I can start figuring out when the tape will be
"complete". I'll notify people via Email if/when I actually receive
    their submission.

Note 2080.0 COMMUSIC VII - in memory of Dave Orin 8 replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As mentioned in the Dave Orin note, I'm volunteering to compile the
COMMUSIC VII tape in memory of Dave. Although it's not required that
the submissions be anything other than the standard COMMUSIC fare,
those influenced by Dave's COMMUSIC contributions to you and your music
    are especially welcome.

Most of the rest of this entry is a rehash of the COMMUSIC VI "call for
participation". Thanks to Paul Harriman for stting these guidelines
down so well that I can just borrow them and put them here.

    On with the show...

    Set Order, Length, and Time
    ===========================

If you have submissions, please group them in the order you wish them
to be played. The order they are on the submission will be the order
they will appear on the master. I will ignore "special instructions"
about how to prepare the different songs in a set.

Please have all your submissions as consistently recorded as possible.
If you can make a reference tone, please do. I will assume -3dB
standard unless told otherwise. Please do NOT place the tone in
between submissions, and PLEASE leave five (5) seconds between the
tone and the beginning of your songs.

In the interests of fairness to all submittors, I would like to
ask that you do not submit more than 12 minutes of material at one
time. I'll accept 00:12:30-count stuff, if it can't be helped, but
no 15 minute sets, unless we negotiate.

Please send the titles and author(s), in the order they appear on
the tape. I don't read minds, my apologies.

    Acceptable Media
    ================

    I can accept the following:
    	- standard cassettes (1 7/8 ips) with Dolby B or C noise reduction
    	- VHS HiFi
    	- Toshiba DX900 PCM digital audio
    	- 7" reels (1/4" tape) with dbx II noise reduction (or no N/R)

My intention is to dub all submissions onto the Toshiba PCM format and
make copies from there. I'll do my best at getting the best possible
sound quality. Since our equipment probably isn't a perfect fit,
please bear with me. If I get a sticky problem, I'll ask for help here
in COMMUSIC or, maybe, request some of the local experts to help me
    out.

Please tell me exactly what setup your submission is when you send it.
It's not always obvious whether a casette has no N/R, dolby B, dolby C,
    etc.

You may send your submissions to:

	John E. Arnold
    	251 West Main Street
    	Westborough, MA 01581

Do NOT use interoffice mail to send tapes, orders, etc. If you have a
question about what's going on please send me Email at AIADM::Arnold or
post a note as a reply to this note. I'll answer as soon as I can.

Also, submittors, please indicate whether or not you want your tape
to be used as your Commusic VII tape. It should save you the cost
    of a tape.

    Ordering Information
    ====================

I'll defer ordering information until I see how quickly the
submissions come in. I don't want any up-front money for tape,
postage, etc. UNTIL the tape is just about ready to ship. The ordering
information will be posted as a reply to this note.

You copyright-protected folks, please send the date of copyright.
(Though past experiences tell me that we probably don't do enough
posting of the notice to guarantee your rights. Still, we try.) You
non-copyright folks, you take yer chances. You cover players, this is a
not-for-profit tape, and the 5 cents-per-copy royalties can be
negotiated in a settlement with the author, providing the author
    complains...

    Let the tape begin...

    - John Arnold -

    P.S. I'll add a COMMUSIC_VII keyword to this note so it's relatively
    easy to find.

10.18COMMUSIC VII submission deadline - Jan. 12, 1990 XERO::ARNOLDDoormat of the UniverseMon Dec 04 1989 12:5450
    Ho Ho Ho...

Well, it's time to force most of us out of COMMUSIC inactivity (I plead
as guilty as the next) by setting an actual deadline for COMMUSIC VII
submissions. To date, I have ~45 minutes of submissions from the
    following people:

    		Steve Sherman
    		Tom Janzen
    		Brian Rost
    		Karl Moeller

Others (including me) are "working" on a submission. I don't want to
release the tape without 90 minutes of music (the de facto COMMUSIC
standard) so am now posting a deadline:

    *** FRIDAY, January 12, 1990 ***

is the last day for me to receive COMMUSIC VII submissions. After
that, I will allow other submittors to go over their 15 minute
allocation so I can fill the tape up and make it available quickly.
I set the date in January to let some of us catch up on our recording
after the rush of the holiday season.

Please take a moment to commit one of your sequences/performances
to tape! We all look forward to hearing what you do with that
equipment we spend hours talking/reading about!

*** For full submission details, see note 10.17	***

I'll be on vacation off-and-on between now and Christmas but I WILL
send confirmation of receipt of a submission as soon as possible. If
you mail a submission and don't hear from me in a reasonable time,
please send mail! That way, we'll both now what the status of your
    submission is.

Thanks for your help in making COMMUSIC VII a fitting tribute to Dave
    Orin.

And, guys, remember not to work *too* hard on your submissions. It'll make
me look bad since mine is unfinished, seeins what I was sans gear before getting
to finish it. ;^) Reason I submitted it was because it was on my system when I
sold portions of it to Dave. Turned out that he was the last one to hear it
on the system or on tape. He listened on headphones. After his death, I gave
it a listen on tape. It caused me to remember how much he helped me out during
that hard time. I *will* get back to it, someday and in a big way. Anyway,
that's what I think of, bad as my submission is, when I hear it.

10.26COMMUSIC VII update (it's almost done)XERO::ARNOLDWork: Day care for grown-upsWed Jan 17 1990 16:4717
    Hello again.

Well, after that last publication of 1/12/90 as "the deadline", I did
manage to get a flurry of submissions. Now it's time for me to finish
getting the master in order and get ready to make copies. There are a
few people with whom I have negotitated a mix from their master tapes
right to my master tape. I'll try to work out those logistics in the
    next few weeks.

Once the master tape is complete and I'm ready to start making copies,
I'll post a follow-up note here and let you know about ordering
    information, etc.

Thanks for your continued patience and stay tuned. Send questions,
    comments, complaints, etc. to XERO::Arnold.

10.27COMMUSIC VII... coming soon...XERO::ARNOLDAll things to all people except youFri Feb 16 1990 12:3821
    Hi!

I'd like to apologize for the delay in making COMMUSIC VII
available. In addition to many delays on my part (work, life, etc.), I
have also been working to get an example of Dave Orin's sequences on
the tape. This should happen next week. At that time, the mastering
will be complete and I will post a note indicating how people can
contact me if they would like to obtain COMMUSIC VII.

A few marketing tid-bits... After all the fuss about lack of
submissions, I now may have TOO MUCH material but am juggling things
around to make it all fit... The overall quality (I think) it very
high. (This from someone who has never gotten around to a formal
review of any COMMUSIC tape even though I have them all.)... A great
variety showcasing a breadth of talent amongst the COMMUSICians...

Watch for an announcement in a week and a bit...

    Again, sorry for the delay.

    Yet another COMMUSIC VI update...

Due to weather and work, the arrangements I had made to include some
Dave Orin sequences on COMMUSIC VII have been delayed until next week.
At that time, COMMUSIC VII will be complete. Watch for notice of its
    completion next week.

Sorry for the delay, but I feel it is worthwhile to include a
    representative "sample" of Dave's work.

Thanks again for your continued patience.

COMMUSIC VII - in memory of Dave Orin

    Finally!

The COMMUSIC VII master has been completed. I am rounding up the final
liner notes from the submittors. These liner notes will be posted
after they are gathered and edited in one place. (a day or so).

In the meantime, people who would like to obtain a copy of COMMUSIC VII
can get the details by sending me mail at XERO::Arnold.

Thanks to the submittors for sharing their work with us and thanks to
the COMMUSIC community for being patient while this all happened. I
hope it was worth the wait.

    I have a copy now.

I'm willing to make copies for folks in the greater Nashua, NH area.

The deal is, you either give me a (new unused) tape, or supply one for
you for $2.50 (Maxell UDXL-II C-90) which is my cost.

Only caveat is that I will refuse to subject my expensive duping deck
to garbage tapes ("Wreck-o-tone", etc.) that I know some folks like to
use and thus I reserve right-of-refusal if you supply the tape.

Announcing a "price reduction". Effective immediately.

Last night, I received a large order of TDK SA-90 tapes for $2 each.
These are roughly equivalent to Maxell UDXL-II C-90's.

Plus, every 8th "customer" gets a free upgrade to SAX-90. (Anyone
buying multi-packs of tapes these days will probably know why I'm
    doing this.)

I'd request though that if you're gonna do it by mail, you order
I, II, VI, and VII from the original "producers" (I only did III-V).
You'll get a better copy, and they're really who your "supposed to"
order from. I mainly intended my offer to be anyone who happens
to come to my facility (Spit Brook Road, Nashua NH) and wants to
    save the hassle of mail/checks/etc.

We've kicked this idea around before, but I'm starting to get serious
    about it.

I now have about 1/3 of a C-90 full of factory demos.

I don't know why - but I *LOVE* listening to demos. Some of them are
really very interesting musically, plus it's neat to hear what a
    particular piece is capable of.

    So far I've got a tape with demos for U-220, VFX-SD, SQ-80, ESQ-1,
Proteus 1 and I could put a demo of the HR-16 on there.

Is anyone interested in doing a Commusic tape full of factory demos?

Or is this just some peculariar fetish that I'm uniquely afflicted
    with?

Anyway, I volunteer to act as collector.
