403.0. "Suggestions and questions for Toronto visit" by FORTSC::MOK () Wed Jan 30 1991 19:07

I will be visiting Toronto this weekend until next Tuesday. This will
be my first time in Toronto and Canada. Can anyone recommend some
places to go and see at this time of the year? Would a rental car be
needed or advised? Also, what is the weather like recently and what is
the forecast for the weekend you have heard? A friend told me you are
expecting a snow storm Thursday? What after that?

    Thanks in advance!!

Charles, welcome to Canada. Toronto has a lot of places to see. I
would like to recommend Ontario Place, CN Tower, Science Centre. I
think you need to rent a car, Metro Toronto is quite big. East to west
may take you one hour on the highway. The rush hour in Toronto is
almost bumper to bumper. The Ottawa here weather foecast for the next
couple of days are quite good, I will check the Toronto weather
forecast. You may have already heard the Chinese dishes in Toronto, I
would say it is the best in North America because it houses a huge
    Chinese population of 300,000.

SkyDome is another good place to visit....and Niagara Fall is only 1-1/2
hour from Toronto.

A friend says there's main drag in Toronto running west out of downtown
that has fun, bizarre, and entertaining shops, restaurants, and service
outlets. Can anyone tell me what it's called and more about it? Thanks.

From the description it sounds like your friend is talking about Queen
Street W, running westward from University Avenue. Some of the
    highlights:

Active Surplus (an absolute must for tech weenie types)
    	Bakka Books (science fiction bookshop)
    	Silver Snail (comic's shop)
    	Future Bakery
    	Edward's books and art

Thanks, that's what he was talking about. Is it worth spending the
afternoon there if it's my first trip to Toronto? If you had two
evenings in Toronto, what would you do?

Thanks for the advice, but I don't have a car. Cab fare shouldn't be
too much, though, should it? :)

If you have an afternoon to kill and the weather is nice I'd go for it.
It takes about 2-3 hours to wander frQueen & Soho to Bathurst, provided
you don't spend too much time shopping.

What to do in the evening?

If you like Jazz then hit the Top O' the Senator (watch the cover it
can be steep if big names are playing)

Like Reggae hit the Bamboo on Queen (at Soho) or the Jerk Pit on
Richmond (at John I think), both are also good places to eat.

There are also loads of alternative and rock clubs, The Rivoli,
Ultrasound and the Horseshoe on Queen, Sneaky Dee's on College, The
Cabana Room (in the Spadina Hotel) on King, Lee's Palace on Bloor.

Pick up an issue of Now Magazine (which is actually a tabloid
newspaper, go figger, available free at lots of restaurants, clubs,
theaters and so on) it lists what's happening at the clubs.

There are several good repatory theaters and lots of live theater.
