184.0. "How's Calgary doing?" by MISING::MLAMM () Wed May 31 1989 13:59

Hello Canada!

I'm interested in obtaining information about Calgary. What's the job market
like? How's the economy doing? etc. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks much,
Melaine

    Hi,

Why on earth do you want to go to Calgary??? Do you want a job
still with DEC or another company? Remember Calgary is a boom or
bust town depending on natural resources for their economy. Right
now it is fair and on the way up. Calgary also has a lot of regional
offices of the large national/international companies.

I presume you are not in Canada - if not - at the moment it is not
that easy to get in and work, unless you are Canadian/married to
one/refugee under threat of death etc or have some skill no one
    else has.

Interesting reply from a calgarian (assuming, from your node-name):

> Why on earth do you want to go to Calgary???

I'm from Redcliff, and think the west is beautiful. My favorite western drive
is the 180 milesbetween the Hat and Calgary. No trees, lotsa grass and plenty
of antelope. I see nothing wrong with a non-canajun wanting to move to Calgary.

                              ... but ...

BTW, have you ever been there? If that's |no| than maybe I can agree in part
with the previous reply. Don't get into this unless you have a first hand
vision/feeling/experience of what Calgary is like.

RE .1

Boy, Linda, which side of the rocks did you fall from? The lady just
asked about Calgary in general.

RE .0

If you're a Digit from GIA, you
might look at job postings after July 1. Some areas of GIA are
not posting until after the release of JEQ(?).

What would you expect from someone from Edmonton!

Seriously, I was dragooned from Vancouver to Edmonton (pre-DEC -
1 year 3 month 27 days etc. ago). So I am very jaundiced anywhere
    east of the coast.

Seriously, Calgary is really not that bad, especially as I am not
a hockey fan. I would almost rather live there than here, but then
I would probably have less to complain about.

Well, I was really looking for info on the job market and economy
in peticular for a friend. Buuuut I have always had an interest in that area
and have begun to look into it myself. I love to fish, ski, hike etc.
I've started reading about Calgary and have a ticket to visit. So I'm
slowly working at it.

Cal, thanks for the info on the job posting.

Anyother thoughts or contacts would be appreciated too.

Thanks,
Melaine
