1034.0. "RAS phone numbers in TRO and MQO ?" by 49197::DZIALOWSKI (We just don't get credit for it.) Sun May 04 1997 13:25

What are the RAS telephone numbers in Canada ?
At least, what are the RAS telephone numbers for Toronto and Montreal ?

If there is any major reason justifying that such numbers are not
and should not be published on the CCS web site, (as they are for most
other countries), or in this notefile, I will be satisfied if one could
    send me a discrete e-mail (dzialowski@mail.dec.com or louis@acm.org)
with the Toronto and Montreal RAS numbers.

    Thanks for any help!

1034.1RAS in Canada...KAOFS::B_CROOKBrian @KAOMon May 05 1997 16:187
RAS is being tested in Canada but is not 'officially' released yet. I
will check on the current status, until then, we use ERAS which you can
    find out about at:

    http://kerberos.tro.dec.com/index.html

    Brian, CCS, former ERAS admin.

Are the ERAS numbers available to any (Digital) RAS user in good
standing, or does it require additional registration, ID, passwords
etc. ? Is there anything that can be arranged by a simple call to the
    right individual (or do I just f!"$% *&f) ?
Thank you for any help !

BTW: it maybe a stupid question but, but RAS working fine in TROTWOCAWKI
(aka. "the rest of the world outside Canada, as we know it"), why does it
have to be tested before its implementation in Canada ?

To keep overhead costs at a level sufficient to guarantee we don't
make too much profit of course. 8^)

    re. 2

Because we're special .... we also had to live with that previous
abomination for dialup access prior to ERAS. I loved it so much I've
forgotten what it was called. ERAS is implemented on DECservers with
Kerberos. I suspect the hardware cost was alot lower than a RAS setup.
You also can do dumb terminal emulation if you wish with ERAS.

I'm not sure that anyone in this notes file can answer your question
about NTRAS in Canada. To get an official response, you should call the
CCS help desk at DTN 621-4111.

The former system was called ACB! Rest in Peace.
(lots of places still using it outside of Canada!)

For ERAS, you do need an account (in addition to a domain account), a
bit of software on the client PC, ie you don't just dial in.
    hope that helps a bit...
1034.6no client stuff required at least for W95 or NTTROOA::MSCHNEIDERmartin.schneider@tro.mts.dec.comThu May 08 1997 15:415
You need nothing special on the PC to use ERAS .... it just is another
username and password. The sales workbench notebooks come with a
script to automate the login. If you don't use it you just need to
configure the dialup connection to give you a terminal window to enter
    the username and password ....

    re:-1
whoops, right again, I was thinking of windoze 3.11 where you needed the
Trumpet software and some automated scripts, times have changed!
    thanks

I have decided that I will use a US RAS number.
    Thanks anyway for the explanations.
