41.0. "Dalbello" by 51913::LEHTINEN (What happens now is up to you.) Sat Dec 26 1987 09:50

Is the female rock artist "Dalbello" a Canadian? I suspect this
because the record sleeve of "She" mentions a studio in Toronto.
I'm curious and would like to know for sure, so I'd appreciate
any information on her that you might be able to give.

41.1Dalbello is CanadianKAOA01::GLOBRIENMon Dec 28 1987 12:547
Lisa Dalbello is Canadian, but I am not sure where in Canada she
lives (perhaps Montreal). I am surprised that she is known outside
of Canada. She did work on the sountrack of the movie 9 1/2 weeks,
was a member of Northern Lights, the Canadian equivalent of
Band-Aid. A few years ago, she dropped her first name from her
    albums.

    Yup...

Formally known as Lisa DelBello, she has been part of the Canadian
music scene for a number of years. Lately, I have been hearing her
distinctive vocal style in a number of television and radio commercials.

I am not a big fan, but enjoy hearing her on the radio from time
to time. I'm suprised to hear she has sold albums in Europe.

Thank you very much for the info. Now if I only knew where to
get/order her earlier records... (or videos perhaps?)

    >> I'm suprised to hear she has sold albums in Europe.

I'm not. "She" (the only one available here, BTW) is an absolutely
fantastic record. I'm sure she will be a star here real soon.

    Thanks again,

(From north too, but from the other side :-))

P.S. How come Canada put's out so good music (Dalbello, Jane Siberry,
    Saga, etc.)
41.4Big in Europe - Unknown in CanadaCGFSV2::CADAMSClint Adams, Canadian Cust. SupportThu Dec 31 1987 15:1916
Making a name in Europe first seems to be a common phenomenon for
Canadian musicians. Saga, in particular, has enjoyed widespread
popularity in Europe but has had a hard time gathering a following in
Canada and is virtually unknown in the US.

This would seem to be the case with Lisa DelBello and Jane Sibberry as
well, although they have enjoyed limited success in Canada. I think,
to make it really big in the North American market you have to cater
to the masses of "pop" music junkies created by the big record
companies and radio stations.

Well, at least it's comforting to know our artists are appreciated and
are making a living in spite of their home town fans.

                Regards.... Clint

I think most noters are younger than I (pushing 40) but in "my
generation" there were a good number of Canadians who wound up being
quite influential in pop/folk music. Unlike rock musicians of today,
they had healthy followings in Canada before the world knew about them
-- some of them were:

Neil Young
Joni Mitchell
Gordon Lightfoot
Ian & Sylvia
Buffy St. Marie
Leonard Cohen
Kate and Anna McGarrigle

  and of course
the Guess Who
Bachman Turner Overdrive

who else?

BTW Canadians are also very big in childrens music. I heard from
a friend that Sharon, Lois and Bram sold out in Boston as did Raffi.

Anyone know of a record shop in Canada where I could order Dalbellos
"Lisa Dalbello", "Pretty Girls" and "Drastic Measures" ?

Heart is not from Canada, but the US. There is some confusion
about this (I once thought they were Canadian, myself) because
before they made it big, they were better known and appreciated
in Canada than in the US.

Does anyone know what happened to the Powder Blues, a Vancouver based blues band
that had a GREAT horn section. I saw them about four years ago in Montreal and
haven't heard anything from or about them since.

I think they must be hanging out in LA. I've seen them twice on
a show called "Eveinig at the Improv". Its shown several nights
a week on the ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT channel in the US.

The Wilson sisters (Ann and Nancy) who are basically HEART are from
Canada. So that makes the band 3/4 Canadian.

Also Chris DeBurgh's Band (except for one) are all from Toronto.

Sorry. The Wilson sisters are from the U.S. They moved to Vancouver,
and that's where they first became popular.
