My daughter and I will be going to Prince Edward Island
@ the end of the month for a 2 week vacation.

Any recommendationon things to do? We will be staying
@ the Twin Shores campground near Darnley.

Also any tips about the island or travel to and from would be greatly
appreciated. We will be coming from Monpelier VT.

                         Regards,

    Dear 469.0

PEI is a good choice for a vacation. Nice spots to visit, St. Peters
Bay area north and east of Charlottetown on the north shore(highway
    2. Just before Morell, there are beautiful, almost deserted beaches
along the north coast. This area is off the beaten path and not
well known by many tourists). Another area, Murray Harbour has an
interesting seal watching area(south east corner of
the island). Very quaint village with lots of B&B's and craft shops.
East Point Lighthouse on the most easterly tip of the island. Nice
views, and on a clear day, you can see Nova Scotia.

Other areas, Stanhope(north shore) deep sea cod fishing - fun for
the kids. There is a nice golf course at Stanhope, lots of beaches
and an interesting restaurant at Rustico called Watts Restaurant.
Great food at the end of a working fishing pier.

Be sure to take in a lobster dinner at New London. Good price for
a filling meal. As well, take in Green Gables area near Cavendish.
There is also a beautiful golf course too!....if you feel the urge!

The west end of the island is rather dull. Not much to see but worth
a drive to say you have been there. Central, north and south east
    areas are picturesque.

Best travel route is US route 2 east from Montpelier then travel
I95 to Bangor, then follow Maine route 9 to Calais Maine. Cross over St
Croix River into Saint Steven New and follow NB Route 1 to
St. John then continue to Sussex NB, pick up Trans Canada Highway
#2 east to Moncton NB then to Trans Canada Highway 16 north to Cape
Tormentine NB(PEI Ferry Terminal). Gas prices in Canada are double
or more U.S. prices - cheaper to travel in the U.S.

Beware of the costs for meals, campgrounds, almost everything. Gas
in PEI is VERY expensive and there is a 7% GST(Goods and Services
Tax) on almost everything. This is in addition to any provincial
sales tax. Though U.S. residents are exempt from the GST, you pay
it up front and claim a refund. Had some friends from N.H. try to
get forms and claim refund. To date - nothing! So don't hold your
breath in anticipation of the refund.

If you have any other questions about PEI, let me know. I have
been to PEI many times and know people who live there during the
summer. My wife has also visited the island and shares my opinions.

    Hope the info helps.

    Have a safe trip.....

I vacationed with my family on P.E.I almost 15 years ago and to this
day it remains one of the best vacations I've ever had. What a nice
place! Does anyone know if the Belmore Hotel (Inn) still exists? It
was a pretty old place, but had great seafood. I think it is/was in
    Souris (sp.) - just curious,

469.3I'lles in the Gulf!JPLAIN::FRITZThu Jul 18 1991 15:4013
I was in PEI last summer and enjoyed the hospitality. I took a
side trip via ferry from Souris to I'lles de Madeleine (part of PQ)
in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. If you choose to do this, I would
suggest setting up hotel reservations well in advance. The I'lles
were beautiful and the ferry ride relaxing. To my suprise, it was
    not "touristy".

We entered PEI from Cap Tormentine/Border and toured PEI; Souris
and then down to Wood Island where we entered Nova Scotia (Pictou).
We did all this in two weeks (from NH).

We're going camping on PEI later next week ... Everything is just
    about set ... but ...

How bad are mosquitos on the Island at this time of year, in particular
along the north shore ... Cavendish area. i.e. can one sit out of
a tent without fear of ebing eaten alive ?

While I visited PEI some 25 years ago, I cannot remember ... I do
remember while living in Moncton at the time that along the Peticodiac
    they grew MONSTER mosquitos!

Unfortunately my family and I are all quite sensitive to mosquito
bites and mosquitos seem to pick us out from a crowd! The decision
then is whether to get a screen tent too!

    Cheers,

    Stuart

    Hi all ...

I, too, love PEI. My Dad and all four grandparents are from there.
As I was growing up, we'd travel there to visit with our relatives at
least every year. Can still remember my Grandmother's homemade molasses
    cookies !
Dad's from St. Louis, to be specific. It's at the northern
(western ?) tip of the island. Being one of those small [but, very
picturesque] farming villages, I doubt that many tourists frequent it.
I also have relatives in nearby Tignish. Do these places ring bells
with anyone ?? Anyone from that neighborhood ??
