744.0. "Quebec Boss Bids Adieu" by KAOFS::B_SLADE () Wed Sep 15 1993 15:10

    Premier Robert Bourassa retires.

I have always viewed Bourassa from an 'English' perspective.
    Wonderment, naivety yet respect.

    Some questions:

How was he viewed in Quebec? Who will replace him? Will Federalism
survive in Quebec? How will they fair in the next general election?
Why did he 'really' retire? Does this help JP and the Parti Quebquois?
Were the 'tributes' he has received from 'English Canada' deserving
from a Quebecers point of view or a reaction of things to come?

    Any comments.

In Quebec Bourassa was always well known for his *vagueness* in everything he ever talks about.
It was one of his famous traits. You could always expect him to give a wishy-washy answer on
anything he was ever asked in public. He was a master at carefully using his words when phrasing
an answer.

Most people seem to be sad but glad to see him go. I think he's done his time and it's time to
get some new blood in. His successor may be one of:

o Lise Bacon - Vice premier and minister of Energy (I think)
o Gerald Tremblay - Minister of Industry and Trade (I think)
o Daniel Johnson - Minister of something and brother of once-PQ Leader Pierre-Marc Johnson
o Yves Seguin - Ex-minister of Revenue. Resigned over the implementation of the GST

Leadership convention is in January 94.

Mario,

Please when you use DECwindows Notes, ensure that your width is 80
characters or less ... those of us reading with DECterms or real
terminals have a bit of a hard time with the long lines.

Stuart,

I didn't use DECwindows Notes...Take a guess what I used.

I'll be more careful next time.

In a previous reply, someone accused Mr. Bourassa of being vague whenever he
spoke. Surely this can't be a criticism since this is the prime prerequisite
of being a politician, isn't it?
