240.0. "Ottawa Info Needed" by JUMBLY::OCONNOR (Ca pique!) Wed Nov 15 1989 09:02

    Hi,
I'm new to this file. I did a quick search for notes/info on Ottawa
and found nothing. Quite soon I will visit an ex-DECcie friend there
and I'm curious as to what I should see while there.

Will temperatures be `minus' etc ? Also, what is the most economical
(but comfortable) way of getting there from Boston ?

Are there any markets worth visiting ? Any interesting clubs,
       coffee-houses (I like C-H's) ? etc

I'm leaving for the U.S. in a few days and hope to spend 4 or 5 days
in and around Ottawa on the week ending 8 December.

       Thanks in advance.

       - Tim

Thanks for the info Cal. My friend will know some interesting places
but as our interests (music and film wise at least) differ, I think I
may not get to see all that's on offer.

    Again, I appreciate any information.

240.3Another questionJUMBLY::OCONNORCa pique!Thu Nov 16 1989 13:0011
I'm not sure if this question has been asked here somewhere already.

The Digital Immigration dept in Mass have told me that I cannot return
to the U.S. if I visit Canada for (even) a few days. It seems to be a
    U.S. ruling.

Does anybody know if this is true ??

It looks like the visit to Ottawa is _off_.

    Tim,

The Immigration Department is probably correct (since they deal
with this sort of thing for a living). It certainly didn't used
to be a problem. I have had many relatives visit us in Ottawa for
a few days in the middle of a USA vacation.

I think that the problem is that the US have lifted Visa restrictions
on UK residents. This means that you may enter the USA without
a visa ***providing you enter DIRECTLY from the UK***.

There are no visa requirements for UK residents visiting Canada.

The only way around this would be for you to get a visa from a US
consulate in the UK or Ottawa. If you already have a multiple-entry
visa to enter the US, then you will have no problem entering the
    US from Canada.

If in doubt, phone the US Consulate in London and check with them.

I hope you can make it to Ottawa - you'll find it WELL worth while.

Thanks Gerry. I would love to see Ottawa and maybe Montreal. What I may
eventually do is visit Canada on the last week of my holiday and return
to Ireland via Kennedy Airport in NY. I think this _is_ allowed as I
would merely be there for a connecting flight back to Shannon.

BTW I'm leaving for Boston from Shannon, Ireland, but it should be okay
as everything is checked at the airport _before_ departure.

Plus Digital Immigration dept tells me that UK citizens are allowed to
cross the borders but not Irish (even though we all have EC passports).

That's probably thoroughly confused everyone. (-;)

The Mounties always get their man.

I'm not sure that is going to work. On flights from Canada to the U.S.
you go through U.S. immigration at the Canadian airport. You arrive at
a normal U.S. domestic arrival area with no U.S. immigration, so they
have no control over whether you board an overseas flight or just
    leave the airport.

Tony, things could not be much worse as it is. Amex have been telling
me for the past three weeks that I do _not_ need a visa to enter
America. While this is true for Great Brits it is _not_ true for Irish
people. So now I've got to get a visa in about one day flat.

If I were American I'd probably sue them. (oblig smilie -;)

Thanks for your note of caution.

PS I may see you in the Spit Brook office on the week beginning 27th
