71.0. "The Maritime note" by CUPOLA::HAKKARAINEN (Your VAX is on the roof) Mon May 16 1988 17:02

This note is for discussions about the Maritime provinces (and you
    know who you are).

My in-laws live much of the year in Cardigan, on the east end of P.E.I.
A beautiful, quiet, awfully poor village. The towns on that end of the
island were just starting to turn things around with mussel farming
when, as many of you know, a mysterious poison caused a number of
illnesses and a few deaths last winter.

It's a lovely region. But, most Maritimers I know are from the
    Maritimes, not in them.

71.1A trip across the maritimesXCUSME::KINGGive me a ChallengeTue May 17 1988 07:4526
Living in the Northeast United States, I have always been curious
about the Maritimes. Partly because there are quite a few people
who have moved from "there" to "here". Where ever "here" is, right?
Kidding. I'm referring to the Boston area as the "here" in this
    case.
I believe we stole one of your news anchors a few years back and he
can be seen on channel 7 Boston. He's a really amiable nice guy too.

But even more I've always been intrigued by the maritimes and hope
to visit someday. My ancestors on my dad's side came from Nova
    Scotia, parts unknown.

A few years ago, my dad decided to take a ride around the maritimes
one summer. So he loaded my mom, sister and youngest brother into his 1981
Trans Am and drove to Portland to catch the ferry to Halifax. When
they arrived, they drove around Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and
on down the Maine coast towards Boston. You have to understand
this guy likes to drive and drive they did scarcely stopping for
other than night lodging, gas and a bite to eat. Well they picked
up some souveniers at a few shops as well. But after that I don't
my mom ever got into the Trans Am. It's not a very comfortable
    car for touring in.

These days my dad drives a Pariessenne.

Just how merry WERE the maritimes? And when WERE they, anyway?

I've been called a "Canuck"/Frog/Puddle jumper but never a "maritimer"!

Most of Nova Scotia is lacking in outward signs of wealth. The
occassional indicators of wealth(large house, sportscar) are usually
the retired business man, ship's captain or successfull fleet scallop
    fisherman.

Whats odd though is the guys I grew with who stayed in Novi are
just as content as the rest of us working on this side of the border.
They just don't have as many toys...

71.4Fishing License?TOPDOC::AHERNDennis the MenaceMon Jun 06 1988 19:257
Does anyone know what the fishing license requirements for non-
residents is in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia? I've heard that in NFLD.
you need to hire a guide to legally fish for salmon, but not for trout.

How much is the license? For how long?

Newscaster's name is Dave Wright, former "Live at Five" anchor for
    ATV in Halifax.

When he went to Iran/Iraq after moving to Boston, big news in Halifax.

When he had some heart problems after that, big news in Halifax.

    Hope he's doing well...

Well, Dave Wright is back anchoring the 6 o'clock news at ATV as of September
1st. There has been a big shakeup at ATV as half of the "on air" staff has
quit and gone to MITV, a new Global affiliate opening up in Dartmouth on
September 1.( owned by K.C. Irving of course).

Where are all the Maritimer's gone? Last note was years ago!

I'm another former Martimer (now in Nashua, N.H.) who gets very
home sick -- even after 27 years away from Canada. Apparently
I missed a big reunion of Sydney Academy this summer--for everyone who
ever went to the school and talked to some friends after who said it
was great. Anyone out there from Sydney? Been there lately? Any kind
    of information would be appreciated.

Oh we're still quietly lurking in the corners! What was that saying?

Save us from Hell, Hull, and Halifax!

    Save us from Hull????

Are you referring to our beloved Hull PQ, home of discos, federal
office towers, a shamefully inept museum of civilization, and friendly
    policemen who love animals???

As any Ottawan can tell you...

    		GO TO HULL! ;-)

I believe it had something to do with Hull and Halifax being "dry" towns. When
I was growing up in Halifax, they rolled the streets up at 6pm. Things are a
bit different now a days.

71.11GOOD OLD DAYS????MRKTNG::MOGETue Oct 29 1991 18:505

What, no bootlegger's in Halifax. -- Seems to me anyone could find
one in Sydney when they wanted one (not me of course) also was
a great place for teenager to grow up, lot of things to do.

71.12My grandmother for instance!11SRUS::HEWITTStandard du jourWed Oct 30 1991 10:3213
Actually, my grandmother was a bootlegger. The Mounties liked her and would
warn her when a crackdown was coming. She even had her niece appear in court to
pay her fines when the police decided she was not being netted on the regularly
scheduled raids. The police would fine her occasionally to demonstrate that
they were doing their jobs. She used to invite the police in for tea and would
have them sit on stacks of beer cases that were covered with blankets. As best
as I can remember, she would only sell beer and her clients had better not show
up too drunk or she would literaly give them the bum's rush. A truely comic
scene was a tipsy drunk picking himself up out of a mud puddle and sheepishly
looking around to see if anyone was watching as he scurried off.
