350.0. ""Ontario today...Canada tomorrow." Bob Rae" by CSC32::G_GRIFFIN (Glynn @ CSC/CS CISG/VIA CXO3-2J3, DTN 522-4710) Sat Sep 08 1990 00:24

    I heard from a friend of mine in Niagara Falls last night that the
    NDP swept the Ontario elections. There was nothing about this on any
    U.S. news broadcast. Peterson did not last long and it looks like the
    populace did not want the Conservatives back. I lived in Winnipeg a
    few years back and the same thing happened out there. However, after
    the NDP had a crack at ruling, the Conservatives came back. I'll make
    a prediction that Manitoba history will repeat itself in Ontario in a
    few years.

350.1NDP wins majority gov't in OntarioTROA09::MSCHNEIDERvi.... the editor from hell!Sat Sep 08 1990 12:4523
    Mr. Rae is indeed the leader of a majority NDP government in Ontario.
    The Liberals are now the Official Opposition with their ranks severely
    decimated. Mr. Peterson lost his own seat and has also tendered his
    resignation as leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

    The breakdown in seats won is something like this:

    NDP		75
    Liberal	35
    PC		20

    It was a real interesting election ... I really could not believe what
    I was seeing. Even SW Ontario which has been staunchly Liberal
    throughout even the heyday of the Progressive Conservative governments
    went for the NDP.

    I guess it was time for the NDP's kick at the can. Let's see if they
    can manage to increase the deficit, increase my taxes and grow the
    government like all their predecessors before them.

    A cynical citizen,

Martin,

Thanks for the update. I, too, have trouble believing such a result - what
an amazing turnaround in Provinicial politics.

What did the NDP do to win?

Thanks again for any news....

    Wellllll...it's more like what did the Liberals do to lose the
    election.
    It seems our NDP gov't is more of a protest vote than anything else,the
    electorate I believe is very tired of lying arrogant polticians
    that have only their own self-interests at heart.Mr Rae should tread
    carefully over the next few years or his party will suffer the same
    fate as Mr Petersons come next election.

    Ohhhh BRIAN...are you listening????

350.4Fringe vote splittingVAOU02::HALLIDAYShe could promise the moon...Tue Sep 11 1990 03:448
    Not only was it a pro-NDP protest vote, the fringe parties split enough
    of the vote to skew the results.

    The fringe vote (especiall Reform) was *very* prominent in the last
    federal election here in B.C., where the result was the NDP winning far
    more seats than their share of the popular vote would have suggested.
