471.0. "British Colombia!!" by IOSG::JOHNSONR (Richard Johnson) Tue Jul 16 1991 14:45

    Hi,

    	I am a British/Canadian working in Reading, England. I need some
    contacts in B.C. I know there are loads and loads of peeps out there
    but is anybody listening? I was recently in Vancouver, well Richmond to
    be exact for a vacation. I was lucky and caught two weeks of that good
    weather you had June/July.

    	Has anybody got contacts at U.B.C. or are you at U.B.C ?

    	I plan on living over there after I graduate, so I'd like to hear
    just how wonderful life is out there - from the horses mouth as it
    were.

    	Is there a Digital set-up in Vancouver ? If so what do you do ?

    			Signing off,,

    				Anu.

471.2Some info...VAOU02::BOTMANPieter Botman - Vancouver SWSWed Jul 17 1991 02:5415
    I'll try to answer some of your questions. Being more specific
    might help.

    No we are not @ UBC. If you want names of professors or staff at UBC,
    you could try ric VAOU02::LAM, he does some support work there, and
    the sales rep for UBC is Richard Harris @ VAO. UBC is on the internet
    so you can e-mail them directly yourself. By the way Vancouver also
    has Simon Fraser University (which is actually located in Burnaby).

    I won't attempt to summarize life in Vancouver. Suffice it to say
    that people here do **not** hunger to move to eastern Canada. What's
    in the DEC office? Normal western canadian sales office, combined
    sales, ops, and dis staff of around 100. We had good numbers in FY91.

471.4Info on BC ferriesKAOFS::R_DAVEYRobin Davey CSC/CTH dtn 772-7220Tue Jul 11 1995 00:1312
    I'm going to be driving from Calgary to Smithers, BC this summer
    and was told it would be really worth the extra time to drive to
    the Island and then take the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert.

    I've been all over the WWW looking for info on the BC ferries and
    can't find anything. Is there someone in VAO or VCO that could
    provide me with some info.

    Thanks,

    Robin Davey
471.5Did It - Was Great!KAOFS::LOCKYERTue Jul 11 1995 16:1313
    Robin, I took the ferry from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy many years
    ago. If memory serves, it's a 20 hour trip and is not cheap. You pay
    for you vehicle and each person and you'll probably want a stateroom as
    well, or else you have to sleep sitting up! It's a super trip though!!

    I suggest you call Information in BC - I bet BC Ferries has an 800
    number and will send you all the info you need. Of course, you should
    be able to get the same stuff from a travel agency.

    Also, this ferry us very popular, so you should make reservations soon.

    And finally, if you do go to Vancouver Island and have the time,
    consider a trip to Pacific Rim National Park.

    Didn't find a WWW page. They don't have an 800 number use

    	(604) 669 1211

    The Port Hardy run is busy in summer and bookings are recommended.

    Have fun...

    I've been there many times, some of the best summer vacations we've

    Check out http://vvv.com:80/ferries/ for B.C. ferry schedules (and please
    note that the vvv in the above line is not a misprint).

    re: .8 and .9

    Thanks, I had already been to the BC Tourism page but when I checked
    the ferry link was not there. I just went back to check again and
    there is now an entry with a NEW sticker on it. Maybe my use of the
    comment form on the BC Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture
    page is why it has been added.
