100.0. "Figure Skating" by VAXUUM::DEVRIES (MD: VAX DOCUMENT Device Doctor) Fri Aug 12 1988 14:37

Are there any fans of Figure Skating (aka Artistic Skating) in this
conference? Canada certainly contributes a lot of fine skaters
to the Olympic and World competitions. Let's discuss the sport,
the facilities, and the personalities here.

100.1Any skating sights in/near Ontario?VAXUUM::DEVRIESMD: VAX DOCUMENT Device DoctorFri Aug 12 1988 14:4917
I'll be traveling in Ontario with my family soon (late August), and
we'd like to know if there are any skating-related sites, displays,
etc., for a tourist to gawk at.

The Canadian Figure Skating Association has an address in Vanier,
which I'm told is near Ottawa. Do they have any kind of display,
museum, or other collection of memorabilia open to the public?

This is pure groupie stuff: We'd like to drive through Orillia,
Brian Orser's home town. Is it possible to drive by his home?
Is it worth the trouble (to a skating nut?).

Is there anything else related to figure skating that we might want
to see between Montreal and Toronto?

    Thanks,
    Mark

If you're coming to Ottawa, visit the Gloucester Skating Club.
You might be able to get a glimpse of Elizabeth Manly, if she's
    in town.

100.3a little we found out about Brian and ElizabethVAXUUM::DEVRIESMD: VAX DOCUMENT Device DoctorFri Aug 26 1988 16:2316
We just got back from our whirlwind tour of south Ontario (and
Montreal), and picked up a little information about Canadian skaters.

Elizabeth Manley has signed a three-year contract with Ice Capades.
We look forward to seeing her as she travels through New England.
(No, we didn't stop at the Gloucester Skating Club, so I can't report
    what's going on there.)

Brian Orser, we're told, lives in Penetanguishene, north of Orillia,
and now trains in Barrie. He had previously trained in Orillia
because his amateur coach, Don Leigh, lives there. The rink where
he trained has been renamed Brian Orser Arena, just so no one will
forget where he trained. (Orillia is about 100 km north of Toronto,
    and it's a beautiful place.)
