981.0. "Pension Plan Changes - US & Canada?" by KAOFS::LOCKYER () Fri Feb 09 1996 14:42

From reading Digital Notes, there's major pension plan reform going on
in US Area. Does anyone know if similar reform is planned for Digital
Canada? Also in the US, Digital contributes (up to 2% of your salary,
if I remember correctly) to their SAVE program, a retirement savings
program. Anybody know if a similar program is being considered for
    Canada?

Or are our benefits in Canada (from Digitial and/or the government) so
different that changes in the US are not relevent in Canada?

    Regards,

    Garry

    I've wondered the same things.

Apparently the talk about a pension buyout has improved Digital's
    stock.

    Very interesting.

Sorry for this very late reply.

I have been complaining for YEARS about Digital Canada's pension plan.
All I want to do is get completely out of it, but I can't. I've been
told that there is general agreement that Digital Canada's plan needs
improving and we can expect something new by 1997.

Have a look at your T4 form in the "pension adjustment" box. Whatever
number is in that box represents how much less you are allowed to
    contribute to RRSPs.

EXAMPLE: A pension adjustment for someone may be $13,000. Given the
maximum you're allowed to contribute to RRSPs is $13,500, that person
could only contribute $500 to an RRSP that year. AND YET if that person
were to leave Digital, chances are, they'd only be able to transfer
less than $2,000 into a new plan. Something's definately wrong with
    that.

Our plan limits my RRSP contributions so much, and pays me so
little when (if) I retire, my only hope is to opt out....or work till
    I'm 90.
