843.0. "CFL, 1994" by GUCCI::RWARRENFELTZ (Follow the Money!) Thu Jun 30 1994 10:46

    The upstart Baltimore CFL's {but you can really call them 'da Colts}
just one its second ever CFL contest...I know it's only exhibition but
hey, I may not be doing much crowing come September.

Guess it took us Yanks to really show you how football was supposed to
    be played!

Memorial Stadium last night looked like it did in the '60s when Johhny
U, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry and Mike Curtis were kings of football,
    the first America's Team.

I guess that Baltimore may become Canada's Team also!

I'm not sure what it means when you say "just one its second". This
greatly vexes me and I shall ponder its significance during my extended
    vacation interval.

How many people showed up for the game?

I think Americans will enjoy the Canadian rules and game. It's much
faster paced that the NFL because of the 3 downs.

    GR:

That should have read 'won it's second game.'

Place was packed, rumbling like it did back in the Colts heyday of the
50's & 60's especially down on the U end of the field.

Does look like the typical CFL player is in better physical condition
than their NFL counterparts. As for the majority of Americans liking
CFL play more than NFL, well, if the NFL rules committee continues to
see droves watching the canuck version, look for the NFL to pay a kind
of flattery to the CFL by copying some of its rules. I like it!

    Thanks to American expansion, yes.

So what's the latest scoop? Can the Baltimore team use the word "Colts"
    yet?

Well, Baltimore gave the Canucks some action this year and came very
close to winning the whole ball of wax. Hats off, not only to my CFLs,
    but the winners also!

Great game !! I've been a BC fan since birth, and let me tell you,
there has not been alot to cheer about. The East West thing lost it's
signifigance when they called Winnipeg an eastern team. I think this
North South thing might be enough to keep the interest going.
Unfortunatly we have a couple of teams (Ottawa for example) that
coudn't manage a free beer party at a brewery.

Anybody heard the rumor (reported AS a rumor on TSN) that the CFL will
    be renamed the NAFL?

re. -1: The NAFL sounds too much like the NFL and so they'd probably get sued.

The Globe reported that the CFL will probably change it's name within days...
most likely to either the Can-am Football League or the North American
Football League with Continental Football League being a longshot.

Personally, I can't think of a better way to ruin Canadian pro football
than to change its name. While they're at it why don't they add a
fourth down, remove a player, make the field narrower, quarterbacks whiter,
etc...

Mike.

    re: -1
Well NAFL stands for North American Football League. :)

I was listening to a panel of sports writers...whose main beat was
    football not hockey.
One of them commented that you [the CFL fans] should get use to seeing
American size fields in the future. They did not expect the rules to
change until the influence [ie power/money] shifts from Canadian hands
    to US hands.
