| Renting a canoe in CB is not a problem, any fresh water (or semi-salt
like the Bras D'or lakes ) water body has rental places available.
My favorite places are around Lake Ainslie. (also fishing in the
little brooks off the lake) My grandfather used to own property
there. Also, a trip by canoe around the Bras D'or lakes is nice,
and you can visit places like the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in
Baddeck. The first plane in Canada flew from the ice-covered Bras
D'or lakes near Baddeck (the Silver Dart) with Mr. Bell's help.
A.G.B. also developed the hydrofoil and tested it a lot in the waters
around Baddeck.
A two or three day canoing trip in CB can probably be done on the
Myra river (remember the song "Out on the Myra" ? this the self
same river...), although I haven't done it.
The Cape Breton Highlands National Park has some canoing areas,
but to have a weekend full of it requires extensive portaging, and
less canoing. In that case, you are better off in Kejimkujik National
Park, about 6 hours drive from the Canso Causeway. (2 hours southwest
of Halifax, close to Yarmouth).
An interesting canoe trip is one I made while in high school (
Dartmouth High in Dartmouth, near Halifax). Navigate up the
Shubenacedie Canal water system from Dartmouth to the Bay of Fundy.
We spent a week one crazy summer at it, dilly-dallied a lot &
really enjoyed ourselves.
