399.0. "Operation Desert Storm" by TRCO01::FINNEY (Keep cool, but do not freeze) Thu Jan 17 1991 16:09

At the moment, Canadian Forces are authorized to provide CAP (Combat
Air Patrol), Sweep and Escort missions in support of the massive,
violent and thorough Allied attacks on Iraq & Iraqi positions in
    Kuwait.

They have not yet received Operational orders to do any of the above,
except for the CAP over the Allied Naval Forces in the gulf, and
Air Defence screeing by the ships.

The newspapers here tell you very little about countries other than the
U.S. and G.B. I read that Canada had 18 planes and 3 ships. Do we have
any troops involved and if so how many?

    Thanks.

    Ted.

No ground forces. News conference right now in SA says Canadian
fighters are flying Air Defence & CAP missions over Iraq.

There are approx 100 VanDoos in Quatar providing security for the
Canadian base, so we do have some grunts in the area.

An additional six F18s have been deployed and there are now 24 flying.

Canada has agreed to supply a field hospital but it will be
approximately 50 days before it can be deployed. Although the
establishment exists the actual personnel are scattered across the
country as well as the equipment.

News this morning has Canadian planes now flying Sweep & Escort for
the increased bombing raids. While it is essentially what they
have been doing, rather than waiting for targets to come to them,
they are going looking for targets.

399.5Good press for Canadian Air Force11SRUS::HEWITTStandard du jourFri Jan 18 1991 13:017
You will be pleased to learn that the Canadian Air Force (Canadian Forces?) is
getting good press from Schwartkopf (sp?). In his press conference this morning
he was asked about Canadian participation and stated that they became active as
soon as they arrived in the theatre of operations.

Actually, I heard earlier that Canadian Forces - Air Element now has 24
CF-18's fully operational in a "defensive" role...

and training has been "stepped up" at CFB Cold Lake just in case more
    pilots are required later.

(wish I could step-up to Chiliwack & start training to be a Hornet
    jockey)

Sweep and Escort is like forechecking in the offensive zone! You
could with a stretch of the imagination call it defensive ...

As de Chastelain said, now that hostilities are under way, offensive
    vs defensive is a non-issue.

Reports are that a Canadian 707 Tanker saved 2 US a/c from ditching/forced
landing by extraordinary action to bring fuel to them ...

399.9AFP reports...SNOC02::WILLIAMSJOHNSun Jan 20 1991 22:549
Agence France Presse reported today that bad weather caused the
cancellation of Canada's first bombing mission on Sunday - against a
    high priority target in Iraq.

The report quotes Commodore Ken Summers as saying that 4 CF-18s were to
    escort allied attack aircraft.

The AFP report puts Canadian forces in the area as 28 CF-18s in Qatar,
2000 troops and several warships in the Gulf area.

There have also been reports that Canada may send ground troops to
Saudi. A friend of mine in Germany has been informed that his outfit
will be moving if this occurs.

    Dismissed and, as yet, unlikely.
