| A law was passed in Canada upon completion of the Grand Canal which
required all vehicles to have their headlights on particularly in
pre-dawn situations. The reason is so that the police cruisers on the
Grand Canal can spot speeders on the Trans-Canada which runs parallel
to it.

| I thought that there was a newer law, one requiring all new model cars
to be designed to turn on there headlights automaticly when the car is
turned on.
Theres even some little gizmo you can buy from CTC to do this for
you.

If not low beam headlamps, many manufacturers have opted for so-called
DRLs (Daytime Runnning Lights).
The idea comes from Sweden, where after a law requiring DRLs was
implemented daytime acccidents noticeably declined.
Note that for people who put them on manually, they should use LOW
beams and don't make the extension ... If somebody can see me with
low beams then they should be better able to see me with HIGH beams.
You can still be horribly dazzled during the day with high beams!

| The new daytime running lights are high beam but low intensity, you
can't see very much at night when they're on( Ford Tauris).

I believe this practice was legislated first in Finland from
which the Ontario government sought to illustrate as justification to
do likewise in this province.
In my travels in Ohio, Mass. and Maryland I have had on-coming
drivers flash their headlights at me, during the daytime, to indicate
that I had my lights on - they seemed oblivious to the safety-related
reason for DRL. At a toll booth in Mass., I even had the boffin tell
me about the fact that my lights were on and proceeded to scoff at my
explanation. I guess some people see DRL legislation as an infringement
on their rights of free choice - it brings new meaning to the New
Hampshire phrase "Live Free or Die", in this case it should read
"Live Free and Die".
Lights on, and be seen!

As a New Hampshire resident...
Out of all New England states, NH drivers are more willing to use
their headlights during the day on two lane highways. It is even
suggested on Rte 101 for drivers to use their headlights.
Some NH legislatures may feel it is a freedom of choice, but, what
kind of choice can you make if the lights stay on regardless of
what you do. (newer cars.)
