56.0. "Digital: a smoke-free workplace?" by KAOA02::SEED () Wed Mar 16 1988 14:15

Finally, the powers that be have announced a smoke-free workplace
for all Digital Equipment of Canada offices. Sadly, this does not
become effective immediately, but "when smokerooms are constructed",
    whenever that may be.

Our parent corporation has had smoke-free offices for a long time
now. Why do we have to wait for a fair shake? I don't know. This
topic is to let off steam, exchange views, etc...

See also Human::No_Smoking (<kp7>...) for a discussion. It's good to
hear that smoking will be prohibited in the GWN. Stateside facitlities
have had to wait a long time for non-smoking work areas and many
continue to wait until the smokerooms are built.

the corp. (the usa at least) has mandated that all dec facilities
will be smoke free on jan 1, 1989. at the latest! there are several
sites in so. nh and no. mass that have already gone 'all the way'.

Kanata phase 4 will have a designated smoke area by june 1. Unfortunately
the designated smoke area is the cafeteria. Thus those craving for
fresh air have to eat at our desks.

Complaints, complaints, all I hear is complaints.

Give us smokers a break, although I agree with the non smoking policy
because it is unfair to have unwilling people breath our smoke,
I also think that like Digital some of the non-smokers should be
    a little bit more understanding.

Some of us have been smoking for a long time and it isn't as easy
to quit as you may think. It may be that the cafeteria being the
smoking area is not an acceptable solution, but remember that it
is a temporary solution and that hopefully soon, we smokers will
be able to smoke our faces off in our own area.

Digital managers seem to taken the stand that they understand how
hard it may be to quit for some people and they are willing to make
concessions. I think everybody should do the same.

Freedom doesn't mean that you can be free from my smoke but I can't
be free to polute my body by whichever mean I choose.

    Hi,

I guess I have calmed down a little bit since the last note I wrote
(-.1). Someone showed me an article today that I think would be
very interesting for both smokers and non-smokers.

The article can be found in the April 18, 1988 publication of TIME
magazine and is entitled "All Fired Up Over Smoking"

    Enjoy,
