342.0. "Weekend currency exchange?" by CDROM::DUPREZ () Mon Aug 20 1990 13:12

    Hello all,

I will be visiting Montreal next weekend (Aug. 24-27) and will
be arriving by automobile late Friday night. Could anyone give
me suggestions on how and where I could exchange currency (US dollars
    to Canadian dollars)?

Or will I spend the weekend annoying the hell out of shopkeepers,
restaurants, and stores by forcing people to perform conversions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Roland,

On my visits to Montreal, most merchants accepted both Canadian and US
currency, but if you desire to exchange your money almost any bank
would do so or the hotel where you may be residing.

    enter Canada?

    It's not that I CAN'T exchange it, it's that I don't know where.
I haven't done more than a quick border crossing since I was
    a child.

I'm coming from NH - are there banks here that would do the
    exchange?

It's been my experience that you get a better rate by exchanging in Canada.
We've been up there many times from NH and the first time we exchanged our money
at a local (NH) bank. Once in Canada we found the gas stations were giving
a better rate!

Also, don't change too much, you'll loose out changing it back too. We brought
around $600 for one week in cash, exchanging $200 at a time at a bank.

Use plastic as much as possible, no hassles. And yes, you can exchange
    US almost anywhere.

Exchange it at the currency exchange at the border...most major
border crossings have these...this is the easiest route.

I find bank machines on international ATM networks to be the most
convenient way of handling this - my bank is on the Plus network, but
Cirrus is popular in both countries too.

use the ATM .. you get the current rate, a low service charge and
you can take out small quantities at a time.

    Re. 0 >> Where...?

Exchange Centre on corner of PEEL & St. CATHERINE ( Premium rate !)
Mon - Friday from about 9:30 am - 5 pm.
    Saturdays from 9:30 - 3 pm.

Across the street from Exchange Centre - there is Gray Lines Tours..
their rates are not as favorable as the Exchange Centre but they are
late closers - meaning they are open till late in the evening.
The Gray Lines Tours exchange windows are open even on Sundays till 5.pm.
Most of the banks like Royal Bank are *closed on Saturdays.
Royal Bank gives premium rates too, but comparatively the Exhange
Centre on Peel & St. Catherine are the tops.
American Express office on Maisonneuve, near Peel gives good rates
but not as high as the Exchange Centre's.

Nothing wrong with the Sarnia topic. In fact, this is now the
fourth reply we've had in here about it. :-)

I think I will end up taking advice from the majority, and just
take some of the money needed up, using plastic and ATMs for the
    rest.

Now to go find out about currency exchange in Sarnia...

342.19ATM's in CanadaJPLAIN::FRITZThu Aug 23 1990 16:5318
I use the Bank of Montreal for ATM tranactions because it operates
under the CIRRUS network.....also have you heard that the CIRRUS
and Plus System have agreed to access each other making 75% of all
ATM's accessable with a CIRRUS or Plus Card in the US and Canada.

Using an ATM is dependent upon your home bank's limit of withdrawl.
My small NH bank only allows $100.00/day withdrawls.

I visit the Maritimes frequently, and if you get desperate, the
Irving gas stations on the TCH's offer favourable exchange. I do
not know if these stations are in Quebec.....

BTW, I'mm off to Quebec City for the Labour Day weekend...anyone
know of any good campsites for tents near the city that are not
    crowded?

The nicest one is in Mont Saint Anne, the bugs should be dead by labour

If you cross the border at the Bluewater Bridge between Port-Huron
(Michigan) and Sarnia (Ontario), you will find you can get a fair
rate at the duty free shops on both side, as well at the dedicated
exchange outlet at the beginning of HWY 402 on the Sarnia side.

If you decide to spend some time in Sarnia on your way to wherever
it is you are going, you will find several branches of all the major
Canadian chartered banks (RB, BoM,TD, etc...) and teller machines
attached to all major networks. The main trust companies are also
represented in Sarnia and provide the same type of service.

Sarnia is kind of the financial services capital in Lambton County...

If you still have a problem, drop by the office, we'll work something
    for you.

    I hope it helps.

Note 342.21 should be moved to the Sarnia note where it belongs.

Imagine trying to sneak something about Sarnia into another note.
You aren't fooling anyone by trying to make it look like Sarnia
    actually has a bank.

Many thanks to all. Whoever said ATMs were the way to go was
correct (although the one at Berri-UQAM on the Metro was out of
money on Sunday morning - too many Saturday revelers, I presume).
