142.112Finale Reference/Guide Book ?TKOVOA::OTSUKA_YYuichiro.Ohtsuka@tko.dec.com Mon May 12 1997 01:4910
Hello,

Is there any Finale reference or guide book available, beside
that thick manual comes along within the package ?

Book title, author, publisher, and ISBN et cetra infos are
deeply appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Nok (Tokyo/Japan)

I have not seen one, and I think if there was one there'd be a good
    chance I'd have seen it.

I'm surprised because I have seen "3rd party manuals" for all of the
major sequencers but not the notation programs, and I've heard that
Finale is VERY hard to learn.

Finale is the "standard" and most publishing companies will accept ONLY
Finale format files, but I elected to go with Passport Design's Encore
because it was much cheaper and had the opposite reputation (extremely
easy to use, which has been my experience).

I agree in hundred percent that Finale is VERY (in uppercase!) difficult
to learn. Its "unique" interface (not Mac-like, nor Win-like) is making
the matter worse, I think.

Once I tried to use Encore, but I decided to choose Finale, and that was
halfly correct for my DTP usage, but not satisfactory for my music works.
I should have selected Encore or Engraver... (Not sure Engraver is still
available these days, though.) I once used Mark of the Unicorn's new
notation program (former name was Notation Composer,or something like that..)
and that was okay, but I don't hear much about the "good or bad" review on
this software (Not much users?) .

Anyway, I am still waiting for informations.

Thank you,
Nok (Tokyo/Japan)

My wife just picked up Finale V3.7.2 for doing her UNH college
works on, and yes, we both sit there going through the books.... our
edition has a total of "5" manuals, with the best reference being the
"encyclopedia" or the tutorial.... also now with V3.7.2 is a "Read Me
First" Book! This book has all the changes made in this new edition
that the older editions do not have..... We also have Cakewalk V5.0
Home Studio which is okay, but not for the degree of work my wife is
    doing in college.

For a reference book, Finale has a notes forum that you may want to
ask for references, etc... this forum has answered many questions for
    me! Try it at:

Good luck & read, read, read the books!

I don't think Finale is *that* hard to learn. When I was first
learning it, I called the support line quite a few times. But then on
one call, the support guy asked if I had done the tutorials. I hadn't,
and he suggested that if I did, I would probably find most of my
questions being answered in the process; he was right.

There are some things they could do to make it faster for me to
use. The version I have is totally committed to the task of removing
courtesy accidentals I've put in when it updates almost anything else.
Since most of the music I notate is 12-tone or at least uses something
approaching total pitch variety, this is a serious pain in the neck for
me. I also haven't plumbed the mystery of what the relationship might
be between the numbers you use to set size and shape defaults for ties
and the numbers you use to fix them after the fact, so I spend a lot of
    time fixing ties.

    Paul
