384.1Jays biggest trade EVER!TROA09::GOBRIENGlenn O'Brien @TRO 2/13Wed Dec 05 1990 21:009
    Toronto traded Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez to San Diego for Joe
    Carter and Roberto Alomar. Carter is a power hitting left-fielder (115
    RBI's last year). Alomar is a good defensive second baseman, with good
    average and speed (.287, 24 steals last year).

    In other news, Gruber, Wallach and Galaragga received Gold Gloves
    yesterday.

384.2Baseball Status ???GVA01::ATKINSONJust the facts kidThu Dec 06 1990 07:448
    I read in the Globe & Mail that some group is/was thinking of buying
    the Expos and moving them to Toronto (Exposition Stadium). Any more
    news on this? And how are things going in Montreal over the Expos? Have
    they come up with $100M yet?

    Alan

    P.S. Good initiative on staring this note.
384.3Expos staying in MontrealKAOA01::LAPLANTEThu Dec 06 1990 10:5810

    The Expos have been bought by a Canadian consortium and will be
    remaining in Montreal.

    The Olympic Installations Board, which manager the Big O, will be
    spending some more millions to improve it for baseball. They will be
    moving home plate back approx 40 ft and installing some new viewing
    screens/score boards.

384.4Jays unloading CERTAIN playersKAOFS::WATTERSThu Dec 06 1990 14:356
    Is it true that the Jays are trying to unload their Dominican-
    Republic players; Junior Felix, Tony Fernandez, Nelson Lariano,
    George Bell(offered him only $2M/yr, wants $4M so they traded
    for Joe Carter), and ????.

384.6that's a loaded questionTROA02::GOBRIENGlenn O'Brien @TRO 2/13Thu Dec 06 1990 17:0227
    Liriano was traded because we had too many middle infielders, he was
    hitting around .200, and we needed a lefty reliever. That trade wasn't
    related to the current flurry of activity.

    Felix would not listen to those trying to teach him the game. Efforts
    to turn this guy into a decent fielder and a basestealing threat were
    in vain.

    Fernandez has spent more time whining over the past two years than
    everyone else put together (except Bell). Great fielder, but he
    carries too much emotional baggage into the game. He is not a team
    player.

    The Jays are doing Bell a favour. With his bum shoulder (doctors
    recommended surgery two years ago), his numbers CAN NOT get back to
    1987, 1988 levels. He refuses to get the shoulder fixed, he refuses to
    play DH, and he mouths off at every opportunity. If he signs a
    one-year extension to his contract, and gets his shoulder fixed, he
    could easily garner $4M next year.

    I don't think the Jays are getting rid of the Dominicans. They are
    getting rid of players that just can't play a team sport. It should be
    noted that Lee is still with the team, and that one non-Dominican of
    significant importance has been traded. The team needed an overhaul of
    its major players: most of them happened to be Dominican.

384.7Bell goneKAOA01::LAPLANTEFri Dec 07 1990 10:5215

    Well, George is gone.

    Signed with the Cubs for three years $10M. This probably gives the
    Cubs the oldest outfield in baseball when you team Bell and Dawson.
    I think Toronto will be better off with him gone.

    I don't believe Toronto has anything against Dominicans. The trades
    were needed for the team and happenned to involve Dominicans. Toronto
    almost single handed developped the current crop of Dominicans in the
    major leagues and they still have one of the strongest scouting groups
    in that country. They also have a lot of Dominican prospects in the
    minors.

384.8Sure could use Liriano, Felix and Bell in the 'FAXOTOA01::BEATONFri Dec 07 1990 19:0515
    How the *%#! are you Glen!!

    Great to see you are the first of the group of us to start a notes
    conference.....on the Toronto Blue Jays! Good Stuff!

    I think George Bell is going to turn out to be just like Andre Dawson:
    Down and out for the count with the Expos, rejuvinated SuperStar with
    the Cubs. Bell too could be back on the road to success (Although he
    doesn't have a chance at a Golden Glove).

    Hello and congrats from all the boys in the 'FAX!

384.9Canuck Hall of FamerTROA09::GOBRIENRaiders on the StormWed Jan 09 1991 12:206
    Although not relating to the Jays or Expos, there was great news for
    Canadian baseball yesterday. Ferguson Jenkins from Chatham, Ontario
    was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jenkins won 284 games, with
    seven 20-win seasons (six in a row, 1967-1972).

384.10No Baseball in OzSNOC01::SWIFTBLAKEMon Jan 14 1991 22:0816
    Glenn,

     Good to see the baseball note. My only request is recognition of the
    second part of the title... the Montreal Expos. Having moved in August,
    1989 with DEC from TRO to SNO (Sydney, Australia), I receive very little
    info on my team.
     The sports here are basically cricket - which I am learning to
    enjoy (went to NZ vs. Oz at the Sydney cricket ground this past
    weekend) and various forms of rugby.

    keep up the communication.

    good on ya,

384.11Pointer to BASEBALL conferenceTROA09::GOBRIENRaiders on the StormTue Jan 22 1991 12:5015
    Blake,

    Long time no see! How's Syndey treating you?

    The Expos traded Tim Raines to the White Sox for Ivan Calderone and a
    relief pitcher (can't remember who, but he had a great ERA last year).

    Kevin Gross left via free agency.

384.12EXPO'S SCHEDULE ANYONE?ASABET::KNIPSTEINTue Feb 05 1991 13:027
    I am looking for info on Expos home games in April and May. A group of
    us from Boston will be going up to Montreal for a weekend and we want
    to catch a game. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I've been
    trying in the baseball conference for over 2 months now, just found
    this one so hope my luck is better)

384.13I've got tickets, how do I get to the park?KAOA12::SMELLIEWed Aug 07 1991 16:296
    What is the quickest way to get to the SkyDome? I will be driving in
    from Ottawa for the game on Saturday. It is a 1:35 start, so I will be
    somewhat rushed to find parking. Is my best bet to park somewhere away
    from the stadium and use public transit to get to the dome?

384.141992 Schedule?RHODES::NEWFELLFri Jan 31 1992 13:535
    Does anyone have a Blue Jays or Expos schedule for 1992. I will be
    visiting Toronto or Montreal sometime in July and would love to take
    in a game. Also, how would I purchase tickets?

    Thanks
