I don't know why they should complain, I mean after all they do call it
the *WORLD* series. This is the first time the rest of the world has
    been represented.

Does this mean the whole world (minus USA) should be cheering for the
    JAYS ?

Actually the "World" in World Series refers to The New York World
newspaper which sponsored the series for the first few years.

Sorry to take this note to be serious discussion, but have any of you
read the book 'THE LAST CANADIAN'? I forget who wrote it but it was
about Imperial Oil doing a leveraged buyout of Exxon so that they could
lower oil prices along the Quebec-Windsor corridor (for some reason).
In any case, the yanks invade by sending a slew of c-130 Hercules to
our major airports with the idea of doing some sort of coup. We
respond by blowing up one or two of them on the runway and scare the
rest of them off. I suppose the imputous (sp?) for them invading was
control over their natural resources; oil.

In real life, I wouldn't be all that suprised if they
invade/annex//whatever once their oil or more importantly, water,
starts running out. Fortunately, they are very intraspective and don't
really know we're here (hence the upside down flag at the World
Series). You can also bet that the UN report showing Canada as the
best, didn't get much airplay down south.

BTW, the book may not have been called the Last Canadian, but something
along the lines of 'Imperium', and was written by a Canadian who has
written other Canadian Books (no, not Pierre Berton) and was at one
point involved with the Cdn. Military.

The book you refer to is called, "Exxoneration" the authour is Richard
Rohmer, his was (or is) a General in the Canadian Reserves. This book
is a good 15 years old (I read it in high school) and is a sequel to
    "Ultimatum"

Much more current and interesting is the recent book by a RMC military
historian which claims that there are plans to invade Canada in place
(he cites as evidence an US base of some sort in upstate NY that
doesn't make sense for any other purpose).

Jean,

Don't worry about the Americans crossing into Quebec! I'll leave the rest
up to your imagination.

Don,

Last I heard, if Quebec was to separate, the Americans would be the 1st ones
making a move into the new country. The purpose would be to setup an
embassy there...

Yeah, that's what the US usually does with third-world economies just
    before they tap 'em dry...

Mario, the thought of Quebec becoming another of the US's toy bananna
republics is just as repulsive to me as it must be to you. If that's
what separation has to offer the Quebecois, then they should be very
careful what they ask for... 'cause they just might get it.

Regarding the US plan to invade Canada that was mentioned in an earlier
reply. I have heard the same thing....can't remember the source, but
apparently the plan was in place and was being strongly considered just
before WWII started. Once WWII started though the US decided it
wouldn't be looked upon favourablyby the international community.

624.18First the world series, next the superbowlTROOA::SOLEYGlobal Village IdiotThu Oct 22 1992 17:599
There have, been various not-so-secret plans to invade
or annex all or part of British North America/Canada, we all know it was
actually tried in 1812. One of these campaigns even had a still well
known slogan "54:40 or fight" the 40 was the 40th parallel (as opposed
to the 38th) don't remember what the 54 meant.

I've also heard that Quebec once tried to invade one of the New England
states, but I'm not sure if this is real or just a good bit of
    folklore.
624.1954 40 means "grab best part of Canada"VAOU09::BOTMANpieterThu Oct 22 1992 21:2610
I believe "54 40 or fight" refers to boundaries the americans felt they
"deserved", or wanted to obtain. Something about "manifest destiny",
and all that. 54 would be 54 degrees north latitude. Have your atlas
ready? Think anything north of 54 would have been of interest to the
americans in the early 1800's? NOT! (Hint: no large oil industry at that
    time).

624.22Those that forget history...KAOFS::LOCKYERFri Oct 23 1992 17:3412
Why do Quebecers conveniently forget that the Quebec provincial government
(Robert Bourassa) ASKED the federal government (Pierre Trudeau) to invoke
the War Measures Act to resolve a Quebec, just as the Quebec provincial
government (Robert Bourassa) ASKED the federal government (Brian Mulroney)
to resolve a provincial problem at Oka?

Who can spot the similarities in the above?

    Regards,

    Garry

Re: similatities.

Here's one.

In both cases criminals were involved, the FLQ and the Mohawks.

What similarity were you referring to Garry?

Don't bother mentioning it, I know what it is.

/Mario
624.25Looks like a Quebec (ie. NOT Canadian) problem to me!KAOFS::LOCKYERFri Oct 23 1992 22:1211
Both situations were local to Quebec that it couldn't control without
    outside help.

In both cases Robert Bourassa made the call for help.

    Both PMs were from Quebec.

So one has to ask, why do some Quebecers think Canada did something
terrible by responding to a request for hel from Quebec?

    Garry
624.26KAOFS::J_DESROSIERSLets procrastinate....tomorrowWed Oct 28 1992 16:0113
Do you think the situation "could" have been handled in such a way as
to make federal involvement MANDATORY? In this light then the federal
governement and it's institutions are seen in a positive light by the
    population.

Don't forget, in the Oka "war", Robert Bourassa and his governement
made the mess and then called out the feds to help.

I for one don't beleive we need an army (except of course if they are
used to dig the GRAND CANAL)

    Jean
