602.0. "Mariposa and other festivals" by GNUVAX::QUIRIY (sweet labors of love) Thu Aug 13 1992 05:33

No note on the Mariposa Festival?
(Perhaps this can be a generic festival note?)

I'm down in the US, in Massachusetts. I saw part of a show on
cable TV (The Learning Channel) called "The Canadian Woodstock"
(or something to that effect -- although I think it's a stupid
title, it did catch my attention). It was all about a multi-day
music festival called the Mariposa Festival. I'd like to know
more: at the least, when and where is it held? Have I missed this
year's fest? Is it still being held or have I missed it for all
time? Any first person accounts will be read with enjoyment!

Some of the musicians that were featured sounded really interesting and
I'd never heard of them! (e.g., Fat Man Waving, Willie Burnett, can't
    remember any more now.)

    Thanks,

    Cq

Yes you have missed this years festival. Mariposa has been around for
years and had several incarnations, originally it was held on the Toronto
Islands then in the mid eighties it moved to Molson Park in Barrie for a
few years. For the last two years it has been held at Ontario Place. It's
usually held in the 3rd or 4th week of June. The Mariposa folks run events
at various venues in the city year round. You can call them at
    (416)-588-6699

Calling it "The Canadian Woodstock" is wildly misleading, Mariposa is
just a folk festival, much like many other folk festivals that run
throughout Canada & the US. As such things go it's a pretty good one
    but it's no Woodstock.

For what it's worth Fat Man Waving is a band led by the woman who
played keyboards on the first couple Jane Sibbery Band records. They're
    based in Ottawa.
