	Anything else of interest:

Well, except on the trumpet, I am not much of an accomplished
musician (read - no great formal keyboard training (yet),
not much formal music theory training, etc.). I am planning
on (and am underway) in changing that. I have always been
interested in music and understand it in basic terms.
I would like to become a good 'hobbyist' composer and
	    performer.

	    My current set-up is:

		Roland D-50 keyboard/synth
		   " MT32 tone module
		   " M160 mixer
Atari 520STFM (1meg) monochrome and Passports Master Tracks Pro
		360 systems MIDIpatcher
		Yamaha KS10 keyboard speakers

My envisioned set-up (not dream set up):

		Roland D-50
		   " D-110 tone module
		   " S-550 sampler module
		   " M160
		Kawai K-5 keyboard/synth
Atari 520STFM (2.5 or 4 meg) MultiSync type monitor
			30 meg harddrive and C-LAB Notator/Creator
		MX-8 MIDI patcher/whatever
Alesis HR16 (or Roland R8 if it is worth it)
		Roland SRV2000 reverb
		Alesis Quadverb (or similar)
		2 other various effects boxes
		4-track cassette
		HiFi VCR
		Alesis microgate
		Alesis microlimiter
		Alesis microexpander

My dream set-up: multiply envisioned by $35000 :-)

I like performing, and composing, but I feel by far my greatest gift is
in arranging. I do contemporary Christian material, mostly original, and when
performing, I have my midid 'band' back me up while I sing and play either piano
or guitar.

I Play in a Duo around town & use lots of artificial accompanyment. Play
Guitar (main instrument) and keyboards. Used to play: Drums & Saxaphone
(not at the same time) & Diddle with: Banjo, Violin & Trumpet.

MIDI Equipment: Alesis MMT-8 Sequencer (Mediocre construction), Casio
		    CZ101, Roland MT-32, Yamaha 2.8" quick disk & Suzuki
XG1m MIDI guitar (sort of). Plan to add more rack gear.

Other Stuff: Teac 144 Portastudio, Assorted Mixers, Reverb units,
guitar stomp boxes, Twin Reverb, & a few guitars (I
like to build my own these days). Various Microphones
and a home made PA system (6 channels - 150 watts).

Goals: Play lots of places (mostly cover tunes) & sequence the
daylights out of anything that I can. I want to continue
doing radio spots for local merchants. Would like to
play at more Ski Resorts in the winter (great snow out
this way), and mountain communities in the summer
(great hiking also). I'd like to add AI to the
sequencer system (probably by adding a Macintosh) that
I currently use, I want the music to be more dynamic,
		    but want it sequenced too!

Non-Goals: Creating patches for my synthesizers. This takes to
much time for what benifit I get from it.

	  Music SOFTWARE:
I've written synthesis software in assembler for
TRS-80 and PDP-11, and in BASIC for Amiga (don't laugh; your
MIDI h/w can't do what those programs can). I've built minor
hardware for use in music, and built kits for major
hardware. I build my own cables and interfaces.
I have a computer and a synth (and Len's MIDI interface).
In college, took a year of counterpoint, a year of
harmony, a year of composition, a semester of early-20th
century techniques, and coached performances of my pieces.
Built a synth in 1981 partly from a magazine article.

Most of my experience has been in engineering for live broadcast
or exhibit, or onto tape. My keyboard chops are nearly nonexistent.

I'm not that interested building "mainstream" music; I'm much more
interested in what Eirikur Hallgrimsson calls the "Old Electronic Music
Esthetic". Things like patches that play themselves (or nearly so),
music you can neither sing nor dance to, the so-called "Gas Music from
Jupiter" so often maligned in these hallowed sectors.
3.19Watch out - a marketing type!!!MCIS2::ROACHFri Sep 30 1988 20:3835
I've read all of the other items and I feel a little out of place.

Geoff Roach - Corporate Systems Group - CASE marketing (non-technodweeb).

Musician - Woodwind player suffering at great pains to learn to play piano and
keyboards.

Equipment - Yamaha DX7 with E! and TX81Z
WX7 Wind Controller - used to create good sounds and scare the
h--l out of animals and little old ladies.
            Digitech DSP 128 effects
            Little itty-bitty TOA keyboard amps
IBM PC with Roland MPU-401 and lots of programs including some
bad sequencers I paid too much for.

Non-midi - 5 saxophones of various shapes and sizes
                       2 flutes of various sizes
                       clarinet and bass clarinet

Experience - lots of bands and shows - Nelson Riddle, Sammy Davis, Jr. - big
production stuff. Mostly combos and smaller groups. Currently looking for a
gig.

Goals 1. Play enough keyboards to make my horn playing better and to be
able to perform on a gig if need be.

           2. Explore wind controllers and synthesis to use it in a musical
way - no gimicks. (getting closer to this one).

           3. Play gigs!!!!

This is more or less hobby/fooling around stuff right now.
I play keyboards and a little guitar. Although I play mostly
on synths, I can't beat the feeling of playing a real acoustic
    piano.

    I've written/recorded a few songs, and have a lot more I haven't
gotten around to recording yet. I've been in and out of local bands
with friends and I'm currently joining a new one.

My housemate plays drums and we're currently fixing up our basement
to be a studio. Nothing fancy, just enough for a band (such as ours)
to do some demo tapes. Only 4 tracks now, but hoping to bump it up
    to 8 in the future.

    		years of kindergarten duty..
3 daughters either at or about to enter teenagehood
who do their best to keep my wallet from MIDI gear...
Oh, and 1 b-flat clarinet and e-flat alto sax...

    Experience:
Played clarinet, tuba, and string-base from elementary
thru 1st semester at Berklee. Have played in rock bands
since '65 or so. I have written some 100+ pop/rock/folk
tunes all though nothing in the last 12. My wife says
I might be able to purchase some gear if I write some
    		new material..

I've been recording other folks plus my own stuff
on various cheap geer since '68. I've kind'a enjoyed
the challenge of trying to make good sounds with
very low-tech equipment. Tuned out long enough so
that I was blown away that you could get something
like the little Fostex for as cheap as it was - last
time I looked, the only thing available (sort of cheap)
    		was the teac 3340s.

I read this file fairly religiously and basically drool
over all the toys. I am working on some very good excuses
for purchasing a keyboard/synth for the sake of my
middle daugther who is developing some pretty good
keyboard chops and deserves better(sure). I'm about ready
to get real reckless and purchase the cheap Yamaha
    	        pads(maybe).

goals:	I studied arrainging/composition while at Berklee. Although
i gave-up the formal education for hippy-hood at the
time, that remains my primary interest. Subsequentially,
I'd like an orchestra at my finger-tips so I can
continue to explore how much noise i can make. Since
    		I deplore 1980's production values, I'd like 1980's
gear and make it sound better! I'd also like 8-tracks
so i can cut down the bouncing. I keep remembering how
Sgt. Pepper was recorded to keep the inspiration
	        inspired...

    		I've also got great initials....

Mitch Norcross: thinker and doer at Generic Sound (a Macintosh based
sound studio). I have the long term fantasy of scoring music for film.
My short term fantasy is to produce one or more cassette albums of my
music. I also enjoy designing computers during the day.

Some of my listening influences are as follows:

Experimental - WZBC No Commercial Potential
Atonal - WGBH Chamberworks
Minimal - Philip Glass, Steve Reich
Electronic - Wendy Carlos, Planetarium music, Music from the Hearts of Space
Classical - Ravel, Debussy, Rachmaninoff
Fusion - WERS The Fusebox, Bill Bruford, Chick Corea, Alan Holdsworth
Soundtrack - Hitchcock Thrillers, Nightmare on Elm Street, Fatal Attraction
New Age - Liz Story, the Windham Hill Samplers, George Winston
Rock - UK, Todd Rundgren and Utopia, King Crimson, Yes, Rush
Country - none
Religious - not much

Most of the music that I have produced to date would fall into the
experimental, atonal, minimal, electronic, or rock catagories (or some
combination thereof). I am still searching for my real calling.

You can hear a piece of my music entitled "Visions" on the Commusic IV
compilation tape (see note 10.4 for ordering info).

See ya'
/Mitch

Well, a synth buff I'm not. I'm a guitarist interested in home
recording, and my primary interest in this file is in helping me
in that end -- Drum machines, signal processors, etc. At some point
I probably will be buying a synth, but right now, that's not cost
    effective.

Hi, Boy was I glad to stumble across this conference. I am sitting
at my VT220 and salivating. I been into synthesizers and music since
I was about 8 years old. I was formally trained in the woodwind
insturments, sax, clarinet, flute etc. However I picked up keyboards
on my on "you can tell when you hear me play", and haven't put them
down since. I like all styles but perfer heavy groove, funk, jazz
music. I currently own the following,

         YAMAHA DX7 II/fd
         Akai AX80
         Kawai K1m
Amiga Computer with Pro MIDI Studio software

         Yamaha RX15 drum machine

I'd love to hear from someone "ANYONE" and talk about stuff. I'm
not a great keyboard player but love it as a hobby.

       talk to you soon,

Atari bought to help with D50 programming and as the best way to

    Gidday Folks

Lindsay Whyte here from Wellington New Zealand.

Music has been my cause of poverty. I did have intentions of making
money from it, but heck, I just really enjoy playing for myself.

I started with a Roland JUNO 106 back in '84, and bought some
peripheral equipment to make better use of the keyboard. These included
    a Yamaha RX50 drum machine, MSQ-100 Sequencer, and a Fostex 250
4 track recorder. The truth of the matter is, that I originally
was going to buy a house, but the deal fell through, and when I'm
depressed I like to spend money (if I've got it...not very often).
My house deposit was looking at me, and the local music shop was
having a sale...and the rest is history. Frankly I have never looked
back. I get more enjoyment out of music, than I would worrying abaout
    a house.

Feeling somewhat musically confined, I went out and bought myself
a KORG M1 earlier this year. WOW! Have I had a great time, you betcha!
My only regret is that it doesn't come with an onboard sampler.
    Sigh!

However, Roland (my pet name for the JUNO), now sits and waits eagerly
for someone to play it. I am hesitant about selling it because it
is a proper synthesizer, as opposed to something which has sampled
sounds, and I KNOW that I won't get very much for it (no velocity
or aftertouch...old technology). I was hoping by reading this
conference, other noters might be able to give me some ideas about
configuring my collection (or scrapping it if it's not worth the
    effort)

Recently, my local music store lent me a Roland W30 for appraisal.
Phew, am I sure glad I went M1. I found the W30 very limiting, and
not really user friendly. Also, the sampling is very confined, and
extremely difficult to use. (That's my opinion anyway, enough said)

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing from some of you M1 buffs out
there, and hear about your thoughts on the M1. I personally am wrapped
with it. Now my next step it to obtain a decent sampler.

Thanks for listening to my rave...please resume normal noting

Hello, my name is Bryon Drigian. I have been interested in music since
day 2 (day 1 I rested), but I have never been able to play an
instrument. I have turned my energies toward speaker design and
construction and as such I started a business a few years back. It is
my belief that in order for me to build speakers that will recreate
the sound the musician and producer strugled to achieve I need to have
a better feel for music itself, ie) what happens inside a grand piano
and the air around it when a pianist hits middle C, that it's happening
when a speaker TRYs to reproduce it.

I think I have a fairly diverse taste in music, but that may need
to be recalibrated after reading through this notes file. I listen
to classical, jazz(I love musical jazz), rock(not too much top40 or
pop rock), and alot of instrumental stuff (Time Warp, Alan Parsen's,
Kitaro). Basically I just love music.

I am working as a Software Eng in Littelton MA (LKG2-2/Q7). I have
done alittle PC programming to generate sounds, but nothing to
extensive, although I would love to attempt to write some code to a
machine that could produce real music. The only machines I know though
are computers. I am not familiar with Yamaha and MIDI and some other
names I quickly saw in this note. Oh well, I guess I better start
reading... Seems like a great notes file.

Hello, my name is Bob Mercier. I have been drumming for 17 years
and playing guitar for about 7 years. Now is the time ot venture
into a different world. I just purchased my first piece of midi
gear about a week ago. My current setup now is:

    Roland D20
    Peavey XR600 w/2 115 cabs

This is just the beggining...I think. I dont know much at all about
what I am setting out to do. Alls that I know is that its going
to be interesting. Im so much of a begginner that I couldnt tell
you the difference between a partial vs. patch and so on and so
on. I hope this conference will be able to help shed some light
    on the situation.

I've just popped into this conference to get a tune-up. For the most
part, I feel like I'm playing out of my league (so to speak), since I'm
just a computer-techie with about 15 years of musical training which
hasn't been really used in again as long a time.

I have a computer, and now, thanks to an avid interest in Sierra
    On-Line games, am the proud(?) owner of a Roland MT-32 + MPU-401
    interface to my PC 386.

After a friend came over a few weeks ago with his Yamaha Keyboard, I
feel myself being dragged back into playing real music. But after the
$500. expense for the synth, it will be a while before I can afford a
    keyboard.

For now, I'll be content with composing/programming music "The Hard
Way", and will appreciate any technical assistance I can get (re: note

    thanks,

I'm Charlie Bennett. I'm in because y'all are talking about
recording in some of the notes.

I was a bass player for a long time and now I'm learning guitar.
	I play a Rickenbacker 610 (solid six-string) thru a Fender Super 60
Combo (1x12). I get together with a bunch of like minded others
twice a week and make loud pop noise.

I'm not into programming when I leave work and keys never turned

    A wild imagination....

An Amiga 2000 complete with obs and gobs of music software and a MIDI
interface. Currently I get lost in making exotic riffs with my Kawai
    PH50.

I studied guitar and learned keyboarding on my own. My first real
experience with electronic music was using and recording on what is
now considered an antique MOOG that was physically larger than myself.
Since then I have been corrupt.

I need good suggestions to help me spend my music money wisely... I
have been spying on this notes conference since I got to Digital.
I finally got enough guts to admit to you guys that there is someone
else watching you in the clubhouse.

Someday I'd like to do some serious recording and grab some other
people and put a group together. I'd like to do more experimenting
and try to nail some of my wild stuff down in composition.

    We'll see....

      Group: Software Usability Engineering

I've been with DEC for over 8 years as part of the Software Usability
Engineering group. Our focus is on trying to make computer systems
more useful, usable, and appropriate for our customers. My current
work is on Presence, or multi-sensory I/O, where we are working on
bringing the senses of vision, touch, and hearing to the use of
computers. I've described this more in note 2171, where I got
some help from Commusic folks on our choice of synthesizer. We'll be
adding sampler capabilities next fiscal year.

Besides the direct work application, I'm interested in Commusic from
the musical perspective. I played trumpet for 20 years, including
performance in nearly every instrumental music group at MIT, our own
brass quintet, a few community music groups in the Boston area, and
several summers at Interlochen when I was in high school. About three
years ago I started taking voice lessons, and have sung in a few
community theater productions, and in the Boston Symphony
Orchestra/Tanglewood Festival Chorus' performances of the Berlioz
Requiem last September. I took piano lessons from ages 5 to 9, and
have rudimentary keyboard skills (better than many other of my musician
friends who play other instruments, but not to be confused with a
    real pianist).

Computer music has been an interest of mine since my MIT days. In
fact, my Bachelor's thesis in computer science at MIT was done with
Barry Vercoe at the Experimental Music Studio (one of the groups that
became part of the Media Lab). It was on a program called Scot, for
score translation, which lets composers enter scores to the Music-11
system in an alphanumeric notation - for example, c4 is a c quarter
note. This worked best for Music-11 scores of traditional-sounding
music in traditional scales. The score editor idea wasn't new to me,
but my version was a cleaner, more extensible and maintainable
implementation with some added composer-friendly features from the
previous score editor. I'm told that it's still in use at the lab
today, even though this was done in 1979. I hadn't done much with this
interest in computer music since then, outside of being a listener,
until I started my presence work last year.

By the way, my workstation is named for John Bavicchi, who is sort of
the composer in residence, conductor's best buddy, and spiritual
advisor of the MIT Concert Band, with whom I was principal trumpet
and program note writer for many years. I don't think Bavicchi has
    written any computer music, though.

Although I don't have any of the fancy equipment that i have seen

designed some interesting stuff. I can also modify existing equipment
given a little time ( and a good schematic! or a lot of time and a
prayer.) My most recent build is a vocal eliminator (center track,
not just vocal) that costs under $7.00 to build. I like to hack
circuits. I also am building my own keyboard synth (so anyone that
knows some good chips I'd appreciate the info.)

I also sing on the side and have done some amateur work. My friends
tell me that I should try to find a band or recording studio because
they say I'm good, but I'd rather hear it from someone who REALLY knows
music. I am also interested in sampling circuits and digital
storage/editing techniques. Just a hardware hack to the bone!!!!

If you would like to contact me, my system is fstvax::mouton or at dtn
249-4919, but I am rarely there, so it is easier to catch me by mail.

Hope to hear from you soon. (P.S. I have a 2 and 1/2 octave range)

3.77New Kid on the BlockHAMER::LAMORGESEThu May 10 1990 18:1832
    Hi,

My name is Pat Lamorgese, and I work at UKO.
I spent my last two years in a working band, The Imposters, doing
cover material throughout the N.Y. area. The material covered ranged
from R & B, Wilson Pickett/Steve Cropper Stax sound, through older
English Rock, Beatles/Stones/Who/Badfinger, and included Oldie
Standards, Eddie Cochran/Elvis Presley/Lieber and Stoller, concluding
    with pop and New-Wave, Elvis Costello/Squeeze/Crowded House/Tom
Petty/Cougar. Most of the material was predominated with vocal
harmonies, which is the reason the Beatles' material worked so well.
Live I played with a Roland HS 10, through a Peavy 200 watt amp,
which provided a very adaptable environment for the varied selection
in that I could switch from a synth string sound to a Hammond Organ
sound with the press of a button. I especially recommend the "Cheezy
Organ" preset, which accurately duplicates the Farfisa sound used
on so many Costello tunes, i/e "Radio, Radio", and often used for
    "Surf" music.
I currently am home studio bound, and have patched the
Roland as a slave into my latest addition, a Yamaha YS 200 workstation
to which I have added an Oberheim rack mount MS1000 module. I also
have an old ARP Quandra analog synth and a Hoerner Pianette/Clavinet
Duo, just for laughs, and to use as an analog lead instrument.
I have been using a Roland Drum machine, and a Boss Dr. Rhythm machine.
    Thanks for letting me aboard.

Bill Grundmann, by day I'm a computer logic designer at MR01.

interests: programming, composition, redefining what music is, computed
video/audio "light shows" (for lack of a better name), maybe fame

    non-interests: performance, audiophiling, maybe fortune

    rambling story follows ---

Dabbled in music from back in my Junior high school days. Started with
some friends doing weird record mixes using a modified Radio Shack
quadraphonic deck. Halloween nights were filled with unearthly sounds
    around my house.

Learned guitar, built all those Popular Electronics sound boxes which
evolved into my own effects panel (as I recall, it had fuzz tone,
compression, wah-wah, ring modulation, some LFO's and envelope
followers - it died long ago) I REALLY wanted a six string pickup for
my guitar... Later I wanted a NINE string pickup. Played in a few "one
gig" bands - that stopped when I got to college due to lack of time.
Along the way I got into banging on the piano. I tried singing - but
that was a lost cause - what can you do with a 1/2 octave range?

In college (UConn), I did an independant study to build a two voice
synthesizer (nothing fancy) and program the lab's PDP11/10 to play a
few songs. Got real interested in computer music: my dream to compose
music with my own music programming language began there. What I
really wanted was a degree in Electronic Music, all UConn could offer
was a EE/CS degree or a Fine Arts degree.

I thought I had to decide: Chose computers as a profression - and music
    as a hobby.

After graduating and joining DEC, I started to be able to afford some
equipment. Got an ARP Omni and a Robin (VT180), and built an interface
board and wrote some software... I found 64K of memory to be awfully
constraining, but I got a good start on my music programming language.
Meanwhile my guitar playing was being left behind - I think I like
    keyboards better.

    Then suddenly MIDI appeared!

Bought a Macintosh, Roland Alpha Juno 1, and Casio CZ 101, and ...
spent a year learning how to program the Mac. (Didn't want to bias
myself by using existing commercial software.) Then spent another year
fooling around trying to get back on track with my dream of composing,
and finally really started some composition. Got two Roland MT 32
modules (they're great!) and that has been enough for me so far.

Some of my more recent compositions are polished enough that I've let
some of my friends listen to them - I guess they liked them - nobody
said "Ugghhh!" - and I've been asked what I want to do with my music? I
don't know. It's really more of a hobby and for the sheer joy of the
doing. But maybe I could take it further - but to what? I dunno.

I've barely begun to try editing patches - I've been mainly using the
    factory sounds so far.

I didn't mention my TEAC 4 track reel-to-reel, or my Fender Bandmaster
amp. I've got a Wurlitzer Electronic Piano - but hey, no MIDI, no use
it anymore! Embarassed to mention my cheap stereo amp and speakers, so
I won't. The mixer I have is worse.

I've got probably 30 hours of songs I've written in various recorded
forms: paper, audio tape, floppies. I have no idea if any of it is
good, but I've had lots of fun doin' it.

I've been reading this conference regularly for more than a year;
now I can finally announce that last week a midi bug crawled through
my credit card and landed in my brain.

I just bought an Ensoniq VFX and a midi interface for my Amiga.
No real sequencer yet, but I'm having lots of fun with the demo
version of Bars and Pipes. The four internal voices of the Amiga
were fun, but this is amazing!

I've played lots of instruments over the years, most succesfully
the guitar, but I really like playing keyboard, and have played
piano more than the guitar for the last five years. I'm primarily
interested in home playing and recording.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for introducing me to a hobby
that has already provided me with many hours of enjoyment. Since I
came here for the first time in November, my set-up has moved from a lousy
Yamaha PSS-570, Peavey bass, and a Yamaha 4-track to:

Without the help of the noters in this conference, who knows what kind
of junk I would have bought, or what kind of prices I would have paid.
Because of COMMUSIC, I was able to set up a low cost MIDI studio that
really does everything I want it to. Of course, a little more
polyphony, and aftertouch would be nice...and a sampler... 8^) This

Hi, guess I should have checked in with you guys a while ago. I'm
the person responsible for the creation and implementation of that
(now) famous LANworks Network (NAS) music Demo that a number of
you have seen at DECworld '90 and maybe at PC EXPO last June. I
have a studio down on Cape Cod where I have specialized in original
music scores for motion picture soundtracks, radio and direct mail
clients and most recently the project that I gained some major DEC
funding for which is currently being adapted for a number of public
events over the next year or so.

Some of the frequently used pieces of gear in the studio inlcude:

Roland: S-50, D-50, U220, TR505 (mostly used for MIDI remote ctlr),
    DEP-5
    KORG: EX8000, P3
The studio is tied to a Local Area Network (LAN with DEC LANworks
network software) where I use a MACIIcx running Performer, Finale
    tied to a VAXstation 3100 M38 server/workstation and a DECstation
320 PC running Cakewalk as a performance playback machine. I also
utilize a Roland MC500 for quick sequencing convenience. A Tascam
mixing board feeds audio to a 2KW quad amplified (per channel)
studio reference audio system which drives a pair of ISS monitor
speaker arrays. This arrangment serves as the development environment
for the DEC demos and sequences that I've developped for the shows.
See note 2409 for more on what we're doing. Tom Robert from our
tech support group has already provided a fair amount of detail
on the layout for the DEC events. Hope I get to meet many of you
    in the future!

    Y'know, I don't believe I've introduced myself here either.
(if I have, it's outdated so I'll delete it ;-)

I currently work in Purchasing (hold your tongue...). For the past 4
years (just about), I've played in a contemporary Christian band called
SELAH. We've put out two independent albums (local distribution) and
had one of our songs picked up by a national label. Whoever made the
comment about Michael Jackson getting all the royalties was right ;-)

Anyway, we're taking next year off due to a couple marriages so I'm
looking forward to studying a bit more, and hopefully, picking up some
    more MIDI toys...er....equipment.

I am here to learn whatever I possibly can and y'all seem to be a
    wealth of information!

Currently, I have only one SGU (a Roland MKS-20) and a Yamaha KX88
controller. I know nothing about how things sound the way they do, I
only know that it's scary to listen to a Kurzweil or a U220 and hear
something that incredibly close to a grand piano.

Well, life is pretty fun, music is great - you gotta love the MIDI gear
    and it's capabilities...

    Enjoy,

I've heard SELAH play - as the warm-up band for some guy whose name I
don't remember. Good music. Also a good excuse for me to check in
here.

I can't play a keyboard, but I read music, and use an Atari-ST "Stacy"
laptop with a Roland D5 to sequence hymns at my church. I key the
music in lock-step, and then use the graphical controller featres of
Dr. T's Tiger Cub to give it some "feel", and then let it loose for the
congregation to sing along with it. (It used to be just me and the
computer up there leading the songs, but now we have two guitars and
three more voices, so sometimes the Stacy/D5 combination doesn't play at
all anymore.)

I've been eavesdropping this file for a while, occasionally making
comments about the Atari ST. I'm also a local Atari user group
president (NaVAUS). I think you should all use Atari ST's for your
sequencers, but I'm biased.

I'm Paul Schilling, currently in Neuchatel, Switzerland as a six-month temp.
What started me out into commusic was when I listened to the Clockwork Orange
soundtrack by Wendy Carlos on my Dad's stereo. Since then ('79, around then)
I've been uncontrollably attracted by everything that has keyboard and knobs
and doesn't look like a 'home organ'. But it's changed- there is *so* much
stuff out there these days and synths have become so commonplace, that it's
lost some of the magic...but plenty left. At home, (Madison, Wisconsin) my
beloved gear is waiting for me:

Yamaha DX7
A home built modular using CEM Music chips (can't wait to get Midi-to CV)
Casio SK-1 (Don't laugh, it's very useful!)
Alessis MMT-8 Sequencer
Alessis Microverb
Fostex X-30 4-track

I'm looking to get an Alessis HR-16 and a rack mount Ensonique Mirage next.
I love to read up on the newest gear and useful tips and experiences of like-
minded people and have been following Polyphony magazine from it's early stages
to now ('Electronic Musician'), excited about every issue. Again, the
magic is less and I find I have to skip over a lot that is of no interest to me.
I find it more difficult these days to come up with really original
imaginative sounds and music with so many preset paches and synth music already
around. When I look at a machine, I look for the basic design. I hope that
sound production by digital means will prove to be expanding rather than
limiting.
Hope to make contact with a lot of you,

Paul

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took four years of popular piano, learned a bunch of chords and

progressions and even learned a bunch of songs, studied Clarenet for a

couple of years and taught myself to play guitar.

We formed a band. We could only play in C because the rhythm guitar

player only knew six chords (obviously in C). However, we wrote

original music, actually just some riffs we played forward then

backward and then from the middle out in both directions, and then

played our audience keeping with a riff until they got bored and then

a change. This was early sixties and it worked with an audience as

unsophisticated as ourselves. With the energy of doing something

together really made it a lot of fun.

But I still didn't know how to listen to music. I don't know how to

get out of the way of the tunes in my head. I think the way for me to

proceed is to start very slowly (at TiChi speed). Finally after much

repetition the mechanics become second nature when this happens I am

free to think about the sounds I want to hear and my fingers will know

what to do. When the mechanics are fully integrated into your being

the action is a fluid as thought. I have very Zen like attitude about

this. Zen master's say of Zen Archery "The bow, it shoots".

There are two violinists I admire Issac Stern and Itsak Pearlman. An

acquaintance of mine (plays 1st violin for a Symphony Orchestra) said

sometimes his instrument "gets in his way". The violin never seems to

be in Stern's or Pearlman's way. Stern is a very strong man and I

swear I can hear him bend the violin to suit his needs. Mr Pearlman

is partially disabled (and not the bull of a man Stern is) but the

violin never seems to get in his way, the violin 'it' plays. Clearly

there are many ways to get what you want.

These two have shown me how important it is to be in step with my own

style and how independant of a single approach music can be. I am

still uncomfortable with my style I haven't learned to listen and I am

at the point where I am willing to practice until my instrument 'it'

plays. Today I am trying to get the tunes in my head out where I can

hear them. For me this means that I find recording the background and

playing it back while trying to play the melody is very instructive.

I was shocked to find that I was incredibly clunky the melody and the

base were lock stepped. I was like trying to move on stage and not

walk with the beat of the music. You look like a puppet when this

happens (beat-step, beat-step,. . .).

In the final analysis it is all noise until it hits a responsive chord

in the ear of the listener. Isn't this what we are all trying to do

create that responsive chord and it wont be there for others until its

there for us.

3.97Another piano man...TLE::TLET8::ASHFORTHMon Dec 17 1990 12:2324
Hi- I too started off on the old 88. I dithered for a while before diving in,
and considered the Casio consumer line (then the tops was the CT-640) before
buying my Kawai K1-II. The thing which really was the deciding factor for me
was velocity-sensitivity, and the Kawai was the lowest-priced beast around with
it. The Casio sounds are real nice, by the way.

Another aspect of a "real synth" which the Casio series lacks is the ability to
create new sounds from fundamental waveforms and sampled sounds. I believe the
CT-670 has at least a little ability to modify its presets, doesn't it?

At any rate, I'd suggest at least trying out a velocity-sensitive keyboard.
Although the feel is not the same as a piano's, you'll really appreciate being
able to make use of your "touch" again.

If you have a computer at home, I'd also advise you to get a sequencer, or at
least try a demo version if you can. I don;t know what your needs/wants are,
but you owe it to yourself to see what you can get out of one. A good mag to
read, by the way, is Electronic Musician; it's really the best magazine I've
ever seen for any topic whatsoever, and pretty inexpensive. They address both
professionals and novices with a fine sense of balance.

Good luck-

I've played acoustic guitar off-and-on since high school, and
bass since college. My interests have varied over the
years, included a folk finger-picking phase, but these
days I'm focussing on rock (particularly "alternative"
rock, whatever that's supposed to mean) and mainly playing
bass. No real band experience, mostly playing along
with records. Just the last few months I've been taking
my music more seriously, taking bass lessons, practicing
regularly, doing a bit of songwriting, etc. I also play
	keyboards a bit.

	What I want:

In recent months my wife and I started playing semi-regularly with
a drummer and electric guitarist. We've been having trouble
getting together with them recently, but those few sessions
were an important lesson - there's no substitute in terms
of learning (or fun) for playing with real people. So, I'm
looking for folks to play with on a regular basis, say
Wednesday and/or Friday nights. I'm less interesting in
jamming (pick four chords and improvise over them for an
hour:-) than in learning to play real songs and play them
	well.

Specific interests: random selection include the Cure,
REM, Talking Heads, the Police, the Clash, Joe Jackson,
some more "classic" stuff like the Who, Allman Brothers,
etc. But I'm willing to play most any kind of rock or pop.

	Where I am:

I live in Pepperell, MA (near Nashua), and am willing to
	travel in the Fitchburg/Lowell/Manchester triangle.

	Who you are:

Drummer and guitarist or keyboardist (and maybe others)
looking for a bass player to play with/enjoy music with.
I wouldn't mind working some with just a drummer, actually -
I need to work on being part of a rhythm section and
not playing so much like a guitarist. I'm not interested
in playing with druggies, or anyone who thinks drinking is
an essential part of the musical experience (just people
for whom the music itself is enough of a "high").

If you're interested, send me mail at KOALA::RYAN.

	Mike

P.S. The above I posted in GUITAR the other day - more
	COMMUSIC-specific information - I was hot to buy a
new bass, particularly having tried out some Ibanez's.
But right now I'm more interested in songwriting, so I'd
like to build a home studio. So, my next step will be
some decent recording/mixing equipment. My wife wants
to buy a good keyboard (only so much you can do with
a Casio MT-30 and an old Wurlitzer electric piano:-), and
drum-machine/sequencing type equipment would also be
nice. So this conference is a major learning experience,
seeing as I know very little of the equipment and
	technology.
3.99Hello from 3rd shiftDELNI::JDAVISTue Jan 08 1991 04:4421

Hi, I'm Jasper 'jd' Davis and I've been reading this notesfile
for a while though sometimes the technical talk can be over my
head, I follow because of my interest in music. A few months
back I brought a used CASIO keyboard and I don't recall the model
right now, but that's part of my inexperience. I've been teaching
myself chords, fingering, and the likes about playing the keyboard.
My biggest problem is concentration, I can be sitting down in
front of my keyboard going through the lesson in my book, but
my thoughts usually turn to other things, and in disgust I call
it quits and wait unit another day (so, you veteran players how
did you come this concentration block?). After reading this notes-
file for a while, I figured I would upgrade my keyboard to something
that had MIDI and touch sensitivity, but my desire is to learn the
piano, so I'll be in the market soon for an affordable upright, and
after hearing the pros and the cons, it has help me decide this is
what I want to do. But in the meantime, I'll be banging away at my
	CASIO and reading this notesfile.

Hello everyone, I am a bright new "Music Noter"
    Name : EMONIN-MONMEGE
    Surname : Brigitte
Location : Geneva - Switzerland - Training Center
    Nationality : French
    MTS : @TXA
    TEL. : 41.22/793 68 98 (No DTN Yet unfortunately !)

As I am new, I don't really know very well, how to start, and where to
insert my question, I mean in which topic.
I guess, someone will be able to help me.
The most appropriate topic seems to be "Software" related to Music.

Here is my 1st question :

Who could help me find out the reference of a software to write,
copy and print music (classic, military, and other miscellaneous ...)
I have been told that such a software exists in France which is
recognized and approved by "La SACEM" = Societe des Auteurs et
    Compositeurs de Musique.
In other words, once you printed your music, you can send it straight
to La Sacem, who registers it, publishs it etc....

Thank you to anyone who could send me a usefull information on this
subject, if this is the wrong place to insert such a topic, please
let me know how to process.

    Thank you very much and
kind regards to all "Computer Musicians"

    Brigitte

You see.... I told you I was totally new in this MUsic Notes
    business....
I forgot the most important in the previous message 3.100 (!?)

THe software I am looking for should be able to operate on a
DEC 220..... for the rest of the question, pls get back to previous
    one as already stated above.

    Thank you for your understanding

Hello, my name is Byron Boldt and I am a temporary tech in Albuquerque.
I am a guitarist who is not much of a keyboard player. Right now I
have a Kawai K1r and a Casio horn which I trigger it with. I also have
an IBM PC which I am thinking of using as a sequencer. However, I am
not sure if I want to go that route and by a midi keyboard or just save
up for a workstation. I hope to get a lot of ideas from this
    conference.

Well, I've been reading this file for about two years now, and thought it was
about time to say "howdy". Alan Starr checking in - I'm been at DEC about
three years now, as a Software Engineer. Before that, I used to work in the
music industry doing different stuff (promotions at CBS, merchandising at WEA,
retail management, roadie for various bands, etc.).

Im basically a guitarist and singer and (maybe most importantly) an fledgling
lyricist/songwriter. In the past couple months I've dived head first into
MIDI, in search of of a means to make half-decent home demos.

This conference, and its members, has provided me with a wealth of information
and advice! My thanks to all involved, and I hope to also contribute as time
goes on.

Back into MIDI. The "studio" consists of a MC50 and a D70. That's
it. The D70's name is "Beast" after a family pet. I am into
soundtracking (and who isn't?). Maybe someday. Supposedly some of the
stuff I did a few years ago will be on a Digital internal training
tape. I've got no chops, but have been into composition for about 15
or 20 years. Played trombone in bands and orchestras. Got tired of
playing a monophonic acoustic instrument even though it had great pitch
bend, velocity, aftertouch and release velocity sensitivity. It also
had a spit valve which I don't miss. I've written stuff that was to
have been used for a college production soundtrack, but they had their
$30K of equipment stolen and it was uninsured. They loved the music
and I was hooked on soundtracking. Probably my claim to fame is that I
work music out in my head before I go to the keyboard. It is usually based
on intonations that I hear in speech, sounds and patterns I hear in
nature and interesting rhythms. I often don't listen to "real" music,
preferring to hear the hooks in my head. Usually I jam in silence.
    But, hey, who doesn't?

Guitars: 1971 Guild D-25 Acoustic (with Rosewood finish)
	     Yamaha Semi-Acoustic (bought second-hand)

I love my Guild so much I rarely ever play the Yamaha!
I'm pretty much a jazz snob, but I enjoy some other types of
    music as well.

I wanted to play the guitar ever since I learned what one was.
But my mother insisted that I take piano lessons first. So I
took piano lessons for a year and then took guitar lessons for
the next 10 years. Of course, now I'm really glad I had the
early piano training. Not that I'm a real pianist, but I'm good
    enough to enjoy myself.

Got the EPS two years ago so I could do sequencing to generate
my own electronic rhythm section. Just got the Mac a few months
ago and am starting to get into MIDI. It's great! The software
generates a lot better piano, bass and drum parts than I can!

Goals: Learn how to improvise better. Learn how to play the
saxophone. (Currently learning the clarinet. My wife says if I
get good at it then she'll buy me a saxophone.) Learn how to
write/arrange for a 20-piece big band. Maybe learn how to be a
    real piano player... nah!

So YAMAHA is major VAX user(VAX9000,VAX8800) in japan.

	Equipment:

        YAMAHA QY10
	Fender Stratcaster '60s,'73s
        TEAC MIXER 6ch
	YAMAHA DELAY
        Mac SE

YAMAHA QY10 is nice for people who can't play keyboads.

I am a novice with several years of piano lessons a looooong time ago
but sing and read music. I just bought a Yamaha PSR500 due primarily
to the great review in this notesfile. I bought it at Service
Merchandise on the last day of their sale (12/31/91) which I found
out about from this conference too. So Thanks!

I will be connecting the PSR500 up to my PC soon but I want to
improve my skills and learn more about the keyboard before I get too
involved in the PC and MIDI aspects.

I hope to be able to get good enough to accompany my wife on her guitar...

In March I will be relocating to Valbonne, France :-) for a three
year assignment. Yes - I'm psyched!

    Hi there !

I'm Paul Richards, based at Basingstoke in the UK.

    My current set-up is :

YAMAHA SY-77 keyboard (from the extreme...
CASIO CZ101 keyboard ...to the ridiculous !)
    AKAI S950 sampler
    SIMMONS electronic drum kit
    YAMAHA DTS70 trigger unit
    ARIA PRO bass
    YAMAHA QX21 old 2-track sequencer
    FOSTEX 280 four-track recorder
a few other bits and pieces...

I'm contemplating getting a PC for both sequencing and
sample-editing, so I'm looking forward to reading of other people's
    experiences with CUBASE/NOTATOR/etc...

    	Paul.
