460.0. "Vacation in Montreal" by MSBCS::KING (VSS BXB/LTN System Management Group DTN:293-5677) Mon Jun 17 1991 18:24

Hi,

I'm thinking of taking a little vacation in Montreal. I've never been
there and need some info. Is there a number I can call for tourist information?
(i.e. things to do in Monrteal) What is the current exchange rate of American
$$ to Canadian $$? Is it best to change the money in Canada or in the U.S.
before leaving?

What is the public transportation system like there? I'm going by bus
and assume the bus depot is near a subway station or something like that.

Thanks,

Bryan

The subway system is quite good. Look for the signs that say "METRO" with an
arrow pointing downwards. The bus? I'm not sure, I've never taken the bus
in Montreal. I'm pretty sure there is a Metro station very near the bus
station which is almost downtown.

I'm afraid I don't have a phone # for tourist info, but here are some things
to do in Montreal:

o Expos ball game at the Olympic stadium

o Water slides and amusement park on St-Helene Island (the water
slides are supposed to be among the best in the world). I've been
a couple of times and enjoyed it. You can easily get to St-Helene
	  Island by Metro.

	o Visit the old Montreal.

o Good restaurants where you can bring your own wine on Prince-Arthur
	  street.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply. I got a call today from a very
nice lady in the Mill with lots of Montreal info.

Also I have a Quebec Tourist Info number in Boston
              (617)723-3366.

The Canada Tourist Info number in Boston is
              (617)523-1731.

Yes, the main bus station is directly above the Berri de Montigny
    metro station.

Don't forget the old port, Jacques Cartier Square, they are in the
    old montreal district.

Also, McGill University, Univ of Montreal, Mount Royal (complete
with huge cross, nice park, lake, carriage rides, etc), St Joseph's
oratory, Jazz clubs (le soleil levant), clubs featuring sing-alongs
of french pop and folk songs on rue St. Denis (called boites a chanson)
pop/rock clubs (club soda, le spectrum). How about a tour of the
olympic facilities (also on the metro line), and a dip in the olympic
pool? Explore Ile Ste Helene, also on the metro, former expo site, now
a park, with old fort, rowing basin, a picturesque island in the middle
of the St. Lawrence. Also at the far end of Ile St. Helene is an
amusement park from the expo days, called La Ronde. Fun!

Food: Try Dunn's for cheesecake, Schwartz' deli for montreal smoked
meat, and Fairmont bagel bakery for incredible, authentic bagels.

    Bon voyage

Berri de Montigny is now known as Berri-UQAM on most maps.

(UQAM = Univerity of Quebec at Montreal.)

460.6Schwart's deliKAOFS::M_MORINFri Jun 21 1991 11:2110
BTW.

Schwart's deli is on St. Laurent st. which is near and parallel to St. Denis st.

Don't miss it. On the way there, take the Prince Arthur st. route.

The smoked meat is worth it.

460.8Latin Quarter info?JUMP4::JOYHappy at lastTue Mar 24 1992 15:159
I will be staying at a B&B in the Latin Quarter of Montreal over Easter
weekend. I was wondering if there are specific things to do/see in the
Latin Quarter, how far is it to Vieux Montreal, is it a safe area for
strolling, etc. I don't have the actual address of the B&B yet, just
know its in the Latin Quarter.

    Thanks

The B&B is on Laval St., across from St. Louis Square. Is this near a
    Metro station?

    Thanks
