89.0. "Kitchener-Waterloo (formerly Berlin), Ont." by POTARU::COUPAL (Professional wrestling in Olympics) Wed Jul 27 1988 06:23

Lived there for a few years and always enjoyed the place.
Can someone living around there bring me fresh news about the
joint ? My latest news are from 1984.

Do people still windsurf on Laurel Creek ? What happened to
that dismissed police chief ? Did U of W finally expand ?
Is Lulu's still the largest pickup joint in the world ? What
are the best hangout spots these days ? What's happening on
the campus ? Did that new technology area on Columbia finally
develop ? Did that Toyota plant in Cambridge get built ?
What's the economy like over there ? Can you still skate free
        at Rink-in-the-Park ?

Hope to go back some day ...

Answers to some of your questions from a DECer whose family lives
    in Cambridge.

    > Is Lulu's still the largest pickup joint in the world ?

    Yes.

    > Did that Toyota plant in Cambridge get built ?

Not yet. It is in the construction process. (lots of framework,
    construction vehicles, construction jobs, etc.)

    > What's the economy like over there ?

Pretty good. The Golden mile in Cambridge (Hwy 24 South) is so
crowded now (we have all the fast food places). Houses have doubled
in price (i.e. a new detached home (3 bdrms) is going for 200 grand
    now).

89.2I remember.....TRCA03::THOMSONDavid W. ThomsonFri Aug 12 1988 19:1017
I was born and raised in K-W, went to UoW and moved away to live
the in "Big Smoke" (Toronto). The thing I remember most was
Oktoberfest. I haven't been for a number of years now and I hope
to attend this year. Got to be careful, though, my beer drinking
skills aren't what they used to be.

In reference to fired police chief in .0, I had all but forgot about
him. Didn't that have something to do with abuse of power and motor
cycle gangs. It was an interesting case. Motor cycle gangs were
a big problem in that area. I recall that at the time, the police
chief had the emotional support of most of the city (didn't seem
to do him any good though). The last I heard he was working for
a police department in the Toronto area.

I know it usually ends on Thanksgiving which is Oct 9, therefore it
probably starts on 28 Sept. I am going on Oct 8th.

	Have fun.
