848.0. "Cheap airfares to London?" by LARVAE::TILSON_V () Tue Aug 02 1994 12:30

I have an aunt who live in St Catherines and has just returned from
visiting my familiy in the U.K.
Now she is determined to pay a second visit. Can anyone tell me if
any airline/operators still selling "standby" tickets - or any other good
value/cheapies that may be on regular offer.
I have tried British Airways/Air Canada/Canadian Airlines all of which
stated standby's nolonger exist. Any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any info.
    Vic Tilson.

There are a few things to do, there are cheaper fares for booking 21 days
in advance with a minimum stay. I recently looked up some fares from YYZ
to FRA and the advanced fare was over $1000 cheaper than full fare.

There are companies called consolidators that can sometimes get cheap
fares at the last minute, like the Last Minute Club, friend used to use
them for last minute London show tour trips, but that was a while ago.

There are a number of "discount" travel agents around Toronto who will sell
tickets at approx. 5% - 10% discount, even from the charter operators, and
can often get charter seats at a few days notice. Air Transat and Canada 2000
fly charters to London ... I've heard good things about Canada 2000 service
although I've never flown with them. Marlin Travel in Ottawa do some
consolidation through their tour division, and a few years ago were selling
flights on KLM well discounted (even below the ticketed price).

There are lots of opportunities ... it just takes some phoning around ...
Local travel agents (like those in St Kitts) just won't get you the deals.

Thanks for the replies. All useful info.

My aunt flew Canada 3000 last time and was VERY impressed. I'll pass on
Marlin Travel to her to call as well. Once again thanks for your
    assistance.
I'll keep an eye on this note, in case anyone else can suggest Agents
    etc......

    Cheerio for now.
