608.0. "Algonquin Provincial Park Centennial -- 1993" by TROOA::DLOTEN (Semper ubi sub ubi.) Thu Sep 03 1992 23:00

As a recent returnee to and devotee of Algonquin Park, I like to post an
excerpt from the 1992 Interior User's Information newsletter.

My love of Algonquin dates back to my first experience with canoeing as a
Boy Scout in 1965. I've been back probably 15 times in the intervening
years, with my last excursion over the August 15th weekend.

Next year marks Algonquin Park's Centennial! Don't miss it!

If you have any good (or bad) memories of Algonquin, feel free to share
    them here.

    -doug

                            A Welcome and an Invitation!

It is my pleasure to wish you the warmest possible welcome to Algonquin
Provincial Park. Whether you have been coming here for years or are just
now making your first trip. I want you to have a visit worthy of what is
    truly a magnificent landscape.

Of course, the chances are good that you will, because Algonquin has
obviously occupied a very special place in the hearts and minds of a great
many people for a great many years. Quite literally millions of visitors
have precious memories of an Algonquin experience-perhaps the
unforgettable fishing trip twenty years ago, perhaps falling asleep after
a hard day with the wild calls of loons reverberating from ancient moonlit
hills, or perhaps marvelling from a cliff top at wild, rugger country
stretching as far as the eye can see.

Algonquin has been very important for a long time and, in fact, we are
just one year away from celebrating the Park's one hundredth birthday. In
keeping with this historic milestone we are working on a whole range of
new, Centennial facilities, products and events to mark the occasion. You
will find a brief description of some of the projects on pages 6 and 7 of
this tabloid and we hope you find them as exciting as we do. Some are
being done by the government, some are being done by the private sector
and some are being done by The Friends of Algonquin Park, either on their
own or in partnership with us.

It is especially noteworthy in these difficult economic times that The
Friends of Algonquin Park have launched and achieved considerable success
in a major, $4 million fundraising campaign aimed at financing all or
parts of the exhibits in the new Visitor Centre, the new Logging Museum
and the new trails. Everyone who reveres Algonquin oves a special vote of
thanks to The Friends' volunteeer fundraising committee chaired by Frank
    Miller, former Premier of Ontario.

It is my pleasure to extend a formal invitation to you-an invitation to
enjoy the Centennial facilities and products that are already available
and to come back next year and see all the others now being prepared.

I sincerely hope you will find them worthy of Algonquin, the oldest and
most beloved park in Ontario, now about to enter its second century.

                                        G.E. (Ernie) Martelle

I was very dissapointed with Algonquin park.

I thought, as the above said, that the landscape would be interesting.

All I saw were trees and water - and loads of mosquitos.

Of the trip to Canada, this was the only place that I would say that
I would definately NOT visit again.

The trouble is that starting soon is the time to visit Algonquin ...
as the leaves are turning in the fall. Mosquitos aren't quite so
    active now either.

Then you'd see the beautiful scenery that Tom Thompson painted.

Imagine what the settlers in the 1700s saw when they came to Canada
... trees and water and mosquitos. Why did ANYONE ever stay ???

Well Heather, that was to make you feel right at home ... :-)

I can see why you'd have a negative impression of Algonquin ...
We were on P.E.I. this summer, trying to keep dry and avoid being
eaten too badly by the swarms of mosquitos .. It really did spoil
the enjoyment of what was really quite a beautiful spot.

Well...it just shows to go ya. When I, my wife and two kids were over
in Europe and the UK in 1987, it rained for a total of 5 days out of
    21. The only mosquito I saw was in our hotel on the Meuse river, east
    of Paris...and it was dead.

In December 1988, whilst in England and Ireland for 10 days, there was
a 'dash' of wetness for about 2 hours near Cork. Of course, no
    mosquitos.

Last June 1991, again in England and Ireland, showers for about 3 days
out of 24...no mosquitos this time.

Now, the summer of 1992 in Ontario, cold, wet and lost of mosquitos.

    Conclusion: Stay in Europe!

Summers in Ireland don't have mosquitos but they are usually cold and
wet. Believe me, I've been here for the last 16 of 'em. And very
little sunshine. SO as long as you're prepared for that, you'll love
this place. Rushton obviously does. :-)

don't tell me they're in Montreal, I know that already.

with the conversation now turning to the weather...
( - are you sure you're not all English?)

it reminds me of a personal name I saw recently

"The wettest drought in history " (thanks Jamie)

I think that sums up the UK at the moment.

Maybe the rain just follows me wherever I go!

Sheesh, all this agro in the name of a tidy notes conference. You
complain about simple requests ... there are files where these notes

re: .5 (and ignoring all the interventions about the next World Series
            champions!)

    Heather,

It's really too bad that all you saw of Algonquin was the rain! I had
the same problem in May when we were in your neck of the woods
(relatively). We had 3 weeks of sun and heat, except for the day we
visited Blenheim Palace...and all I really remember was the buckets of
    rain. Oh well!

It's too bad you weren't able to experience the peace and calm, sitting
around a crackling fire on a still night, with the only noise coming
from the Loons on the next lake.

Well gotta go! My canoe's waiting...

I just returned from my 'annual' pilgrimage to Algonquin...spent 4
glorious days...all sun, no bugs, plenty of canoeing, swimming, eating
and sleeping. Plus the 'best' view of the night sky that I've had in
    more than 20 years!

I took a good friend and his 4 boys along...a good time was had by all!
