810.0. "Credit Cards in Supermarkets??" by ROCKS::YOUNG (Geoff Young @REO) Fri Mar 25 1994 10:37

When I was last in British Columbia and Alberta in '92 it was virtually
impossible to use a credit card to purchase food in a supermarket.

The only supermarket which would accept plastic was a Safeway in Banff.
I recall the checkout operator there telling me that this was the only
supermarket that she knew which took credit cards.

Has the situation changed in the last two years? or is it still a case
of cash or travellers cheques only?

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Vancouver Safeways started accepting Master Card about six months ago,
but only Master Card. As of now, they do not accept anything else.
I've heard there are plans in the works to for them to take VISA.

I dont know about the other big supermakets but I would image they have
    followed suit.

As you probably know, you can also use your bank card to make a direct
    payment if you like.

    Cheers,
    Dave

They were even talking about having the LCBO's open on Sundays (over
the Holiday season) as well as having them take plastic. I would
certainly take advantage of that - very civilized in my mind.

One of the many reasons I love living there.
Great access to the Ocean, the Mountains, the City, and BEER :-)
