287.0. "Traitor OUI ou NON?" by MQOFS::DESROSIERS (Lets procrastinate....tomorrow) Thu Apr 26 1990 13:12

OK, I admit it I am a traitor (NOT in the criminal sense mind you), I
am also a bigot and a racist.

All this for a OUI on a ballot in 1980.

Just in case anyone is confused, Jean is royally PO'd about the
comments of one of the Liberal Leadership candidates. John Nunziata
stated that Quebec separtists are traitors and racists. Last week
he conceeded defeat with two months to go in the campaign. Yet another
genius from the Liberal Rat Pack.

Liberal Leader. Is this an oxymoron?

At the risk of getting into a p***ing match with Jean et al.....
I don't believe you are a traitor or a racist or a biggot. The words
used are much too strong and undoubtedly have little basis in fact.
But.... to want to separate from the rest of Canada is a nothing less
than a slap in the face of other Canadians. Those of us that love Canada
find it hard to believe that you would want to seperate for any reason.

I have never heard a good reason for Quebec or for that matter for
    Alberta to seperate.

The Western Seperatists are no better, and much less of a political
    force.

All seperatists should be taken out side and maimed!

I agree Nunziata is an idiot!

    Regards,
    Ron

P.S. This is not in any way meant to get you pissed off. I just don't
like seperatism and would love to hear a good rational for it.
I don't think there is one!

Agree with R_RYAN. As much as I agree Nunziata's a bit of goofball,
his comments are being grossly taken out of context. His use of
the word traitor is equating it with separtism. The question we
should be asking is fundamentally is a separtist a traitor? Many
    would say "OUI"

I don't think separatism would be an issue IF the provision for a
distinct society in the meech lake accord was respected by the rest of
Canada. Now it seems that all other provinces want to take this
opportunity to blackmail the central governement and members of
distinct societies into giving them whatever THEY want, be it fishing
rights for New Brunswick or electric coridors for Newfoundland.

And when I go out of MY province and hear some of the comments, I
really don't feel like I am welcomed as part of Canada!

I am afraid that there is little hope of Canada staying together.

I viewed Meech Lake as Canada's last chance of survival as a nation.
I fear that the large gap between the two visions of Canada cannot be
    bridged.

I believe this is the end of Canada as we know it. WE are ALL too
stubborn to make it work. Canada won't be the first country in history
to die. Chalk it up to change.

    re:-.1 etal
Canada will not die as a result of Meech Lakes pass or failure and
any Province that puts its flag before the Canadian flag should be
taken outside and maimed ( or maybe south of the border and maimed
which would lessen the environmental impact within Canada ).
I like Alberta, and B.C. and Ontario ( where I have lived ) and the
only time I like my Province better than any of the others is during
the hockey season ( Go Oilers, Boo Habs ) but even then I like Team
    Canada best of all!!!!!

> OK, I admit it I am a traitor (NOT in the criminal sense mind you), I
> am also a bigot and a racist.

It's bad enough being called a traitor, but the problem with Nunziata's
remarks were the parallels he drew. I have seen and heard his remarks
several times and I don't believe he described the Qubecois as bigots
and racists. Whether he meant that or not I don't know but it is not
    what he said.

I am not convinced that the politicians of Quebec with their hard-nosed
approach are speaking for the people of the province. Certainly having
taken that line, Quebecois are falling in behind their political
leaders ... why not ? The people of Quebec may well feel that they
have had a raw deal out of Confederation, and so have a lot of other
provinces and peoples. I don't believe the people of Quebec are
traitors, but I do have to wonder about the politicians both Federal
    and all the provinces.

What Mulroney tried to do was to resolve the anomoly of Quebec not being a
part of the Canadian Constitution in one fell swoop in basically a few
hours at Meech Lake to seek some glory as the Prime MInister who pulled
the country together. This was like wandering into a car lot just out
of curiosity, not intending to buy a car, and after the salesman
pounces on you, you suddenly find that you are driving out with a car
you don't necessarily want. In spite of the escape clauses to back out
of the deal, you now find you cannot because the salesman intends to
make life miserable for you if you do .....

What turned into the Meech Lake Accord should have had MUCH more
careful consideration before it became an agreed accord ... Now no
one is willing to back down because they are afraid of losing face.

The time has come for our leaders to stop worrying about their face,
their prestige and so on ... Admit that Meech Lake was a rush job in
need of improvement and get on and find a process to improve it.
Then we'll implement it. Never mind setting dead-lines ... I'm sure
the country can survive a few more years without Quebec formally in
the constitution until the job has been done right. After all the
country has survived in a very hodge-podge state for over a hundred
years already. Better for Quebec ... better for Canada.

287.15Native RightsTRCO01::SANDHUWed May 02 1990 15:1710
    Very well put Stuart.

Some of these sentiments were voiced by Prof. Schwartz when the
Meech Lake hearings went to Manitoba. He was the one that got
questioned about this credentials by the Tory member.

Aside from the Quebec issue, Meech Lake does not address the Native
Aborignial rights and completely ignores women. I feel any deal
that ignores the Native people of this country is not worthy of
    implementation.
287.16Whats Newfoundland doing?CGOFS::R_RYANI used to be a coyote but Im ok nowoooWed May 02 1990 15:4119
    I agree. Nicely put Stuart.
I would add that Meech Lake sucks swamp water. It does not meet the
needs of Canada in any way. It attempts to deal with Quebec issues and
fails utterly while ignoring the *more important* issues of Native
rights, women issues (as -.1 states) and what we do with the malcontents
that put their Provinces rights before that of Canada.
It is a politically motivated document that does nothing good for this
    Country.
Bullroony should be put through a vote of no confidence, have his
peepee wacked, and then be taken outside and maimed.
IMHO We do not need Meech Lake!!!!!

I believe Bob's two-cent's worth about Newfoundland's quarter may be
construed as passing the buck; in spite of Baloney's nickle and dime
story. Franc-ly, the Prime Mover has been off the Mark with the
Creep Lake Discord but then he has always had a Yen for sticking it
to the electorate. If we had the good Pence, we would exact a Pound
of flesh from his Shakel-ed hide.

Yours in impecunity,

Pat
