903.0. "Ontario trip" by GRANPA::JDEMARIA () Wed Mar 08 1995 14:53

I have booked a wilderness fly-in bear hunting/fishing trip on Air
Ivanhoe for early June. Since I have never done this before I am
looking for any information I can get about a variety of subjects. Any
info or pointers would be appreciated.

    Questions:
How long a drive from Toronto to Sudbury?
Any secrets about dealing with Black Flies?
    	Any experience with Air Ivanhoe?
Things to see and do in the Sudbury area?
Firearms regulations as they pertain to hunting rifles?
Likley weather conditions in northern Ontario in early June?

I'm sure more questions will come up as the trip gets closer.

    Thanks,

Your tour operator should be able to look after gun and license issues.
For the moment I don't believe there are any special rules beyond
legislated common sense safe storage and care are required and you must
have a valid hunting license to carry a gun in the open. You will have
to do some paperwork at customs to bring the gun through. As you may have
guessed from the previous replies this will change somewhat in the
future. If the current proposals go into place you would be required to
take a course and pass a test on gun safety and pay a hefty fee.

You will require hunting and fishing licenses, even to catch & release
    fish.

As for the black fly I can't say it better than the folk song that
    goes:
"O the black fly, little black fly,
always the black fly wherever I go,
I'll die with the black fly pickin' my bones
    	 in North Ontario..

Seriously the only thing that might help a bit is a repellent
containing DEET, a repellent developed for the military. Greasy nasty
stuff, the active ingredient is retained in body fat with prolonged use
and no data exists on the long term effects but for a week trip I'd take
the risk and bathe in the stuff. Popular brand name for the stuff is
    Muskol.

I'd figure 4 hours Toronto to Subdury baring rush hour on the 400
highway but it's been a long time since I made that drive so I may be
    underestimating.

    >>This to preserve your right to hunt as a tourist...

We must do something to stop this erosion of "rights". Since
the ones the government will protect are in the constitution, why
don't we quote the part that specifies the tourists have the "right"
to bring guns into the country and blow away our wildlife. Kinda
reminds me of Africa (why dose'nt that make me feel good?).

Hey I have an idea, why don't we kill nearly all the black bears so they
will become "rare". Then we could charge a heck of alot more for the
"right" to kill the last couple. Preferably we would sell these "rights"
to tourists to help the balance of trade.

    							Derek.

(PS. I am not against hunting, I am against the use of the word "right"
in the same sentance as an activity related to gun use.)

How about moving the previous note to the gun note...that

Ah yes,

Northern Ontario and Norther Quebec.

Where black flies and mosquitoes are so big they have to get down on their
knees to bite you...

Usually the black fly/mosquito situation improves around end of July/beginning
of August.

Use Muskol with at least 40% deet. Any more is apparently not worth it and
may not be too good for you.

re: time to sudbury; 4hrs is a good estimate but i would suggest you
take the ferry from tobermory to manitoulin island. You woul go north
from Toronto along hwy 6 until the end. Signs to the ferry are well
marked. This trip woul take you about 8 hrs but the drive down hwy 6 is
beautiful and manitoulin island is also spectacular.
re:black flies. I have tree-planted in northern ontario during black
fly season and suggest the following: spray 2 handkercheifs with deet
or off and tie one around your neck and the other on your head. Spray
the upper portion of your socks with the same and tie down both pant
and shirt cuffs, did i mention you should wear long sleeves? I there is
an exposed part of your body with no deet the flies will find them.
This is of course an extreme measure but take it from a person who has
had black fly bites over 40% of his body, it sucks and can really put a
kink in you well laid plans. You may also want to wear neutral colour
clothing, ie. brown, grey, medium green, etc.
re: what to do in sudbury? Not much, nice smoke stack thats about it.
re: weather in june. Well the snow should be all gone but the mornings
are frosty -2C - +5C. It may be cold in the morning but all you have
todo is find a patch of sunlight and wham! instant warmth. During the
day you get highs of about +20C but most probably 12C - 18C.
Good luck, I envy you, I left my heart in White River Ont. Oh yeah one
more thing. Clean your campsites when you leave.

Thanks for all of the info so far. I just realized that the base camp
is another 5 hours past Sudbury....looks like a long drive ahead.

Has anyone ever heard of getting a Vitamin B shot before going into the
woods? Someone told me that it might help keep the flies away. Sounds
    too easy.

The name of the lake is, Paypeeshek. The seaplane base is in Foleyet,
about 200 mi NNW of Sudbury. The outfitter is Air Ivanhoe.

    Where is Ivanhoe Lake?

Resort is not the word I would use to describe it! The trip is a float
plane fly-in, wilderness adventure. It is a combined bear hunting and
catch & release fishing trip, for one week. The seaplane base is on Ivanhoe
Lake, but the camp we are going to is about 150 miles north on lake
Paypeeshek. There is a facility on Ivanhoe, but we will only be there
    one night.

    re .09

I have heard about taking vitamin B shots or tablets to help fight off
black fly/mosquito bites but haven't heard of any success using it.
    Anything is worth a try.

I use to work as a fishing guide at a place called Island Lake Lodge
which is about 40 miles from Parry Sound and we had lots of flies.
Deer flies were worse than the black flies and mosquito.
One thing that worked for us was to wear light colored clothing - we
all usually wore white coveralls and taped the leg and wrist openings.
RAther hot on some days, but kept the flies away.
Use lots of replellant on your clothes and skin.

We did find that drinking vast amounts of Irish whiskey kept the
flies away as well...or maybe we just didn't feel the bites.

    Good luck with your trip

Some answers to the base note.

Toronto to Sudbury will take about 4-5 hours depending on traffic.

If you follow the directions of what everone has told you so far about
blackflies then you should be fine.

Air Ivanhoe? Never heard of it!

Firearm regulations, better to contact a Ministry of Natural Resources
    office and ask them.

Things to do and see in Sudbury. Well, contrary to .8 there is lots to
do in Sudbury. You can go to Science North (similar to Ontario Science
Center), go underground at the Big Nickel, Sudbury has many lakes
within the city limits to try your fishing luck or to go swimming in.
At night you can watch INCO pour slag (looks like lava flows from a
volcano). One thing that I have to agree with .8 on is Manitoulin
Island. I was born and raised there (Little Current)and it really is a
beautiful place. Try to visit if you can!

Weather conditions. Expect rain, fog, sun, sometimes hail, and cool temps.
Sometimes all in the same day!

    Have a good trip,

Sorry about slamming Sudbury like that, I am from Hamilton and always
hear bad things said about my home town. Heavy industry is not pretty
and it takes some thought to be able to appreciate what can be seen in
    cities like Hamilton and Sudbury.

    Truly sorry.
