431.0. "Brother's off the network!" by SUBURB::THOMASH (The Devon Dumpling) Wed Apr 10 1991 10:46

Okay, I'm trying to find my brother.

He left a message on my ansaphone with his new number, however, the
power went halfway through, so the message said:

"Hi Heather, it's Ian, we've just about moved into our new place,
the phone number is 4 (funny scramble noise) er 42" ..........silence.

So, how do I find him? He's in Toronto, his wife teaches chiropody in
	Toronto General hospital.

Brothers name is Ian Oliver, and his wife is Tracey Oliver, or she
could be keeping her maiden name of Tracey Hudson.

	Clues where to start?

Heather (It's one of those weeks!)

    Heather,

You can reach directory assistance at 416-555-1212 ..

I tried and they have one Ian Simon and about half dozen I. Simon's ..
anyway the Ian Simon is on Elmsdale and the number is 416-423-5548.

All you can do is try that and see if he wants to be your brother...

I just spoke to a rather surprised Ian Oliver at 416-423-5548.

He is indeed, your long lost brother, Heather. I explained to him the
situation, and he said he'll call you back, sometime soon, unless
    you call him first.

Not that she needs to now, but Heather can't call directory assistance on
416-555-1212. She must, instead, call BT International Directory Inquiries
at 153. They will not have the most current information.

The CCITT recommendations specifically prohibit permitting numbers for
directory assistance to work in international telephony. By special
agreement, it works between the U.S. and Canada. Canadians will notice
that they cannot call 809-555-1212 as can be done from the U.S. because
Canada doesn't have the international agreements with the Caribbean nations
covered by that area code.

USA Direct, reachable from the U.K. on 0800-89 00 11, will connect you
directly to U.S. directory assistance. Some operators may make you say
you will make a call through USA Direct, but as soon as you get the number
you can hang up, and they don't have your number.

Canada Direct, reachable from the U.K. on 0800-89 00 16, may or may not
be willing to provide directory assistance.

I guess I stand corrected on all accounts ...

My mind was elsewhere when I typed Simon, and the international details
is just pure ignorance ... thks Covert.

While you cannot get international directory assistance by dialling
direct, invariably the operator in country of the caller calls
directory assistance in the called country, and *usually* you are
a party to a conversation between directory assistance operators.

I have often managed to talk directly with the remote operator
either by a) jumping in both feet first, or b) when the local
operator gets confused in the information relay, or c) when the
local operator dumps you on hold with the remote DQ ringing to
momentarily do something else. It sure helps to cut down on the
time spent on the DQ call instead of using the local operator as
    a vocal relay!

True from the U.S. and Canada, but not from Europe. Over there, they get
periodic updates of paper directories, and use them.

	Thanks Scooter,

Ian left another message on the ansaphone, it said

"Hi heather, I think you didn't get the number, it's 416....." and the
	message ended.

It's a remote-type answer machine, and I think the noise on some of the
international lines must be activating the "stop" feature!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks very much, I'll give him a call tonight, and let him know our
flight times have changed - so he knows when to pick us up!!!!!!

Of course, this is one good reason to have friends and relations living in the
smaller areas. Any time I have had to get a Canadian number from here in the
U.K., the operator had 'phoned to Canada and then 'phoned me back with the
number.

You know, I was going to put a 'nasty' reply into the GB_91 notesfile,
because I asked the simple question there about how to find a long lost
friend and found the next 25+ replies discussing the ways and means of
how to get ex-directory (ie. unlisted) numbers from their telephone
    company.

However, after reviewing the very helpful replies to Heather's simple
question, I'll withdraw the remark! Maybe its not the nationality that
matters, but rather the employer!! 8^)

Well, my brothers moved again, off rural route three, sounds like he's
lost himself out in the sticks, somewhere near a place called
	Schomberg.

I've just come back to this topic to find the info about directory
enquiries, so I'll try the 153 number tonight...........

I wonder if it's by accident he moves, and the ansaphone hangs up
before he gives me the number????????????

    Heather,

I called your brother at 1707h EDT and got his ansaphone. I left a
message indicating that you were trying to locate him and that you were
going to try to contact him tonight. I also suggested that he might
try ringing you in case you are unsuccessful. I'm sending his
telephone number via VAXmail to you.

Have a pint for me at 'The Volunteer'.

	Thanks pat,

He called me, and got cut off after 416-..... there must be some
static/noise on the line that sets the ansaphone to "off", anyway,
thanks to your mail, I phoned..........and got his ansaphone, its
	definately the right number!

At least now I have his number, I aught to catch up with him over the
	weekend.

I've had a pint or two for you, they were delicious!!!!!!!

And I'll have a couple or so more over this holiday weekend.
