| I'll try to answer some of these, although I can only give opinions
and don't have published statistics handy...
Weather: Vanc is in a rain forest. Mild winters (rarely below
freezing, maybe one light snow per year). BUT it rains
frequently from Nov-early March. We are at the foot
of several local mountains, and close to the famous
resort at Whistler, so all of the rain we get translates
into hundreds of inches of snow up there...
Summers are mild on the coast - highs maybe 30 degrees
C once per summer in town. Heat is only a problem in
some valleys in the interior - highs up to 40 degrees.
Economy: Better than the rest of Canada - national stats released
this week put unemployment at 10.2% BC has weathered
the recession better than central Canada - although
we are still heavily dependent upon the primary resource
industries (forestry, mining, japanese tourism). High
tech has indeed gained a toe-hold here, but people are
conservative with respect to hiring. Digital is doing
well here with respect to the rest of Canada.
Housing: Housing prices zoomed 30-50% between 86 and 89. Slump
was relative, prices did not plummet - they just held steady.
Many credit additional asiatic buyers with maintaining
the price levels. New mini- condos are now being built
on former Expo lands in city core, around false creek,
will be priced at over $200k for 750 sq ft or so.
Prices are reasonable further out in the burbs, $200k will
get you a modest 3 bedroom cookie cutter house in a
new subdivision (no trees yet, just asphalt and dirt).
Houses in the really nice areas near the city centre
run from 400k up.
Best time to visit:
March-April for Spring skiing, possibly some sailing, whale
migration off Vanc Island.
late July early Aug for warmest sunniest weather, mountain
climbing, water stuff kayaking sailing, camping
Seattle is 120 miles by Interstate. Allow some time for
customs, say 2-1/2 hrs.
Hope this helps...
