79.0. "What does the RCMP smoke?" by AYOU46::D_HUNTER (SABRINA - Song? What song?) Thu Jun 30 1988 08:46

I read in the Vogon News Service today that Canada had just passed
some tough Anti-Smoking laws. Can anyone expand on what these
laws entail as I like to visit Canada about once every three years
and at present puff on twenty a day?

From what I remember seeing in the Local Rag is that the Tobacco
companies are being controlled as to the type of advertising they
can do. The other control is that all federally regulated buildings
and airlines are to be smoke free. (gov't buildings and Air Canada)

Don't postpone any visiting plans because of these new laws.
I'm sure your relatives would still like to see you ((????))
79.2METRO TORONTO BYLAWSTRCA03::CURZONRichard Curzon TRS 5/2Mon Jul 04 1988 15:2912
Also in Metro Toronto, there is now a bylaw against smoking in the
workplace similar to DEC's policy. Employees of companies located in
Metro can complain to the city, companies can be fined for not providing
a smoke free environment etc. The inspectors won't catch much
themselves though, there are only 2 inspectors.

Another nice recent bylaw in Metro TO is the one making causing
"gridlock" illegal. If you drive into an intersection without being
sure you can get out of the far side before the lights change, you are
taking a chance -- could be a ticket if you get caught. Should help
control the idiots who jam up intersections at rush hour.

That's a coincidence. The Road Traffic guys have just 'installed'
yellow grids (same idea as your gridlocks) here in Ayr. Apparently
Ayr High Street is the third busiest street in Scotland in terms
of pedestrians behind Sauchihall street in Glasgow and Union Street
    in Aberdeen.

BTW, do any of you DECanadians live in or around Etobicoke/Kipling?
Or do you have any dealings with Ernst & Whinney either in Toronto
    or Mississauga ?

79.4Red light cameras even worsePOTARU::COUPALProfessional wrestling in OlympicsWed Jul 06 1988 12:2417
Mhhh, is that gridlock thing for people who say jammed (I agree
they're idiots) on the red, or is it only for drivers taking
their chance forcing the yellow light ?

Melbourne, Australia, has overhead red light cameras at key
intersections. Get stuck in the middle on a red light, and the
mechanism is set off automatically. You get a free picture in
the mail with the hefty fine. Also triggered if you 'burn'
the red light by too much.

Unfortunately, there is a consequence which may also happen
in Toronto: people get weary, stop at the last minute rather
than take the chance, and the dude behind run into them.
Apparently authorities would rather have good citizens, regardless
of accidents caused. (Of course they're in a conflict of interest,
making money out of the fines ...)

BIG BROTHER is watching you in Australia! There is no such
automated photo enforcement in Toronto. IF a cop catches you causing
gridlock at an intersection, you get the ticket... so at least the long
arm of the law actually sees the chain of events. The jerks you want to
get are the ones who are willing to risk holding up other people, if it
might save themselves a few seconds.

They are asking for smash-ups with that kind of "certain
punishment" approach in Oz -- still photos are rarely fair evidence for
anything (private detectives take note...)
79.6Sounds SICK BIRD to me.KAOM25::TOMKINSThis MIND left blank INTENTIONALLYThu Sep 01 1988 20:0412
In actual fact, during the Trudeau era, Agriculture Canada in cahoots
with Health and Welfare Canada were cultivating pot here in Ottawa
on the experimental farm. The results of their studies were contained
within the report issued by the LeDain Commission.

As told to me by a friend of a friend, the end product was the best
ever sampled with the highest yeild.

I suspect that the RCMP were the guinea pigs who had to smoke it.
