1029.0. "1997 Budget" by POLAR::MAHANEY (Mikey - Deliver us from evil!) Wed Feb 19 1997 03:59

    1997 Budget (Election budget!)

    Good or bad?

My View (the Right Wing view)

I think it is just an election budget with nothing
really being done for the average Canadian citizen. No tax cuts and
nothing really to tackle the national debt. When will the Canadaian
people see a balanced budget from the Feds? The Liberals have had the
benefit of low interest rates in reducing the deficit (which they seem
to be proud of), but reality of the situation is 'hey, we just added
another 24 billion dollars to the debt this year'. Is this something
to be proud of? Mortgaging the future so Jean can get back in power to
me is a crime and should be punishable by sitting in a cell with
Lucifer Bouchard for life. Get rid of the debt and the jobs will come
(tax cuts!), the government has no right or the ability to be doing job
creation! Stop spending for job creation!!

Side note: Of the 600 billion owed to the national debt, only 60 billion
can be attribute to true capital good and services. The rest is interest
from not paying the original debt. It's like mortgaging your 200,000 house
and owing 2 million dollars. Sick! and terrible financial planning.

    Sean

P.S. Smokes and booze did not get tax increases.

Ok so let's see you want to have both a balanced budget and tax cuts.
Talk about smoke and mirrors. Yes we are still running a deficit. Yes
we are still adding to the accumulated debt. Good news is we are doing
it at slower rate and moving toward a balanced budget. You and I may
both agree that the pace at which we are going there is too slow
(perhaps if Mulroney and company had started this process in 1984 we
would have already been there ... but I digress).

What worries me is all the calls to either increase spending or reduce
taxes since the actual deficit is lower than the projected deficit.
Yikes, a deficit is still a deficit and there still is that issue of
the accumulated debt that future generations will continue to bear.

Regarding the pace of deficit reduction. We'd all like the annual
deficit to be changed to a surplus, so we can start to pay off the
accumulated debt, but you can't just yank $30+ billion worth of
government spending out of the economy and have no negative effects,
especially in times of high unemployment. So a phased process, while
    still painful allows for adjustments.

If you're going to point to the Ontario Harris government as an example
than please note that the Ontario government is also still running an
annual deficit. Alberta... yes well if we had a booming oil economy
    and little debt.

    Wilson!

    I thought you left? ????

    Re: -1

In essence the liberals have given us a tax increase. Since 1992 the
present tax tables have not change with the inflation rate. So while
the average salary has gone up, the government is taking in more tax
money. Also, I am not asking for a balance budget right now but steps
to it like the Harris government is trying to do. The Liberals could
have really hit the defecit in this budget due to the low interest rates,
by cutting some programs, and defenitely curtailing spending. As for a
moderate broad based tax decrease, it could also be phased in. The
studies have proven that high unemployment is linked to high taxes, so
reduce the taxes and get people to work so they can in turn can start
paying taxes. The child poverty tax credit is a smoke screen introduced
to just receive votes from soft hearted liberals and the unemployed.
This money could better used by giving small business people tax breaks
and let them start hiring people. When people have money in their
    pockets, they will spend it.

the budget is a very nice thing to discuss. i am enjoying what has been
written thus far. please continue, the pleasure is immense. it's too
bad that i don't know a thing about budgets, you people here have the
responsibility for teaching me everything i need to know about budgets.

    thanking you in advance

    regards,

1029.8Hey Wilson, want to smoke a big fat Notes File?POLAR::MAHANEYMikey - Deliver us from evil!Fri Feb 21 1997 02:4218

Like the drug addict, Wilson relapses, the notes file is a terrible
drug, lets make it illegal. I told you that you need professional help...

Budgets - Take your tax money, and spend it on a lot of stupid things.
A third going to interest on the debt, a third going to
needed programs, and the remainder going to interest groups
(the vote buyers). Plus the government doesn't know how to
count so it spends more than it has. That's about it. Lesson
    	      over.

I know this is boring stuff, but really there is not much chatter
in here. We could talk about the old guy in China kicking off, but
that is for the China Notes File. Wait lets talk about the radical
weather changes we have been receiving over the last few days. Boy o'
Boy, it sure has made some nasty potholes. Yawn, I'm sleepy. Goodnight.

your reference to smoke evades my understanding, please explain. you
shouldn't tell people they are like drug addicts, it is not very nice.
your budget lesson was very helpful, thanks for the time! i was only
joking, this topic is not boring, in fact it is the most exciting thing
in the whole wide warm and fuzzy world.
