1038.0. "Living in Quebec...Working in Ontario" by POLAR::WAUCAUSH (BANG!.....I'm Hit!) Tue May 27 1997 13:18

Tried looking, but nothin came up in dir/tit=hull or aylmer

I would be very interested in hearing any pro's and con's from people
who live in Aylmer/Hull and work in Ontario.

I was driving through Aylmer the other day and was amazed at how
    affordable the new houses were.
I am very excited about the prospect of owning a brand new home for a
great price so any info is appreciated.

Is there an extra tax I would have to pay for living in Aylmer but
    working in Ont.?

Are the cops that picky once my plate change over?

Are they ever going to put a bridge around the west end like they keep
    talking about?

    keith.

incredibly...it does. Especially the no tax or penalty for living
    there and working in Ont.

There have been studies comparing the cost of living in Quebec versus
the cost of living in Ontario. I remember seeing some interesting
articles on the topic in the Ottawa Citizen. You might want to go to
your local library and look back.

I know of one person who bought a house in Aylmer but moved back to
Ontario within two years because of income taxes and car insurance issues.

    Bernie.

Do you remember what the outcome of the study was?
A co-worker just told me it was generally cheaper in Aylmer and his car
insurance went from $1500 down to $600.

If you're buying a home, it's definitely cheaper to live there. If
you're renting, well, maybe a little cheaper. Income tax is not that
much different other than the fact you have to do two separate returns.

Insurance is more expensive in Ontario now, with the recent changes.
1038.6POLAR::WAUCAUSHBANG!.....I'm Hit!Tue May 27 1997 15:239
It was really cheap over there.
For a single home starting at 130 000 here in Ont. they were starting
from 99 00 over in Aylmer. And it seemed you get a bigger piece of land
than you do here in Ont, Which is perfect for the illegal dog race
track I'm gonna operate in the back yard.

If your gonna have kids they pay you to have them in
La Belle Province...not much for #1, but by the time
you have 5 (like my sister) it pays off in the thousands/kid.(2-3K$)

I knew about the kid thing.
If people can get health cards for their dogs in ontario, how hard
would it be to claim 3 cats as kids in Quebec?

    Keith,

you have to look to why the property values are so low. The
spearation issue has depressed property values across Quebec. If you
decide to buy, it is sort of a gamble... do you believe Quebec will
remain in Canada? If they do then you have made a good deal on your
house, if they don't, well I would offer you 100 shiny pennies for
your place, because no one else will want it. There has been a reason
why 600,000+ anglos have moved out of Quebec in the last 10 years.
Things I know cost more money - Car registration, Income tax, Gas
prices. As for Insurance, under the new rules in Ontario I just picked
up full coverage plus on my new (slightly used) car for 690 bucks a year
(yes I am a happy camper). Can you converse in French?

About the separation thing:

Living in Quebec, you learn to live with the talk and
it comes in one ear out the other.

About the $ thing for kids:

Doesn't exist anymore. No more cash for kids program.

Car insurance is about the same price.

Car licensing and registration is a bit more expensive in PQ.

Income tax is higher if you don't have kids.

I you have kids then you're advantaged: You can claim daycare
costs on income tax form. Gradually within the next 4 years,
daycare will become $5.00/day for all kids. How much is it in
Ontario? $125-150/week?

Gas is currently cheaper in Gatineau/Hull than in Ottawa. This
changes from month to month. Gas is more expensive further
East you go in Quebec.

Sales tax is 6.5% in Quebec, it will change to 7.5% in Jan 98.
It's 8% in Ontario.

About the house price thing:

Cheaper in Quebec is relative in my view. I get to live
in a nice house for a lot cheaper than in Ontario. Yes
it doesn't appreciate as much but then, if I want to go
into a bigger house I sell it and buy the bigger house
for cheap too. It's all relative.

All in all if you don't let the separation thing bother you then
it's no big deal living in Quebec. If you make the effort and
learn French then good for you. The more languages you know the
better. The language issue in
Gatineau/Hull is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. I have
english neighbours who are perfectly happy where they are and
converse in English everywhere they go in town.

My 2c worth...

1038.13My 2 cents..KUTIPS::ROBILLARDThu May 29 1997 17:036

It'd alot easier to let the "seperation thing" not bother you when it
hasn't happened. It might not be so easy once it does.

Sounds like Chretien and Manning having an discussion!

    keith:
Sure, the prices of housing are cheaper, the land is bigger etc..
this is all for a reason, the prices keep on dropping, why?
Because, there is no advantage of owning a property on a land
where noone is certain if they will become independent.
Uncertainty causes confusion, confusion causes disinterest.
Why invest in an item so large with the possibility if a great loss,
this is not the stock market, this is an investment of your future,
it is up to you to decide if you want to pay that little bit more,
or wondering how much your going to lose.
