487.0. "Vacation in BC - info needed" by LUTZ::ECKLE () Fri Aug 09 1991 06:09

    Hi everybody,

I just discovered this Notes Conference and I think it is
    very interesting.

I spent one year in Vancouver (1982) as an Au-pair girl
(live-in housekeeper, Nanny,...) and I loved it!!!
(Not the working part, but the people, the city, B.C.)

Now I'll go back to Vancouver to spend my honeymoon there -
5 weeks. We'll fly to Vancouver (Sept. 3rd), rent a car for
three weeks and take the route Vancouver - Vancouver Island -
Pacific Rim National Park - Port Hardy, ferry to Prince Rupert and
back to Vancouver. Then we'll rent a motorhome for two weeks
and drive from Vancouver to Calgary.

In the first 3 weeks we want to either go camping (tent) or
maybe spent some nights in hotels - depending on the weather.

So - I'm interested in info about:

    * Vancouver Island (nice places, campgrounds, etc.)
    * the route Prince Rupert - Prince George - Vancouver ("")
    * the route Vancouver - Calgary
    * possible canoeing places in these areas
    * Are some campgrounds closed in September/October?

I'm also interested in ways to save money - the dollar has
gone up and it is very expensive for us now to go to Northern
America (It was 1 US$ for DM 1,50, now it is 1 US$ for DM 1,85!!)

My VAXmail node is KAMPUS::ECKLE, All-in-1 address is Ursula
    Eckle @ KAR.

Thanks very much for help - it's not that easy to get good
    information from so far away...

    Bye,
    Uschi

I can't answer all of your questions in detail at the moment. If I get
a chance I will call up the Parks and Recreation Ministry to see if the
Provincial Parks are closed in Sept. The National Parks campgrounds
    certainly won't be closed...

In Early september, you could get really nice indian summer warm sunny
weather, or cold and rain. The west coast is certainly going to be the
most exposed, and I would not recommend canoeing off the coast. A nice
alternative would be to rent a kayak at Port Alberni, (Vanc Island) take
a small passenger boat (M.V. Rose) out to the Broken Islands group just
off the Pacific Rim National Park, and paddle around there for days.
You will enjoy Long Beach at the Pacific Rim National Park.

I don't know much about Prince Rupert, but I can certainly recommend
the Queen Charlotte Islands (75 miles off Prince Rupert) for kayaking
and scenery if you can get there. Ferry runs from Rupert several times
    a day.

Once you get back into the interior, there is a well-known chain of
lakes in the central interior just perfect for a canoe trip. These are
the Bowron Lakes, and they are in a provincial park of the same name.
You might need to make "reservations" in sept, but i doubt it. Call
the Parks Ministry as soon as you get to Vanc or Victoria for more
info. Closest town is Williams Lake, and I guess you can rent canoes
    there.

    Regards
    Pieter

September in the Bowron chain will be cool-to-frosty at night, but
pleasant during the day. No bugs.
