I got a call from my sister last night who has move to Toronto, Canada
recently. She was looking to buy a 88 Honda Accord LXi and has talked to a
couple of Honda dealers. But later on she was approached by one of her
friend's friend. This person called himself a "Car Broker" and said he can beat
the dealer price by as much as $1,200. He claimed this is possible because
they buy a lot of cars from other Honda dealers that are located far away.
Futhermore, it is the Toyota dealership where this person works for that handle
the transation. My sister was also told that this kind of "car broker" is
quite common nowadays in Toronto.
Does this sound "fishy" to any of you who lives in Toronto? Does anyone has
any experience with a car broker before? Is this really a common thing in
Toronto nowadays? Will she be refused for service if she bring in the car to a
Honda dealer for service because she has bought the car from a broker instead?
The reason I asked the last question is because my sister know of at least one
instance that it happened. Any comment is greatly appreciated.

I never heard of a car-broker before and I've owned lots of cars.
Just offhand, I'd say a car-broker might well be a hot (stolen)
car dealer.
Seriously, in Canada you can buy automobiles from many different
places;
1. New car dealer.
2. Used car dealer.
3. Private sale.
4. Car rental agencies, usually last years models.
5. Leaseing firm, cars just off of lease.
When car dealers take your old automobile on a tradein, they will
either clean it up and resale it a profit themselves, or they turn
it over to the dealers used automobile auction in the Toronto area.
To be allowed attendance at this auction and to be able to bid on
the used cars, you must be a licensed dealer in the Province of
Ontario. Most good used car dealers get their automobiles from here
as well as other sources.
Like I said, car-broker sounds like a scam. If the guy works for
a Toyota dealership (that's who pays him), how come he/she is offering
to obtain and sale a Honda and absorb the shipping handling costs
(approx. $800.00 savings), to pass on a savings to a stranger.
I'll bet a good survey of the various car dealers in Toronto and
outlying towns, could net a savings of $900.00 on a new Honda.

They have "car brokers" in BC. They buy the cars straight off the
boats - ie those not consigned directly. A friend of mine bought
her HONDA Civic (the fancy one), 2 years ago. It was legit and
she had standard warranties etc. So it could be the same thing.
