332.0. "Loonies" by OTOO01::POND () Mon Jul 23 1990 16:49

Ok, as typical Canucks, what is the poop on this?

Does any non-Canadian know what we are talking about?

Who loves 'em, who hates 'em?

Who's heard about the 1990 Queen's portrait fiasco?

Who hates the color they turn when you leave 'em out in the rain?

Do they use these in Sarnia too?

    Add notes as usual...

British and Irish 2p coins work in the Loonie slot of parking meters.

Haven't tried them in anything else.

I have a whole s**twagon load of these lovelies, if you're interested.

I acquired my first Loonie during the Calgary Olympics. My five-man
Luge team won the silver medal, we were so proud that we had it bronzed.
I've sold a number of these whenever I travel to the States - they
really lap 'em up. Just US$10 each, too.

332.10OTOO01::PONDMon Jul 23 1990 20:3429
    This story is the truth.

In spring of 88 two lads and myself travelled to FT. Lauderdale
to catch up on our...er....umm...library interests. Anyway, one
night we were gabbing with these babettes from Boca Raton who I
might say did not border on extreme genius, if you know what I
mean. She asked where we were from, and when we replied 'Ottawa',
she asked the obvious question: 'oh, is that near Calgary?' (this
was during the 88 Winter olympics in Calgary).

We said 'no', but in fact, we had just come from Calgary, since
the three of us just happened to be competing in the four man
Canadian bobsled team, and that lo and behold we had placed third
and won the bronze medal! Well, she said 'no way!' and stuff like
that, but I said 'yes way!' and stuff like that, and noticing that
one of my friends was surreptitiously watching all of this, I
produced a loonie (this was our first night so I still had Cdn
money in my pocket) and told her 'yup we won the bronze and here
it is! See, see the DUCK on the back? The duck is the olympic
symbol for the bronze medal and has been on every bronze medal
since the olympics began. And the queen? Canada...queen, you
    know.'

To make a long story short, she believed all this.

So, if we were able to persuade her into believing this, you should
have seen what ELSE we were able to con her into...

    Barf Karbunk.

    Dear Cathy,

With a good Irish name like Finucane I would have thought that you
would have taken that with a tad more humour (which was how it was
intended). Where in the name of Jebediah did you pick up any arrogance
in me telling you that Chelios and Svoboda were not Canadian. I
do admit that I probably did miss your double entendre
i.e. Canadian/Canadien but believe me there was no arrogance intended,
    I think I even included a smiley. I'll check.

    Ted,

I think Cath's comment concerning arrogance was in reference to
Chelios and Svoboda. I think she meant they were arrogant and that
Canadians did not have such a capacity for arraogance as Chris & Co.
    did.

No, no, no Ted! I didn't me *you* were arrogant. Chelios and Svoboda
are the arrogant ones. Sorry if I mislead you. No harm done, right?
    Can you ever forgive me????

Not that this has anything to do with this note, but are there alot of
Finucane(s) in Dublin? My family is from Cork and Claire, I believe.
And how do they pronounce it over there? There is a family feud with
my father and his aunts and uncles, whose parents came here from
Ireland in the 1890's, about the correct pronunciation. Send me mail
so that this note can get back to the discussion at hand...

Speaking of this note. Mr. Richardson, I'll have you know that I am a
diehard Bruins fan, from the time I was 3 years old. And being said
type of fan, I do not take lightly any remark that might be seen as
negative when it comes to *my* team. So when you're busting my chops
about being a B's fan, just remember that even though they got blown
out of the water by Edmonton, they still made it to the finals, which
is better than all but one other team in the NHL. And, they had the
best record overall and they have the best defenseman in the league (I
don't care if Mark Messier has the hardware. What do those sports
writers know anyway?!?) I feel better now. Thank you for letting me
vent. (and edmonton's colors are yucky, so there!! :^P)

    <<Irish ???????????????????
    <<I thought he was Hungarian...

Yes, Tamas, he is Hungarian. His father was Irish, Korff was born in
Hungary and emigrated to Canada where he made his fortune. Unfortunately,
Canada Immigration, as they usually do, lopped off the O' from O'Barbunk.

His name when he entered Canada was changed to Luke Warmwater but this
proved unacceptable to the vibrant and sexually vigorous Korff, so he made
amourous advances towards the customs' officer's car and won his name back, less
the O'. It's a shame that this affection he held towards cars would be his
undoing, in the end.

Ah obviously you have never visited Quebec. Every Saturday
Mon Pere used to go to La Roulotte, a famous local potatotarium
of great regard, to gather a large bag of the famous Patate Frite
	or fry of the French.

On the way home, a case of the beer of the Gods was purchased
(Laurentide for you infidels). Both of these quantities were
then consumed with great relish (and mustard) until sleep
come upon all....another beer and potato gorging come to
	a pleasent end.

As pUd has illuminated, there are other areas of the world where the
locals exist almost solely on spuds n' suds:

Stopping by the chip wagon on Hwy 17 in the 'prior (Arnprior,
for the uninitiated), then heading over to the Madawaska for a brew.
Or, poutine in Douglas across from the Douglas Hotel, or chips and
gravy in Rooney's Hotel in Eganville, or getting chips with salt and
vinegar half-way down in the 'frew (Renfrew) then heading out to the
'Shady Lady' in Butson's Hotel.

To get back on topic, I'd like to advance some facts regarding the
    Loonie.

One side of the coin has the portrait of a Queen, the other is that
of Brian Mulloonie, but we're not sure which is the head.

The Loonie has 11 sides. Each side represents each of the 2 territories
    and the 9 provinces.

The island represented on the coin is Stag Island off the coast
    of Sarnia.

If you hold a Loonie to a mirror it reads ADANAC RALLOD. This is
    Latin for eighty seven cents.
