165.0. "Detroit to Toronto and back" by WR1FOR::YIP_MI (Lt Cmdr, Chief Test Pilot) Fri Apr 07 1989 17:50

    There is a good chance that I am driving up to Toronto from Detroit
    on May 5 (Friday) evening, and returning to Detroit May 7 (Sunday)
    evening.

    I have never driven from Detroit to Toronto before. Can someone
    out there share with me the driving experience on this route? I
    suppose it's a 3-1/2 hrs drive once I cross the border.  What's
    the speed limit in Ontario, anyway? Is there rush hour traffic
    in Windsor (I will be crossing the border at around 5pm)? How
    about going through immigration and customs on both sides of the
    border?

    Thanks in advance,
    Michael Yip
    Santa Clara, California.

    You will be arriving through Detroit and Windsor at the worst time
    and competing with a zillion loaded trucks for the attention of
    Canada Customs and Immigration.
    An alternate route wich takes you from Detroit Metro Airport to Toronto
    without ever leaving the highway is:
    from the airport exit:
    I94 toward Detroit and until the end of I94 in Port-Huron, Mi (90mn)
    Just before the end of I94, take exit "bridge to Canada"
    Pass toll (75c) and Immigration (passport) and you are on HWY402
    Drive on HWY402 until the ends (60mn), it ends into HWY401
    Drive on HWY401 from 90 to 120 mn (depending traffic and where in
    Toronto ?).
    If you tell me what your final destination is, I'll give you more
    details.
    Speed limits:
    I94		65mph
    HWY402/401	100Km/h
    If you stick to 110 Km/h, you won't be bothered by the speed traps.
    Radar detector are not allowed in Ontario.
    If you are arriving through Detroit City Airport it is even shorter:
    From airport go east along Conner Av. and into I94 east. Then see
    above. It is from 30 to 45 mn closer to Port-Huron
165.2It is shorter too...KAOFS::N_BAXTERwe'll see who rusts first...Mon Apr 10 1989 16:283
    For once I can agree with Louie. The 402 drive is better than the
    401.  Louie...you didn't "sell" Sarnia???

165.3The shorter road is through SARNIATROA02::DZIALOWSKIMon Apr 10 1989 21:2111
    OK! OK! The other side of the bridge, accross Port-Huron is in ....
    ...
    	....
    		.....SARNIA !!!!!! (see topic 53 in the same note file)

    ...and Sarnia is:	-the beginning of HWY 402 when you go east
    			-the end of HWY 402 when you go west
    			-the Ontario/Michigan Gateway
    			-the Lake Huron/St.Clair River Connection

    So when you pass the bridge, kneel and kiss the ground!
165.4Forgot about the weatherWR1FOR::YIP_MILt Cmdr, Chief Test PilotThu Apr 13 1989 16:599
    I forgot to ask in .0 about the weather during that time
    (early May) of the year around Toronto area. Years of
    travel has taught me not to believe what the tour books
    say but "rely" on local information more.

    Thanks again.
    Michael.

    Well.... it snowed yesterday, but who cares????

    Actually the weather is usually great in mid-late May. We have had
    some unusual heat waves at that time of year. You might want a light
    jacket/sweater for evening.
