289.0. ""Help - Toronto here I come again"" by PEKING::BAKERT (Try me and see) Tue May 01 1990 15:47

Can anyone tell me of any other places to go and see besides the
C.N Tower, Niagra and canadas Wonderland ? As I will hopefully
be returning to Toronto in a few weeks time.

Also can anybody tell me how much hiring a car would cost out there..?

Old Fort York, the Skydome, Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science
Centre, Ontario Place, the Don Valley Parking Lot, Kensington Market,
    Chinatown, ...

As soon as you arrive I'd suggest you pick up some Toronto visitor
information ... available at the airport and/or hotels.

As for cars it's about $35 to $50 (I think) per day, depending on what
     you're looking for.

    Cheers,

Do visit the Grand Canal link to the Don River aqueduct, it's a must
    see.

For more info, see the Grand Canal Conspiracy note.

I find the Ontario Tourist Board's location in the Eaton Centre to be a
better bet for literature. The information you get at the airport and/or
hotels tends to concentrate more on the popular tourist locations (i.e.
Toronto, Niagara Falls, etc.) The Tourist Board puts out information about
the whole of Ontario, from the Soo to Ottawa.

It depends what size car you're looking for, of course. The last car I
rented was a Ford Tempo (slightly larger than an Escort) and that was
$32.95 per day (plus 8% PST). However, weekly/monthly rates should be more
economical, and you also get the benefit of unlimited mileage. And, if you
pay by AMEX, you get insurance cover at no extra charge.

Yes, the SkyDome is finished, but if you're thinking of going to see a
baseball game you might be unlucky. They've already sold over 3,000,000
tickets for this season's games! However, I did get good seats for a game
a couple of weeks ago at very short notice, so you might just strike lucky.

Some other ideas you might find useful:

If you enjoy getting away from the city a bit, there are numerous
provincial parks and conservation areas within an hour's drive of Toronto.
Some of my favorites are: Clairville, Albion Hills, Hilton Falls,
Rattlesnake Point and Palgrave. Information on these is available at the
Eaton Centre Tourist office.

The Metro Zoo (not to be confused with 4110 Yonge Street -- aka TRO!!) is
also recommended, especially if you have kids.

Also, if you like just sitting around not doing much, try the 401 any
weekday between 06:30 and 09:30, 15:30 and 19:00!!

And, finally, though this may come as a bit of a shock, I'm afraid the
Grand Canal (see this conference, notes 1.* - 999.*) has not yet made it to
Toronto; we're busy trying to find a place to put it!! Rumor has it that
they're trying to bury it under the Gardiner Expressway (or is that vice
versa?).

Good luck in TO .... Peter B.
289.6More on car rentalsTROU03::BRAYSearcher of wisdom -- finder of noneFri May 04 1990 20:3719
Tracie:

My own car was in for a service yesterday and today, so I rented a car from
Savings Car Rental. Theirs may not be the lowest rates, but will give you
some idea of what you can expect to pay. For a Ford Tempo, the rates are:

Daily: $29.95 with 200(?) free kms	)
						)	Plus
Weekly: $179.00 with unlimited mileage	) 8%
						)	PST.
Monthly:	$689.00 with unlimited mileage	)

Gas prices are around the 55 to 60 cents per liter mark (approx. 27 to 30
pence).

This gets you a 3-speed automatic with air-conditioning (essential in July
and August!).

Hope this helps .... Peter B.

If you are into a day on the beach you may want to travel to Wasaga
Beach which is about an hour and 45 minutes North West of Toronto.

There are also several summer resorts, hotels and camping grounds in
the area if you'd like to stay overnight but I would try to make a
reservation ahead of time if you're thinking of doing this.

It is about nine miles of white powdery beach and is knick-named the
    California Beach of the North.

Lots to do to. A pretty hip place to be.

Again, you shouldn't have problems with directions from the Tourist
Info. Centre. It's off highway 400 (from the 401) through the town of
Barry and past a few local towns.

You might also want to check out the CAA for directions if you like.

    Have fun in the sun!
